Calzaghe Fears Biased US Judges!!!
Joe Calzaghe remains confident he will still get his dream unification fight with IBF champion Jeff Lacy.
The WBO super middleweight king was due to fight Lacy in November, but those plans were scrapped after Calzaghe broke his hand in his last defence.
"This is the first time a champion has put his title on the line, but I've got injured," Calzaghe told BBC Sport.
"But I will fight Jeff Lacy, regardless of money, regardless of anything else, it's a fight I definitely want."
Lacy's promoter, Gary Shaw, has denied claims by Calzaghe's promoter, Frank Warren, that the fighters are contracted for a back-up date on 4 February.
Shaw has been very critical of Calzaghe's injury in beating Evans Ashira earlier this month, saying the Welshman should never have taken the defence.
"Alright, he's chucking his toys out the basket and Gary Shaw has a big mouth and shouts a lot," Calzaghe added.
"But it's a fight that should happen and at the end of the day I see no reason why he can't come over here and fight, because it would be a bigger draw over here.
"So we'll keep talking and at the end of that day this fight will build up even more - I want to fight Jeff Lacy next.
"Frank said provisionally there may be a date in February for the Lacy fight, so that's what I'm aiming for."
Shaw appears to be trying to hold out for home advantage for his fighter, but Calzaghe is reluctant to travel to the United States.
Lacy, 28, also took a warm-up fight, against former Calzaghe victim Robin Reid last August in Florida.
Champion Lacy outguns poor Reid
While the Mancunian was outclassed, Calzaghe believes Reid got a raw deal from the judges and admits he fears a lopsided decision should he fight on Lacy's turf.
"To be honest, looking at the judging with the Robin Reid fight I don't think I'd go to Florida, because that was disgusting the way Robin Reid got cheated," Calzaghe said.
"Lacy was on top, but the scoring was so against Robin Reid."
While he waits for the moneymen to haggle out a deal, Calzaghe is just concentrating on getting back to full fitness.
The 33-year-old from Newbridge has a history of hand problems and says this latest injury is coming along nicely.
"It's been a clean fracture, which is good, so it should heal back to normal," Calzaghe said.
"It should be as strong as ever and next week I'm starting running."
You cant accuse Joey boy of being coward. And he does seem to have a point about potential bias.
