im just watching this fight, am in rd 5.
so far james toney has been incredible. i knew he was good but after
seeing him lose to roy jones jr i doubted his overall ability.
well im now in awe, his jab is amazing, his defence is amazing, his array
of punches amazing and his accuracy amazing. im amazed.
iran barkley is making it interesting with a decent workrate in each rd
so far but he really is outclassed by an amazing james lights-out toney
so has anyone else seen this fight and is willing tochat about it,
im gonna carry on watching it now so ill keep refreshing this thread :)
what a shame he didnt show these skills vs jones jr
incredible defensive and counter-punching skills
this fight was the reason why i've decided to get into boxing, hit and not be hit!.I was looking for this fight for years, can someone please send it me , in his entirety, the james toney vs iran barkley fight?
his skills are great but think of how barkley fights hes made for someone like toney, makes him look even better than he is, it was a cracking fight tho
Perfectly said!
If there was a fighter tailor made for James it was Iran.
Barkley took one helluva beating against Toney...I believe in a prefight interview with Jim Lampley Barkley was asked about his age and if he lost what would he do next...he responded to Lampley by saying..."Jim, Im gonna rob your house"
The greatest line I have ever heard from a fighter.
This was only a year before the Jones fight.
Possibly his best career performance, he really did a job on Barkley, countering him with very good combo's. But that's where Toney is at his best when his opponents come at him throwing heaps of punches trying to tear his head off. He does look amazing in some of those fights.
But Jones is a totally different kind of fighter and was pretty much untouchable at one stage.
For anyone who wonders what Toney was capable of in his prime - THIS IS THE FIGHT. A masterpiece by Toney (and Barkley was the perfect foil for it too).
Barkley was a v.good fighter around 86/87/88 but he took such a beating from Tommy Hearns he was never the same again, i got his career on VHS. Barkley was washed up in 88 and he fought JT five yrs later, Barkley was weightdrained for JT & im afraid he was a zombie by then, but still impressive counterpunching from JT in thatfight frm what i remember but im sure it was expected (i lost this fight a few yrs ago, is it on the net anywher?)
Barkley's a scary looking mofo as it is but imagine what he looked like the morning after that beating
Toney had put in some lackluster showings before this because he was killing himself to do 160 and the Barkley fight was his first title fight at 168 so I think that made all the difference, pity he wasn't in the same shape for Jones or we could of had a fight.
Toney is an all time pro. Like he says he was born to fight, everyone else was taught.
id say hes quite a bit better than jones jr.
regardless of the loss.
if you aint seen the fight dont read the rest of this post
the ending was a bit strange, i only got a few seconds of it.
so barkleys corner stopped it. well it was reasonably one sided.
Yeah that was a shit hot performance by Toney even though Barkley was made for Toney's countering he did look the business in that fight and hit Barkley with every shot in the book, the guys so relaxed under pressure it's almost unfair!
of course barkley had seen better days, and his style WAS made for toney
but that doesnt take anything away from the amazing performance by toney.
hes calm and calculated, arrogant and insulting while beating your ass :D .
he really defines "playing possum"..its alot like foreman vs ali.
i wont spoil the fight by telling how it goes (for those who aint seen it)
im just entering rd 8
