I would just like to say roy jones jr is a very good fighter, but never truly fault to his skill level. I always thought true champion fight the best, and Roy showed me 1% of that.
Roy Is No Different Than Any Other Fighter. It Takes Two To Tango. You Cant Put All This On Roy. Its Alot Of Politics In Boxing. No Matter What He Is Still One Of The Greatest To Ever Lace Up A Set Of Gloves.
Why Is Roy Jones Jr Disliked/hated So Much?????
He's not. He's grossly over-loved and grossly over-rated. You'd have to be a retard to think otherwise.
hmm
1) If you don't like a guy talking in 3rd person, you must hate watching sports in general given that many of the top athletes do this. At least Roy doesn't disrespect his opponents by talking about their dead family memebers like some fighters do (Hopkins, Mayorga, etc). Again, hypocracy exposed if you hate RJJ for his talk when there are others talking WAY worse mad shit. Hyping oneself is not as bad as disparaging your opponent along with their family. Also, if you hate Roy because he doesn't promote much...that's just stupid unless you are Don King or Bob Arum. I mean, you ain't making money off of Roy so why should you care whether he shows up to promote or not? Not his job. Silly reason to "hate" anybody.
2) No, Roy didn't duck anyone. This has been over again and again. He fought all the competition at lightheavyweight, the best there was, as did DARIUSZ, but somehow, Roy is the one who ducked everybody...yeah right. People tried to say Roy ducked Tarver for a while and then shut the fuck up when Roy fought him. Hell, Roy is fighting Tarver AGAIN. Anyone who wanted to fight the number one p4p fighter needs to go to HIS division and become mandatory, like Woods and Tarver did. They were smart. And I don't wanna hear any old bullshit stories about Roy ducking guys who weren't even in his division like Joe C. That's absurd. Equally absurd is saying he ducked Benn. Roy never had an obligation to fight Benn. You can't say Roy ducked Benn when Benn was past his prime and Roy was moving UP to fight BIGGER fighters anyway.
3) The final thing about Roy's greatness. Haters get offended when someone mentions Roy as an all-time great. Get over yourselves. Roy is an all-time great, end of story, and his resume is good enough to support this, but the best evidence of his belonging with the top 25-30 fighters of all time is the WAY he beat people.
P.S. DM beat Virgil Hill, true, but barely. A large contention feel that Hill won the fight and was unfairly penalized in that fight. Decide for yourself after watching the fight. In any case, Roy stopped him with one shot and DM struggled immensely with him.
Brave
Roy's seeking a Tarver rubber match is the bravest move he has made in a career that sometimes seemed too saftey first. Win or lose all hail and mad props!
Other fighters unwillingness to fight RJJ?... Now I've heard it all... LOL!... :D
You will also notice that there is incredible bias towards Roy Jones Junior, I kind of "blind faith" where as just because Roy says he's great, people believe it... I noticed further up this thread that people refered that to Muhammed Ali. - Difference being../ Muhammed Ali backed it up in the ring... Not only did he fight EVERYONE, he fought EVERYONE several times, and "so what", Muhammed Ali lost a few of them... That doesn't take anything away from his achievements.
Roy Jones Junior fought an endless list of Glen Kelly's and Clinton Woods all the time there were some really meaningfull fights out there he opted not to pursue. :dunno:
Unfortunatly I had the miss fortune of having to explain his "career defining" fight when he ran from Ruiz for 12 rounds to my friends that are not so familiar with boxing.
They asked me what had happened to Lennox Lewis, "I thought Lennox Lewis was the Heavyweight champion of the World?... How come the papers are saying that RJJ is?"...
I replied - "It's called hood-winking my friend... Lennox Lewis IS the real heavyweight champion, he hasn't gone anywhere.. This rubbish you're reading in the paper is just some pantomine thing, It's like someone telling you they're the greatest without backing it and fighting the right people... Ignore it."
Roy said in a interview that he called Nigel Benn to fight and Benn wasn't available at the time. Some of Roy's opponents are underated. By the way he didn't run from Ruiz, actually during there fight he faught him straight up. He also got hit with a big punch from Ruiz in the first round and didn't fold.
Well, it's already started here on boxingscene.com with guys like TheTruth, but people will like Roy a lot more when he's retired. These kids are just finding out how great Roy used to be and expecting him to beat Tarver, and it's all cute, but at least wait til Roy is gone to say he could have beat so and so...
Whats started with people like me?
Well, I think Roy got a lot of hate for the whole DM saga. And then when he took less money and Clinton Woods rather than Jirov for much more money (the fight HBO and fans wanted to see) then around that time there was definitely some question about Roy ducking the best. But then when he beat Ruiz at HW, all was forgiven. But the haters came back out in force after Tarver2.
If he had fought DM and won, then retired after Ruiz he would have gone down as one of the top 3 greatest fighters of modern times. I mean, he would have been immortalized.
