For all of you who hated or dislike Sugar Ray Leonard. Post your reasons here. I must admit that Ray was a very talented boxer and he had some great fights and you cannot take that away from him but here are my reasons for disliking Ray.
1. He was very very afraid of Aaron Pryor. When I was a child I lived very close to the neighborhood that Ray Leonard lived in. I used to see him sometimes in the Chesapeake bay seafood house etc. Anyway Aaron Pryor was so determined to fight and beat Ray Leonard that he actually moved into Ray's neighborhood. He would go down to his house sometimes and call him out and Ray was soo scared. (Supposedly Ray even got a police restraining order against him because he didnt want any part of him) I know you all remember Pryor coming to Ray's press conferences and getting in Ray's face etc.
2. He eluded some opponents or waited till the perfect time to get people. (When they got old, came off wars etc.) besides that his win over Tommy who I feel was beating the hell out of him for like 13 or 14 rounds was not cool. I mean let the man continue it's a championship fight.
3. He was basically the golden boy of the 80's.
4. More to come I am just too tired to type.
Sugar Ray Leonard offered Aaron Pryor a fight for far more money than he'd ever made before.
But never let the truth get in the way of a good Legendary Nights myth.
why should he be affraid of Aaron Pryor, he fought wilfred benitez, prime hearns, hagler, and durans who was a this moment one of the baddest boxer on earth
you thought he fought a prime Hagler??
you should rethink that one
Heck, I can claim to be the greatest of all time. Don't mean it's so... ;^>

Glendower, trying to impress the Prince, says, “I can call spirits from the vasty deep.” And Hotspur replies, “Why, so can I, or so can any man; But will they come when you do call for them?”YEAH BUT YOUR A NOBODY SO IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT YOU SAY.
leonard can claim to be the greatest of all time period.

Not sure if this was mentioned, but I dislike him because he really didn't fight very long. Look at his final record 36-3-1, when Duran won over a hundrend fights. I hate the pitty patter style...and something that makes me laugh is he got KO'd by Hector Macho Camacho....Come on Sugar Ray no matter what age you can't get KO'd by that guy. haha

hum
you did not read my initial post.
I stated that Leonard was a great fighter in the ring, not so much out of the ring.
I think both assessments are very reasonable.
i did read. leonard can claim to be the greatest of all time period.
i gave you credit for it your right, i think hagler the greatest middleweight of all time your just being a dipshit about leonard when he's obviously great.

You are making yourself look like a fool, quoting wikipedia to claim that Hagler did not want a rematch with Leonard. Because
1) it's wikipedia
2) it means you dont know shit about it.i gave you credit for it your right, i think hagler the greatest middleweight of all time your just being a dipshit about leonard when he's obviously great.

Fans can always bring out the name of someone you didn't fight.
If Pryor really went to Ray's house looking to call him out, then Ray was tright to call the police. That's not ducking, it's protecting your family from unsafe situations.
Taking the first Duran fight was riskier. If your WW champ in 1980, who's the biggest risk out there?
Taking the first Hearns fight was riskier.
right:ugh: where does it say he wanted a rematch.he moved to italy after the fight.stop being such a hater seriously.

Basically that's the main thing I didn't like. He should have taken that fight, and I bet you there would be no debate about Aaron Pryor's talent.
Nothing wrong, but that is the type of things that separates Leonard from Robinson, Duran and the likes.
Also, let's face it. We are not talking about minor details. We are talking about buying your fights. Leonard fought Hagler on a track. And he made Lalonde come down from lightheavy to below supermiddle.
Imagine if Oscar made Hopkins fight at 153, you know what I am talking about.

HAHAHAHA
hagler retired OMG... i cant believe someone would write this bullshit
hagler wants a rematch
leonard: "sorry, I am retired"
hagler retires
leonard comes out of retirement
LOL Leonard made absolutely sure that he did not have to share a ring with hagler ever again.
Last time I checked it was Duran, who gave a rematch to Leonard the same year, Leonard gave Duran a rematch 10 years later or so.
Robinson was a bitch to negotiate? when did he impose ring and gloves on his opponents? when did he have his opponents fight at ridiculous catchweights? NEVER, in fact he fought for years giving away 10 pounds.
get your facts straight before typing that kind of crap.
right:ugh: where does it say he wanted a rematch.he moved to italy after the fight.stop being such a hater seriously.
Some serious hating going on in this thread...
I've never understood why people try to diminish a guy's ability because of what they think of him as a person. SRL was an incredible fighter. Pussy puncher? Not even close...

He probably started the negotiation around there
But I understand you
What's wrong with negotiating the weight and ring size? That happens in every fight across weight classes, it's just a few sometimes have all the leverage.

He did not give timely rematches or any rematches at all to Hagler, Hearns and Duran.
He used the negotiation table like no one ever did before or since (with the possible exception of De La Hoya for the Hopkins and Mayweather fight).
A great fighter in the ring, not so much out of the ring.
