I have on dvd Roy Jones sparring with this much bigger, white ox of a man named Scully. Looks like a lightheavyweight or a cruiserweight. Is that you, Iceman? Would you like to tell some stories of sparring with Roy? Looked like you two really went to war at times in those sessions.
No excuses Juy theres a reason why Eubank ducked Bomber Graham .. they sparred alot and I think Eubank knew Bomber would be very very difficult to beat .. Eubank beat up Denys Cronin in a british title eliminator in cardiff but didnt take the opportunity to fight Bomber .. and then later that yr Eubank and Bomber were due to fight in a WBC world title eliminator to see who would fight Roberto Duran but again Eubank didnt want to do that
Yeah, man, Bomber was one of the most underrated boxers EVER. Hagler was in no hurry to fight him back in the mid 80's when Herol was ranked high.
After Herol dominated Ayub Kalule (Leonard said Kalule was his most difficult ever win), Herol was then the #1 contender before the Hagler-Leonard fight.
Bomber

I got the tape of him fighting Julian Jackson and how the heck did he play with a worldclass fighter like Jackson like that? couldn't believe it when I saw it Graham was boxing his ears off and Jackson only landed one punch in four rounds and that was the KO Damn Herol Graham makes Pernell Whitaker look easy to hit!!!
Bomber
I was actually almost set to fight Graham back in 1990 at 160 pounds but, honestly, at that time in my life and career I wasnt experienced enough to fight him and no matter what I did I wouldnt have beaten him. 160 wasnt a good weight for me and he was super sharp at that time. I was like a novice pro back then.

Jt
I have a whole chapter on my times with James. We sparred back in the 90's and training camp was a GREAT time... James had the rep of being a terror but, really, I had the greatest time in training cmap... it was like summer camp. JT is MUCH different than you would peg him to be.

Pro
Hard to see... I mean against RJ in the Olympics he didn't look good at all other then he was very tough but at the same time he DID make it to the gold medal round of a tough weight class so who knows?

Korean
Last I heard when RJ first turned pro they offered the Korean a fight with RJ on TV here but he refused, saying he had retired from boxing because he felt disgraced for winning the gold in that fashion.
Book
My book will also have in-depth, first hand stuff on Jones, Toney, pazienza, Ali, Foreman, Wilie Pep, Archie Moore and many others. I cover almost every area of boxing, amateur and pro

I more than held my own sparring with RJ. You can see it on the tape. The thing is I had good defense, held my hands high and that worked with well with RJ. If you were slower than him and hands werenth igh it could be NO FUN LOL. I never sparred Gerald, though. When RJ and I sparred I was a top rated 165 pounder and he was a top rated 156 pounder. RJ had sharp power, though, as sharp as any 165 at that time.
thats because u were 21 and he was 16
i'd like to see this tape...it seemed early in roy's career he like to stay in the pocket more throwing lots of combos instaed of the light heavy weight version of backing up and counter-pot shoting 1 shot at a time. do feel what happened to gerald influenced his change in style or is it a combination of that plus age?
That is me... I train Clay-Bey and I am also writing a book about my experiences in Boxing. I have a whole chapter about RJ plus A LOT OF OTHER STUFF! More than 400 PAGES. If you ever want to read a free excerpt just e-mail me at IceJohnScully@aol.com and I will hook you up
