Don King comment (February 21st 1993)
"I am in the process of putting together a double-header at the Thomas&Mack for around May or June, Chris Eubank defending against Gerald McClellan and Nigel Benn defending against Roy Jones, and the winners of each fight will meet eachother later in the year man." - Don King
The reason it didn't happen was because Roy Jones chickened out of fighting Benn, he was Benn's mandatory at the time and had a chance to fight for the WBC title. But Jones backed out. Benn V Jones at that time had fight of the century written all over it and Jones backed out.
After winning the vacant WBO middleweight title (vacated by Eubank), McClellan had five super-middleweight wins in a row and was now Eubank's mandatory.
JuJuy, Benn and Eubank is not as popular as you think, in the Philippines and Thailand whre boxing is quite popular, there are a lot of hardcore and very knowledgeble fans, most people recognize Toney back then. The fight is free over there, not like in America where is PPV. The fact is everybody know Ali and Tyson, you don't hear anybody from British unless you asked them and only few, I mean a handful know Benn.
Evrybody know how Toney carrying around 200 between each fight from. He's the not the best conditioned out there but he was still beating people. His weight became an issue after he got schooled by Roy JOnes. If you look at the professionalism part of boxing, there's no one to blame but him
Yo, that has to be a joke. You're going to try to say Ali wasn't the most well known and popular fighter in his time, or even to this day? Or Tyson?
I'm talking about Eubank not being a recognised figure outside of America and Toney weighing 200 between fights when he was a Middleweight.
Well all I can say is that what you are saying is not true, I give up with you. What am I supposed to say?
What are you saying is just not true.
Thank you
JUYJUY

Well I've been to alot of places and it seems to me that Ali Tyson and Louis, all Americans by the way are in everyone's mouth. I think Jujuy you become fictional as times go by. Toney was more pupular than Benn was and Your boyfriend was non existent. I could have paid 100 bucks for anybody that mention your boyfriend's name in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
Like I said Toney weight usually 200 before each fight and each time he has hard time making weight. It was only became a news when he lost.

You forgot Tyson too.
Why don't you just throw in Michael Nunn, Jake LaMotta, Tony Tucker, Herol Graham, James Toney, Pernell Whitaker, Gerald McClellan, Billy Conn, Floyd Patterson and co too?
I degrade Roy Jones because he is a disgrace to boxing, who else do I degrade idiot?
Hey man not trying to fight, it just seems like you don't like anyone but Eubank or Benn. Chill JuyJuy...
don't degrade every other fighter that hasn't faced them constantly.

They aren't on the same level as Roy. Never will be. Good fighters but I certainly wouldn't classify any of them as legends on a worldwide scale. I have no disrespect for anybody who steps in the the ring. At the same time, this topic is moot. To keep bringing up your opinions about Roy and your "legends" on a daily basis is what gets old. What I'm not a fan of is beating a dead horse. Let it go. Or just go.
I agree, its Ok for JuyJuy to be a fan of Benn and Eubank but don't degrade every other fighter that hasn't faced them constantly.
Toney is from LA and people see him around 200 before each fight. I saw him before the McCallum fight rubbing with Hollywood and he was about 210. Don't be making fictional statement you idiot.
I lived and travelled in Asia (almost everywhere) for a while in early 90s , I traveled in parts of Latin Americ(Brazil, Argentina) and Africa ( SOuth Africa, Liberia) and in Europe. When I talk to boxing fans, most of them then mention James Toney, few mention Benn name but Eubank did not exist. Only in Europe those two guys are prominent. But the rest of the world, Most everybody knows Toney.
Well I'm sorry dude but Eubank had his fan bases all over the world including Canada, Turkey, Greece and Australia. Benn had a big fan base in Spain. Their fights were shown world-wide, Toney's were reduced to the US.
Toney said that he was at his best when he remained 165-170 year-round, which has to be when he fought the likes of Nunn and McCallum (when else could it of been?).
Would you care to elaborate how legends of the ring are not worth a damn please? and also explain what you are doing on a boxing message board because your clearly not a fan of boxing.

Serious as a heart attack.

In fact he was having hard time making weight each fight because he was like 200 something between each fight beating the likes of Nunn, McCallum etc and finally it caught up with him.
Bullshit. Toney said that he was at his best when weighing 165-170 year-round (only losing 5-10lbs for the weigh-in), he moved upto 168 to fight Barkley because he was weighing 180 at Christmas 92 (his highest ever weight to that point). He would weigh, according to the man himself, 180-190 between fights at 168 until before the Jones fight when he weighed a whopping 220 just six weeks out.
I dunno where did JujUy got the theory that Benn is more world renowned, the UK is not world. Benn was probably more popular in Europe but in Asia, Australia, Africa Latin America
The US is not the world, Toney's fights were not shown world-wide. Benn's and Eubank's were shown world-wide and they had fan bases all over the world, Toney had no fan bases outside of the US. Benn and Eubank were huge world-wide but not very big in the US.
I said Jones was Ring MAg fighter of the year 1994. Severely dehydrated, that's what Toney wants you idiots to hear. Toney wants to take everything away from Roy because Roy did not want to give his rematch. So he run a lot of excuses and all ya people feed up. In fact he was having hard time making weight each fight because he was like 200 something between each fight beating the likes of Nunn, McCallum etc and finally it caught up with him. If Roy Jones would have gave him his rematch, I don't think you would have heard all Toney excuses. He made all those remarks and excuse because he has personal vendetta on ROy and there's not a damn thing he can do.
Benn was willing to fight Toney but he wants half. He was not bigger that Toney, I dunno where did JujUy got the theory that Benn is more world renowned, the UK is not world. Benn was probably more popular in Europe but in Asia, Australia, Africa Latin America, Toney detroying Nunn was huge. Anyways Jujuy boyfriend never really made an effort to fight Toney, He's all talk. If there's a ducking here. It should be Benn and JujUy boyfriend. Toney offered them a contract but Benn and Eubank refused. Remember who did the offer, that's the one who initiate it.
