Guys, do any of you think that this fight would have been different than the first one? I am a fan of both guys. Just because I am PR does not mean that I hate boxers from other countries like some here apparently do. I am one of those who think that a rematch would have been much different, since rumor has it that Gomez was unprepared for that, the biggest fight of his career. Gomez was dying for a rematch against the great Sanchez. In fact, Gomez was so upset after Salvador's death, that when a PR reporter interviewed him and asked for his reaction, he started to cry. When the reporter asked him why he was crying, Wilfredo said because he was never going to have a chance to prove that he could beat Sánchez. I also heard that he could not believe that Sanchez' death was true, so he went to the funeral to make sure he really was dead.
I am not saying that Gomez would have defeated Sanchez. I just think the fight could have been more competitive.
I see some people picking Sanchez by KO; no way that'd happen again without something similar to the swelling of Gomez' eyes again.
Sanchez might get a decision, but no KO.
To me, I considered Wilfredo Gomez a perfect fighter prior to losing to Sanchez. I thought he'd win but Sanchez' legacy up til that point was one of always coming out on top too!
Since his passing, that legacy has become permanent ... hard to pick Wilfredo to beat him based on precedent, the results of their first meeting and the fact that Gomez was moving up in weight to meet him.
Wilfredo was a beautiful KO'ing machine though. A smooth Puncher.
You don't see that too often.
People need to realize that Gomez made Sanchez..After Sanchez beat Gomez, Everyone was in awww...But Gomez didnt think that this was going to be his toughest fight..when Gomez fought Zapate is was his biggest fight..another great Mexican Legend. Gomez was partying alot..and when Azumah beat him Gomez was on the downside of his carreer and to get beat by a guy like Azumah Nelson is nothing to be ashamed about.
I meant Carlos Zarate..i wrote Zapate...

i know about gomez and i saw the fight. sanchez was too much for him and he would kick his ass again and u know it.
No, I don't know it. No one will ever know, unless you have a time machine.
This comment gives the impression that you either don't know anything about Gómez or you did not see the fight.

I Have seen Some of their fights and have seen the fight between them many time. I believe that salvadors speed and ring ability would of been to much for Wilfredo.
One more thing. Sánchez looked the stronger of the two, but don't think for a second that Gómez was totally dominated. The fight was a war, in which Gómez won some rounds. Some rounds I scored for Wilfredo because of his aggressive swarming style. At the time of the stoppage, I had it 67-65 for Sánchez. The official scorecards were similar to that.
Wilfredo Gomez could have fought sanchez a second time in my opinion... Hell, he faced 4 more guys before Sanchez died!!
What about a rematch with the next guy that Ko'ed his @SS and put another loss in his record...?
Azumah Nelson did not died... Why Gomez did not want to avenge that second loss?? I say cause he knew it would of been a worst beating!
Is easy to say I could have beat Sanchez in a rematch!
Sal Sanchez is DEATH.
I also heard that Gomez was having trouble making the weight for the Sanchez fight... But wasn't that supposed to be his first fight at 126..? :D
yea no excuses. just like oscar vs hopkins, did de la hoya look his quik, speedy boxing self naw. he just got beat by tha beter man. if tha guy is dam 32 and 0 wit 32 ko's u think h'ed be fuking round not training? i doubt it, i know boriquas got allot of prime man i doubt he would have not trained. he just got beat
That just palin stupid. This is the biggest fight of your life and you dont take it serious? WHO'S FAULT IS THAT. These are just excuses from the Gomez camp. The reason he didn'took the same was because he was fighting a guy who was just better than him end of story.
The rematch happens just like the first.
