Jose Luis Castillo failed to make weight for tomorrow's rematch against Diego Corrales, first weighing in at 137 pounds, two pounds over the lightweight limit of 135. Castillo went into the sauna to try to sweat off the extra pounds, but came back 50 minutes later weighing even more, at 138 1/2. During this second weigh-in, a member of Castillo's camp was caught lifting up the platform of the scale (thus making Castillo's weight appear lighter) by NSAC Executive Director Marc Ratner. Castillo's final attempt also clocked in at 138 1/2, and the much-anticipated bout will now turn from a lightweight title bout into a 12 round non-title special attraction.
thoughts? i bet what's-his-name, whoevers going is pissed.
i agree with what someone else said where phychologically this will "lessen" the stakes of the fight.
I remember a situation like this once before, for a vacant title. They still called it a title fight, but only the fighter who came in at weight could win the belt. All the other fighter could do was stop him from winning it, but not clain it himself. I don't remember who it was, though.
I think that's the trick the sanctioning body used to get their fees.
Regardless, I still think that the title fight should be declared a forfeit and the belt awarded to Corrales.
i agree, but thats what they said.
Shaw even held out the possibility that the fight still could be for the WBO and WBC lightweight titles, even though castillo weighed in well over the limit for that class.
"They want their sanctoning fee's" Shaw said of the organizations "and diego still wants to fight for a title."
That what it says in the paper
The organizations would love to get thier hands on the fees for this fight. I am sure they are pissed off, now that they are cut out of the fight. I am not sure what the WBC/WBO is offering Corrales, but it better be a sweet deal if this ends up being a Title fight.
Rasta Smoker
The Corrales people would be stupid to allow that to happen.
(Allowing this to be a Title fight)
i agree, but thats what they said.

What makes this a sad event is that fact that Castillo has been begging for a rematch which Corrales proptly gave in kind.
Now why the hell is Castillo not making weight? How unproffessional could that be? He has no excuses on this one not being able to make weight. He had 5 months ahead of him to prepare and yet he failed to make weight.
I agree belts aren't that much. But the bottomline is that one must comply with a set of standards which are fixed for both fighters. Corrales did his obligation to make weight. How come Castillo won't? That's just lame.
i have to agree here castillo had more than enough time to get his body down to weight ...he is not the first boxer that has had to work a little extra to make weight , also considering that this is his biggest fight of his career you would think that he would not risk it by not making weight ..
Hmm, I think Castillo did that on purpose because he knew that his doctor would cheat or they had some kind of an agreement with the doctor or something. Just my theory.
i dont think castillo meant for his team to cheat..but who knows.
surprised they were cheeky enough to try in front of a large televised audience.
has this been tryed before ?

i see noone mentioned the fact that castillos camp has already
tried to cheat..and was caught. bet they did it before as he was
137 1st time then miraculously 138+ after losing some weight. :D
Well the fact he didn't make the weight is a disgrace, but if the fight goes ahead then I suppose it shouldn't distract us from what promises to be a superb fight.
Castillo does deserve the financial punishment for his camps weighing in shenanigans. It could have cost us a battle between two great warriors.
its not about the titles its about the weight he should of made 135, hes fuckin lucky the fights still on
yes, if they'll cancell it, whoa, whole boxing world would freaked out.
If the fight turns out to be a classic then who cares if there aren't titles on the line? They're just alphabetical nonsense and are becoming increasingly irrelevant to the sport of boxing.
Still it is an annoyance that Castillo couldn't make the weight as it could well be used as an excuse by either fighter after the contest is finished.
I don't think he did it on purpose, but I think it shows an utter lack of professionalism for which he should be punished.
I totally agree its bang out of order

It is a big screw up i dont doubt that.

didn't they do some pre-weigh in their gym before going to the official weigh in?
