I tell you one thing about Hatton that I really liked. Look at the KO again. He catches Maussa by throwing an extended feint with his right before laying him out with the left. For someone who isn't regarded as having much of a boxing brain he showed it on Saturday... after three rounds of being dumb. I think the saying, "go to the body and the head will come" is most appropriate here. Maussa's defense is always quite bad, but Hatton had his full attention with body shots early-mid fight and Maussa wasn't willing to raise his hands high in case Ricky went downstairs again. Ricky should be creditted with staying with a fight plan, which I'm sure included that time-tested approach to finding the opponent's chin.

Hatton fought the 1st round brilliantly. I thought Hatton was headhunting too much, He didnt use his patented left hook to the body, and his killer liver shots. A bad performance from Hatton IMO, but He got the job done which is ALL you can ask. He reminds me of the type of fighter even if He is losing on the scorecards He somehow pulls it out.

Fair point Moon, but again Cotto stopped him on cuts... Hatton laid him out. And Scap, GOOD question. To be honest, I haven't seen enough fights with cuts in this country to make an honest judgement call. (Isn't it weird that in a sport like boxing you rarely see cuts as a percentage?) It is an interesting debate. If That fight had been in America and say Hatton was fighting Mayweather, would they be more inclined to stop it? Now, Mayweather is the house fighter basically and Hatton a virtual unknown ( in Vegas terms ). I think the rule is that if the cut is hindering the performance and/or causing the fighter punishment that he would not be recieving if it weren't for the cut then the fight is stopped. We'll only know when hatton fights stateside and gets cut. Kinda makes you think of hatton fighting Gatti with the cut thing and all ( even though i think Gatti would be destoryed by hatton ).

In North America, Cotto got limited credit for destroying Maussa. Prior to that fight, the Columbian was seen only as a durable stepping stone, and Cotto passed the test. So, again in North America, Ricky's conquest of Maussa is seen as an obvious outcome. Ricky will get his due credit for beating a man that he should have beaten. Nothing more. Much like Cotto, nobody should get too excited about Hatton beating this particular opponent.

Let me ask you anopther question...If Floyd Mayweather and Ricky Hatton were fighting in that very same arena in 6 months and Mayweather suffeered a bad cut similiar to Ricky's...does anyone check it out in your opinion? great point wow i didnt even think about that i didnt think the headbutts were that bad tho, thats why this makes me believe hatton gets cut up easily maybe i need to watch the fight again

I don't recall this, no. Apparently it used to be a regular occurence early in his career (only seen his last eight or so) so maybe they know the corner knew what they were doing? Yeah, you're right. But in a way... HEy Anorak, I watched the fight but I had my wife in my ear on a few different occassions...Im curious did officials ever really closley examine Hatton's cuts? I dont recall seeing a Doctor or the ref coming over to take a REAL look at the cut. Did this happen and I just missed it?

It was a tough fight, but thanks to Maussa's "unique" tactics Ricky was cut badly over both eyes and in possible danger of being pulled out. Pulled out? Had the fight been stopped it would have either been a no contest or if it went to the cards it was clearly Ricky's fight. As long as Ricky fights at home he wont have to worry about losing on cuts unless his face is about to come off.

Here are my observations after watching the fight. 1. Hatton was very patient, kept his composure and did not panic despite the cuts on both his eyes(both caused by headbutt). 2. Hatton just kept outworking Maussa, systematically broke him down and did not look for that one-punch KO. He knew it was gonna come eventually(credit to his corners' advice). 3. Hatton was in a major reach disadvantage and he knew he was gonna take some shots to unload his own. Just look at the leaping KO punch, that's how far he had to jump just to reach Maussa's chin LOL. And finally, I think nobody has really noticed this... 4. Maussa has a much much more improved boxing skills. That was almost NOT like the Carlos Maussa that fought Vivian Harris. His punches weren't as wide as before. I thought he had a beautiful and swift jab. His combinations were really quick(especially the body shots). Props to his trainer for a vast improvement. His defense is still shitty though. Give Ricky his due. If you didn't see the fight, then STFU. I still think he wouldn't beat PBF but a fight with Cotto is 50/50. disagree i would expect hatton to beat up cotto thats a 80/20 fight for me

Zoo gave him a much tougher fight dont kid yourself. Despite some of the scores that fight was very very close, Im still pissed at Zoo for deciding to quit! He had brain damage. It was smart for his career, and for his family. He put up a good fight anyways but Hatton was starting to take over.

I dont think it was an off performance, I thought he loooked like the Ricky Hatton that I have come accustom to seeing...relentless and brutal. To be fair scap, I think Hatton had a decent performance. I've definetly seen him on much better days. I think the fact that many here are discrediting Maussa has something to do with it. It was reported that he has over 300 amateur wins...so He must be doing something right. I love the fact how he one-punched a guy who has a granite chin. He took some bombs all night, and Maussa just kept coming back. To be fair though, His punches weren't threatening at all to Hatton I think they were just there to keep Hatton off. Only thing that worries about Hatton with me is his defence. Against a classy guy like Floyd He can't afford to get hit alot because He will get stopped on cuts.

Ricky is an animal and is as relentless as any fighter today. I had no problems with his performance agaisnt Maussa-he deliveered a pretty brutal beating...my 1 negative observation is that Ricky will need to be even more relentless and even dirtier to get the job done against Floyd There was too much distance between him and Carlos, if Ricky is to beat Floyd he is going to have to be able to stick his dick in Mayweather at all times...thats how fucking close he will need to be to win! I think he is a favorite right now over Cotto.