But Roy was never really the *true* champ at 175. DM upset the champ Virgil Hill to win the titles at 175. But Roy wouldn't fight him. The belts Roy got at 175 were paper honestly, because they were never won from the champ in the ring- they were stripped from DM for not fighting this guy or that, I forget. Most boxing experts recognize 2 lineages of the LHW championship- one from DM and one from RJJ. DM went unbeaten for 12 years during that whole streak of success Roy had, and beat most all the same guys at LHW that Roy did.
But yes, Roy is a phenomenal fighter. If he beats Tarver, then his legacy will be solidified, but not without a couple glaring blemishes.
He got a big mouth. People hate on Toney and Mayweather for the same reasons. They're the best so they talk the most.
I don't hate on Toney he is one of my favourite fighters, but Jones he talked a lot of shi* and ducked a lot of fighters Mayweather is not ducking people.
Listen I do not have time for a guy who wants to end up a cabbage he has been knocked out big time twice in a row accident waiting to happen
I don't hate RJJ. Actually I always liked him and wanted him to win against Tarver. I just don't think he was as great as a lot of people like to believe which makes me a hater in the eyes of some of his followers.
For example I believe he could've been beaten by Dariusz what is looked upon as some kind of blasphemy by some posters around here. Roy Jones was a great fighter and had a carefully constructed career. He's one of the Greats of the last decade but far from being the greatest. If that opinion makes me hater I can live with that.
Basically, you'll find that a lot of the people who hate Roy just have bias within them for some silly reason or another, and they turn out to be hypocrites.
Take Martin here, our good friend from England. Talks about Roy's unwillingness to fight people, never cites other fighter's failures to become Roy's mandatory challenger, never cites how other fighters were not willing to fight the Champ in the U.S., and last, but not least...
Martin says all this BS about Roy's unwillingness to fight top guys and take risks, but Roy faced many top 10 fighters in his weight class, a few hall of famers, and yet Martin will naturally ignore this and cite only the skewed "facts" which support his agenda.
What makes Matin the worst hypocrite of all is his Calzaghe sig. Calzaghe fucking backed out of a fight with GLEN JOHNSON...yeah, Joe has balls, lemme tell ya.
Damn.......That was nice.
i think jones ducking everyone is an exaggeration, he did not engage whole heartedly on a lot of fights but these facts can't be denied:
1)say what you will, he beat a 28 year old hopkins...and hopkins was no sloutch at that time. he definately had fresher legs and was much stronger and rugged...
2)toney was undefeated and pound for pound king when jones beat him. toney was ALWAYS having problems with his weight and no one thought anything of it until jones schooled him and everyone called foul.
3)look at jones' body. it's a middleweight body. and he climbed all the way to heavyweight...then went back down and lost 19lbs. in one month (yes ONE month as he was trying to seal a deal with tyson and not tarver so he was still holding that weight of 190+ those few months after the ruiz fight) to fight a hot tarver.
4)after fighting tarver and having two of the toughest fights of his life it was roy looking for him for his comeback...that doesn't seem to be a consistent attribute of a coward.
5)julio gonzalez beat dariuz, clinton woods gave gencoffe fits,
i like roy, but even i have to admit there was some fights he should have taken (benn, nun, jirov) solidify himself. but calling him a coward isn't right...as a fighter i believe that anyone who steps in that ring is risking their lives and i have seen first hand many unfortunate events because of the head trauma endured in the ring...it takes pure guts to get in the ring and do some 'soul searching'.
It's because he went around shouting that he was the best... But he's spent his whole career slipping up a weight division and down a weight division to avoid fighting the best.
Basically he's ducked and avoided the best in each division for years.
slipping up and down ey? the only time he went back down was to fight tarver, he never went back to other weights after he moved up, and he didnt avoid no one, ur like british buddies wouldnt come over here so it works both ways, im not saying they were ducking him cuz it aint even like that, they both wernt willing to go no where, and who else did he aviod? Gerald McClellan? wernt they friends? didnt Roy use to work in his corner some times? He beat Toney and Hopkins 2 of the best 2day but get no credit for either..
Why Is Roy Jones Jr Disliked/hated So Much?????
Actually I think Roy gets alot of love on this board. I've been to other boxing forums and damn near everyone is on Roy hate mode.
but to answer the question. Roy is hated on because he is one of the most talented fighters to lace up gloves yet there's alot of quality fighters that he never met in the ring for different reasons. I like Roy but he did leave alot of questions about his career.
hmm

It's like this, if you have talent/skills, and you are a talker, or bragging about it, people take it as being arrogance, overconfidence, or being conceited. As if you are MORE than anyone else. People don't take to kindly to an avid talker, unless they are an anchorman, DJ, talk show host, or a commentator. Its funny though, because if certain people were placed in the same situation, and had the same level of talent, more times than not they would act the same way...and run their mouth more than a little, and end up like he did with his :footinmou
But people love Ali because he wasn't just a talker, he was a doer. He didn't just talk about how good he was, or how bad everyone else was(well, I take that back, he did), but he did other things with his talking...like standing up to the draft board, speaking out against issues...his talking was also positive and not all about boxing.
