& this weekend proved it.
It's very nice that he showed an incredible amount of heart this weekend.
But....we're being told that this is the next GREAT fighter, & frankly....I don't see it. He should be mowing guys like Torres, big puncher or not, right down. It's not like Torres hit him once & hurt him....he REPEATEDLY laid heavy leather on this "technically brilliant" young fighter. I'm telling you now, Cotto is not the next Felix Trinidad. Tito was always far better than Cotto will ever be.
It's not his chin that's gonna do him in...it is his ROBOTIC STYLE. It's the way he fights that will see him EASILY beaten by the upper echelon of either the 140 or 147lb. class.
He just is too slow to get off. He has zero fluidity....everything, every punch/combo looks like it's been planned/thought out. This is fine, when you're not facing the best. But, when he faces someone like Floyd (right now a total MISMATCH), Htton, or Tszyu....I truly beleive you will see him handled with shocking ease.
I am not a "hater" of Cotto. I just have never been that impressed with him.
I was impressed by the torres that boy can hit!!!! to tell you the truth I've been wanting cotto to win so he can step up to 147 and fight margarito, after what I seen this weekend I'm positive that margarito would run over cotto just like he did cintron!!! but still it would be an exciting fight!
Let me guess, You're Mexican right?? Boxing is about 2 fighters getting in there and giving everything you got to come out on top..not nationality. For those who start talking about chins, heart & everything else, try getting in there yourself so you can see how hard the sport is. Boxing is 1 on 1 no team mates.
Oh shyt. Manny P said it so well. Big ups to you pimp.
Torres had a glass body. LOL. Or Cotto is jest vicious in ta mid section.
Eitha way, Cotto had a tough time AGAIN! Man, 3 fights in a row and he had storm in his way. Corley whomped his head and shook him bad like he livin in Harlem. Abdulaev was givin him problems aswell until ta eye swelled up. And now Torres hurt him like mad similar to RastaSmoka's boyfriend dumpin him yestaday.
I mean he can improve, but people can only wonder what happens when he fights Hatton and Mayweatha.
I wasn't putting down any fighter. I was actually defending Torres as an opponent. I was saying, if he had no gas it isn't cuz he is a bad fighter.
You are right, the body shots did have something to do with it. Low blows too.
I only saw one borderline shot, and that's the one that lead to the pull-down called a knock down in the 5th, I believe. That one was on the belt but might be borderline. The other shots were legit and the ref just sucked. He called two KDs that were clearly push downs, need I say more?
well now that you put it like that - i suppose me saving up a little money in order to see cotto would be pretty good in the long run.
but its all a pipe dream - after cotto cleans up the 140, hell move to 147, clean house, then jr middle, clean house, 160 ... yeah - clean house then close the show by blasting out lacy in 4 at a catch weight of 171lbs. that wont save me money.
yeah, bitches. cotto KO lacy 4.
Dude, that last line had me roooollllliiiiinnnnggg!

Ya see not all Puerto Ricans are stupid.
Finally a post on Cotto I can agree with!
Your absolutely right, Im ashamed of myself BAYA, absolutely ashamed.
You have to admit though that Giacetti could be the key!
Again I apologize I just thought it would be cool if Cotto dropped down a few notches and you were able to go watch him, thats all pal.

i resent that, this was in bad taste and mean spirited.

If Cotto can hire Richie Giacetti he will become the greatest Junior Welterweight of all time, you want upper body movement, Giacetti is the master look what he did for Iron Mike!
Without Giacetti Cotto will be fighting in clubs very soon which may be a good thing because Baya will be able to afford to watch him fight.
Richie Giacetti is god, the sooner realized the better.

