I love boxing and its athletes, but wow...i just watched Kid diamond vs. Campbell on tape and i gotta say...i was watching with my bud and we were actually getting heated. If refs, trainers, and doctors don't stop fights when needed, boxing is a joke. IM through with boxing if they continue to send boxers to the grave and hospitals with brain damages. Letting legends keep on fighting and taking punishment(i.e., holyfield, RJJ, etc.) is crazy. One sided beatings like the Campbell vs. Kid Diamond fight ain't even entertaining. I don't wanna hear that bullshit about how we are in a hurt sport, because so is football, and basketball. If we wanna watch people get brutally beat, and sent to the hosspital, we are better off watching that bullshit UFC or a real life execution or something. Im not saying that i dislike watching boxers boot it out, but these days, its just getting too brutal and those DUMBFUCK refs are like fuckin machines that don't have common sense. I wanna see a change in our sport.

boxing is left up to the fighter when he wants to quit, unfortunately after time your ability to realize its time to quit is gone. Although in a situation like that or with Holyfield for instance, they should just make a judgement call as well as most fighters. But the difficult thing there is that how can you tell a 37 year old who has been champion and in wars all his career that has no signs of damage (what doctors can see) that he cant do it because he is healthy. Then there's the 48 year old fighter great condition been in many many fights through so many years and is still healthy and allowed to fight despite age and performance.
It's a no win situation for either side. The ref has to make the call when a fight can and cannot go on despite the fact a person is fighting back periodically or non stop but is just being punished and is going to lose anyway on points, it just has to be stopped. But when I think back to the days of Lamotta, Marciano, Ali and all those great fighters, they fought 15 rounds, their knee would touch the canvas after a good shot they would hop right up and without a count continue to fight. Refs back then set the standards for today and unfortunately boxing is boxing and its probably not going to change. Thats what comes along in the sport and it's dealt with and always has been.
Gatti-Ward 1 was hardly a one sided fight. There was no action in the KD - Campbell fight, it was a brutal beating of Kid Diamond that went on for too long. Take into account what happened to Levander Johnson not too long ago, and you have what should have been a much earlier stoppage.
A competitive fight where two guys war with each other like Coralles-Castillo is what people look for, or even Pacquiao-Morales 1. Seeing a guy get beat beyond recognition is not what you should be watching boxing for, unless you're a sadist.
yes, i agree with you.....gatti-ward 1 was NOT ONE SIDED! IM talking about fights that should be stopped at the right time...when there is no chance for the other fighter to win.
I kinda disagree. Its those fights that people want because they want to see some action. Would you rather see a boring John Ruiz fight and seeing two man making love and not hurt or would you rather watch a one sided brutal ala Pacquaio-Barrera, Gatti-Ward etc. Well, I know that you would choose the John Ruiz fight if youre gay but, lets be serious here.. No action, no money, bad for the sport.

I agree to a point, but saying boxing is bad, and that you are done with it because of one incident is kind of silly.
I was saying at round six or seven that the fight should be stopped, especially in light of what happened just last week (or has it been two, now?) with Levander Johnson. That could have left him with some serious, serious damage.
It is the referees primary concern to see that no fighter is damaged beyond repair ina fight. Things happen quickly and brutally in the sport and you must be on top of your game when calling a fight. However, it is also the fighters corner man who is looking out for the fighters best interest, or atleast he is supposed to be.
The corner man has alot of things that he could be thinking about while watching his fighter being methodically chopped to the canvas. This corner man/trainer may have invested countless hours with this fighter in leading to this bout. This man may know that if his fighter is to lose this bout that the big pay day will slip away. He may hold that towel tightly in his fist, debating whether or not to throw it in. "If he would just throw his right, slip that........." By that time it could be too late.
The trainer/corner knows a fighter better than the referee ever will. They know his tendancies and postures. They are the ones who know first when a fighter has had too much. But with alterior motives they will let the bout continue in hopes that their man will land the blow and pull the bout out.
Let me tell you, first hand, that being a referee is a thankless and lonely job. No matter how well you call a fight somebody could be injured and there will always be that handfull of people that will love to bitch in your ear, no matter how the bout went.
The referees main concern in a bout is the saftey of the fighters. Most of the referees that I know have had no professional boxing experience. I find that having this experience is a huge help in calling a fight and knowing what a fighter may be feeling at the time. It is something that can not be learned from a book or taught in any 3 hour seminar. It is first hand experience and it is priceless when following the road of the referee.
I am in no way saying that a referee who had never fought can not call a proper fight. I am just saying that having experience in the ring,as the main participants, is a knowledge that can not be taught in any other form.
Rockin' :boxing:
