Exclusive Interview: Ricardo Mayorga
By G. Leon
"I'm going to give Oscar De La Hoya the worst beating of his life!"
GL: What's good Ricardo? Is it still looking like you're going to fight Oscar De La Hoya on May 6?
Ricardo Mayorga: "I want to make it happen and I think it's going to happen. I want to make this the hottest ticket in town and I want him to face me. Once and for all I want him to see me in the ring face to face so I can show everyone that I can beat him and knock him out."
GL: When do you expect this deal to get done?
Ricardo Mayorga: "Everything has moved along pretty well so far so I hope soon is the answer. I guarantee you this, if it happens in May, he's going to get knocked out. He's going to retire with back to back knockout losses."
GL: De La Hoya is a solid boxer with a lot of experience. Do you feel you'd be able to deal with De La Hoya's boxing ability better than you were able to deal with Cory Spinks?
Ricardo Mayorga: "As long as he's in the ring, I don't care if he boxes or brawls with me...as long as he's in the ring he's not going to be able to get out of there. I would knock him out."
GL: Would a victory over De La Hoya serve as some sort of redemption for your loss to Tito Trinidad?
Ricardo Mayorga: "Not only in Nicaragua, but around the world, the way I'm going to beat De La Hoya by knockout after totally dismantling him, I'm going to replace De La Hoya as the new guy in boxing. Not only that, everybody is going to remember this fight for the next 200 years."
GL: Can you compare De La Hoya to anyone you've been in there with?
Ricaro Mayorga: "He reminds a lot of my wife...my ex-wife actually. A lot of bitching and a lot of moaning, but I'm still going to beat him."
GL: Are you pleased that you're people Tony Gonzalez, Carl King and Don King Productions have you in the mix for a De La Hoya fight?
Ricardo Mayorga: "As always, I'm very happy with the fights I've been getting. Now I just want Oscar to sign the contract so I can knock him out once and for all."
GL: De La Hoya is a soft spoken guy. He's certainly not going to start any trash talking, will that make it more difficult for you to start throwing insults his way?
Ricardo Mayorga: "From the get go I want to make it clear, nothing will stop me from talking down on him. I have a lot of respect for him as a fighter and I respect his family. Everything I'm going to say is going to be directed at him and once I get in his head there's going to be no stopping me. I don't want to say too much now though because I don't want him to get scared, start losing sleep and not sign the contract. Once I see he signs the contracts, you're not going to be able to shut me up."
GL: I'll be speaking with Oscar face to face later today, is there a personal message you'd like me to relay to Oscar for you?
Ricardo Mayorga: "Tell him I have a lot of respect for his family, but I hope he's ready to get knocked out. I want to thank him for the opportunity he's giving me by facing me in the ring and he'd better believe that I'm going to make the most of it and knock him out. Tell him I've got a beat down just waiting for you."
GL: Will Yoel Judah still be in your corner?
Ricardo Mayorga: "Yes."
GL: Is there anything you'd like to say in closing?
Ricardo Mayorga: "I have a message for all boxing fans. Whoever feels that I'm going to win this fight, put some money on your gut feeling because I'm going to win this fight and I'm going to win by knockout. I'm not going to waste this opportunity and I'm going to make everybody happy because I'm going to give Oscar De La Hoya the worst beating of his career!"
Mayorga is doing agreat job trying to hype this fight, but he's about to have his ass handed to him, again. If Trinidad can handle him, DLH will practically play with him.
Is Mayorga the one who would brag about his drinking and smoking when he wasnt in training?
Yeah he's the one that smoked a cigarette while his gloves were still on after a fight. :boxing:
mayorga got lucky 1 time against vernon forest and its gone to his head...he lost the 2nd fight to forest then lost to cory spinks..then outpointed a nobody in eric mitchell, then got raped by felix trinidad then outpointed a bum in his last fight..unless oscar rust shows...this will be a easy UD..he dosent have the boxing skills of vargas so this should be easy for oscar
That guy's all talk, he's never been anything more than a Peter-type slugger, DLH is gonna fuck his ass up and make him look stupid again for talking shit his punk ass can't back up lol
yeah, all of this talk was great a few years ago...but now it is just blah blah blah...he hasn't backed it up much...even vs inferior opponents recently...he has looked mediocre
Let me traslate for you what Mayo means.
What he is really saying, is, he is going to give DLH'S hands a beating because they will be landing flush on his face time after time after time.
i ussually would agree but oscar is not the same fighter he once was. he lost his last fight and should have lost to sturm. also mayorgas defense will be better he has been working with zab judah. i like oscar but he is a lil overated now he hasnt had a decicive win in years. hes great for the sport but now old. he is just a marketable fighter
The way I see it is, if mayorga lost to a one-dimensional fighter like trinidad (nothing against trini, i like the guy)he will have problems with a guy who can fight not only fight on the outside but also on the inside and a guy who IMO can punch as hard if not harder than trinidad, faster hand speed and combos and a good chin. You never know, this is boxing and anything could happen.
I pick De la hoya to win but i still like Mayorga cause he has alot of hearth and a chin of steal and plus he's a funny character!!! talks alot of shit and trys his best to back it up.
GL: Can you compare De La Hoya to anyone you've been in there with?
Ricaro Mayorga: "He reminds a lot of my wife...my ex-wife actually. A lot of bitching and a lot of moaning, but I'm still going to beat him."
f***in hell, no way did he say that