Cotto took a step back on Saturday night.
The positives he showed (balls, calm through the storm, & body attack) aren't as glaring as the vulnerability he showed.
Again with the misconseptions. Torres had fought 6 or 7 weeks earlier in PR and went back to the gym when he got home. He trained for 5 weeks, that's plenty, especially when he was already in shape from the previous fight.
Also, he lives and trains in Barranquillas, which is at sea level, just like Atlantic City. There is no difference in altitude. The jet lag is something most fighters deal with and that's why they fly in a week early (as they both did). Barranquillas is only a 2 hour flight from Puerto Rico, so that's not that much of a difference. It's the same as a fighter going from Florida to N.Y. to fight (the difference anyway).
And to say that he ran out of gas is to take away from Cotto's brutal body attack. Did you see the post-fight? Torres gave all the credit to the body attack. He said it was the left to the body that took away his stamina and power. That's what happens when you get hit hard and repeatedly to the body. Not undertrainig, hard body punches.
Please get your facts straight before you decide to put down a fighter.

good post. yeah it was the body attack - look at this VICIOUS body attack!!!!
Going downstairs
Torres was a last minute replacement though. He had only trained for like 2 weeks.
Also he is coming all the way from South America to New Jersey. I know how messed up I was after going from UPSTATE New York to New Zealand. How it took longer to gather my stamina and my wits. Considering the difference in climate and elevation and everything he was experiencing with his traveling, and not having much time to prepare for it.....His lack of stamina was likely for these reasons.

The point is, while Hatton and Floyd are taking laurels, COtto is taking leftover shit. We all have to admit that. A lot of people question his skills. A lot of people doubt his talent. The only way of proving you are an elite is to beat those above you.
Right now, Cotto is below the food chain of Hatton and Floyd. It's a fact and if he doesn't live up to the expectations, he will simply be dismissed as another wannabee.
hatton JUST fought his first live body in tszyu...before that he was fighting scrubs...what is he like 40 years old or some shit? how any fights did it take for him to finall step up?...its about fucking time, and not only that, but he's scared to fight out of his backyard.
so yeah, hatton is no superstar.
Fair enough, but Torres HAD NO STAMINA whatsoever. He was dead after round three.
And we can say he wasn't world class, because thats a title you earn. Cotto was called a world class fighter and was being hyped (wrongfully) by HBO brass to be the next great Puerto Rican fighter. I think he can... he sure has better boxing skills than Tito.
I think Cotto's performance sunk HBO's inflated view of how good Cotto really is. Unfortunately for us, I think we're going to see another year of Cotto against fringe competitors.

Come on guys... Did you see Cotto in the Torres or Corley fight??? He was doing the "baby elephant learning to walk" routine with his legs WAY TOO MUCH for my liking!
Maybe his chin isn't as bad as people are making out... But there's definatly gonna be a problem for him there.
it's not his chin it's his defense, he was getting tagged with straight hands all night...he needs to be more polished
Cotto and his team underestimated this guy because, A) they fought and beat him easily as an amateur, and B) he was regarded as a fighter who had fought bums as a pro. So, what happened? Cotto came out trying to trade with a puncher. He should've been the counter-puncher and relied on his quick reflexes and combinations to dispatch of Torres.
Cotto has the ability to fight going backwards, as he did against Abdullaev, and that's the type of fight you want against someone who can crack. It's OK to put the pressure on but you have to know when to back up and deliver punishment as your opponent is coming to you.
It was the body assault that did Torres in, he said so in the post fight presser. He said he was unable to deal with the powerful shots he absorbed to the body. Only one of those punches was borderline low, and that's the one he received on the ropes, right before he fell for his last KD before the KO (round 6?). You can see him grimace every time Cotto even faked the left to the body. Ask any boxer and they will tell you that a body attack will take away your stamina and your will to fight.
Cotto will come out calm, cool, and collected for his next fight and will show the world how good he really is. Other than Ricky and Floyd, what other top 140-pounders are left for Cotto to fight? We know the Floyd fight won't come yet and Hatton's promotional problems will probably keep him from fighting for a while, too. So, my guess is we'll probably see a fight with Holt or with Jr. Witter.
if he fights holt - shit i don't want him to fight holt.

He shouldn't need to be showing guts & determination at this stage, if he's as AWESOME as he's been made out to be.
I'm not saying Cotto isn't very good....I am saying he's not going to be great.
Nash...
Cotto does not have better boxing skills than Trinidad did when he fought at 147.
Trinidad was far faster & sharper, more fluid, than Cotto has been or ever will be.
i dunno about cotto not having better boxing skills than tito - don't get me wrong, i loved tito as a fighter - and both cotto like tito have a bunch of deficiencies as fighters but cotto - minus his last fight - has better all around boxing ability than tito. shit is .... it hasn't been put on display lately. but i can see your POV on that though.
