Why do the lot of you on this forum believe Roy Jones Jr. to be overated?
I hear the bias of some of you claiming Hopkins to be the best MW ever, then why isn't Roy Jones Jr. in a higher regard when instead of milking divisions he took challenges.
I will be the first to say that He was the reason some fights weren't made, but the man won ninety percent of his rounds vs. opposition.
I know there should and will always be skeptics vs. every fighter, but why Roy Jones? Many predicted his downfall when He was put in with Ruiz, but as soon as He won that fight Ruiz was labelled as an awful champion.
What are your thoughts?
Roy is like Tyson. You like him or you hate him. He is also like Tyson in that people say he never faught anybody. But both will be hall of famers...
There is a difference, Tyson fought the BEST available, but Roy Jones fought bums of the streetz!
He didn't take boxing seriously enough. If Eddie Futch trained Eubank for Jones Jr and Futch worked Eubank's corner, Eubank would of beaten him. Heck, if I trained Eubank for Jones Jr and I worked Eubank's corner, Eubank would of beaten him.
you didnt answer my other question.
if he had the tools, why wouldnt he use them?

Eubank (post-Watson) had the tools to beat Jones Jr, I'm not saying that he'd of used them (he probably wouldn't of) but he most certainly had the tools to win a wide UD against Jones Jr.
Pre-Watson Eubank would of definately stopped Jones Jr.
if he had the tools, why wouldnt he use them? this is just stupid. i have another question for you. if eubank wanted to take a shit on your chest would you let him? i am betting you would.
Bert Sugar respects Roy as an all time great, and I'd just love to see someone sit in a chair across from him and try to say Roy is not an all time great
LMFAO!! Bert fucking Sugar?! Hahahaha.
If he said it, it must be true :)

Chris Eubank had the tools to beat him.
of course you would say this. but, then if someone asked if eubank could beat godzilla you would pull eubanks greasy hog out of your mouth and say "my man will make that dragon his bitch just like he did me".

hmm
There are plenty of fighters who fought in a weakish era and are respected as greats: Jack Johnson, Larry Holmes, Lennox Lewis, Marciano, Monzon, Hopkins, etc.
There are plenty of fighters who fought more average fighters than great fighters and are respected as greats. It would be highly unusual for any fighter to have more greats on his resume than any regular guys.
Roy defeated, in his prime, everyone he ever faced in convincing fashion. Many of them were good opponents, and some were greats. Haters try to say Roy is a "fraud" and so forth, and when they finally hit the lottery when Roy lost at 35 yrs old, they tried to say "We knew it all along!"
Bullshit. Roy beat Montell Griffin, Eric Harding, John Ruiz, Bernard Hopkins, Antonio Tarver, Mike McCallum, Virgil Hill, Jorge Castro, and a who's who list of former/would be champs such as Clinton Woods, Reggie Johnson, Eric Lucas, Julio Gonzalez, and Vinny Pazienza.
Bert Sugar respects Roy as an all time great, and I'd just love to see someone sit in a chair across from him and try to say Roy is not an all time great, especially for a whack ass reason like he didn't beat Nigel Benn.
Only haters don't respect Roy as a boxing great, period.
Roy Jones is one of those fighters you will either love or hate. Roy Jones without a doubt had the most talent and physical gifts of any boxers I have ever seen. However, his legacy will probably never be as great as boxers such as Sugar Ray Leonard or Thomas Hearns. Could he have beaten these two fighters? Most likely. But due to the fact that Roy was considered "too great" is what made him "less great." Throughout his career, he made hall of fame fighters and good fighters look like bums, so people started questioning if his competiton was even that good. I put him in the top 15 P4P of all time.
Tyson beat a lot of good people in his day and was always dangerous with either hand. He was the youngest heavyweight champ and theres a reason why... he's good.
You don't have to tell me that man. You know I am part of Team Tyson.lol :D

i dont think he had a bad chin he just never got hit..after years of never getting hit when you finally do your going to get hurt..same as any fighter after a long layoff cant take a punch the same as before..i know ali an foreman did but not most fighters
Well said. No one is denying his talent and natural ability, we're questioning his heart.
The man had almost the most talent ever (behind Sugar Ray Leonard) but the quality of competition just wasn't there. I'd say if he fought either Benn or Eubank and won then he would get a lot more respect. Ever since he met G-Man in the ams he knew his chin was made of china, so he didn't take risks.

That's what I always thought as well. And then after what happened to McClellen against Benn ...
I certainly think he should be considered as one of the greatest. He beat 2 sure fire All Time Greats in Hopkins and Toney, the rest of his opponent were mostly just good but the thing is he dominated them like no other.
But I think criticism was justified as he had this amazing talent and when he was at the top of everyone's p4p list he never tested himself. Plus getting knocked out consecutively with one punch towards the end of his career probably skewed a lot people's perception.
Chris Eubank had the tools to beat him.
How did this become about Eubank??
For a guy who started as a middleweight a top 5 of victories against this lot aint too shabby:
James Toney (forget the weight drain stuff, roy jones was drained also and James toney in interview has admitted he got beat fair and square - watch that espn program where they go behind the scenes of sportstars)
Bernard Hopkins
Virgil Hill
John Ruiz
Mike Maccallus
Roy Jones was one of the greatest....however some fights for watever reason didnt happen - but even if they did happen and he won people wud still criticise cos thats wat people do...neva happy. Dont kno wat u got till its gone.....
