The era of Tyson, Holyfield, Lewis, De La Hoya, Jones Jr, Trinidad are pretty much over. Hopkins and Toney aint getting any younger. If you ask the average sports fan right now, they wouldn't be able to name any champions in boxing right now. Whereas, several years ago, they could have come up with some. I'm sure the average sports fan knew who Tyson, Jones Jr and De La Hoya were. But right now, they don't have an idea who Jeff Lacy, Jermain Taylor, Floyd Mayweather are. So my question, who can be the superstar that can lead boxing to the next decade like Tyson did in the 80's and Roy and Oscar did in the 90's?
for me the only guy out there with the balls to take boxing on to a new level, like tyson and others have in the past decades, is Hatton. He's a boxer in the most competitive division who is willing to take on all comers and leave his homeland to do so, and therefore should be given more credit than he is on this site. The only other fighter around at the moment who is in the same bracket is Lacey though he faces an interesting fight with joe which can only be described as a 50-50 fight, any one who see's different must need their eyes tested as these are two equally matched warriors who will in my opinion create the fight of 2006. Dont label joe as a person who avoids the big fights, he has been ducked by champions more times than he has pulled out of. ( The only pull out being against Glencoffe Johnson with a dodgy back very late which i think he admits himself to being a big mistake), ure views?
Mayweather is the obvious choice with his talent, but lacks the public appeal which will not come until he takes part in a career defining fight. ( hatton, judah?( kostya's 2 round sparing partner!, or possibly cotto all at 140/7)
how about my man pacquiao? he's on the rise now... mayweather needs to fight noteworthy opponents to be really big.. all he does is bitch about money.. mothafucca dont sell PPV pac man sells more than him...
You don't think Mayweather is going to be superstar? That guy is practically all anyone talks about when boxing is mentioned were I'm from. And believe me boxing is not a big thing around here. I think we got like three gyms in my town, and one of them is just a family thing ran by a guy by the name Rev. Bresheers.
I know, but the casual fan wants to see him fight like Gatti...He got more fans after his fight with Torres than when he used his counter punching skills against Abdulaev or Ndou...
Which is sad b/c if he keeps fighting like it is only a matter of time before he get ko'ed.
I think if the Lacy-Calzaghe fight gets any kind of publicity the winner of that one could come out a star. I think regardless Lacy will end up becoming a star because of his Olympic status. I also think PBF will become a star pretty soon. Boxing needs more publicity and more advertising. The MMA thing has really taken off especially with The Ultimate Fighter show. I think the contender helped out boxing a little bit, but none of those guys on the show are actually going to be contenders for championships. I think a good way to do it would to have a Heavyweight Tournament on Network television. I know it will never happen, but if it did it would help.
