I've seen two posts so far that look to be critisizing Toney for not fighting a top ten fighter.
Who's available?
Here's who's NOT available:
Byrd (will take his mandatory vs TOS)
Ruiz (Toney can't fight him because of the WBA, and Ruiz is scared)
Both Klitschkos
Barrett and Rahman
Peter
Brewster and Luan Krasniqi (fighting eachother at the end of Sept)
McCline
The only note worthy fighters available are Brock and Johnson. Otherwise that makes almost the entire top 15 unavailable.
It's unfortunate, but not his fault. He wanted to fight Byrd, and since the IBF verdict, word is Byrd is more interested in Williamson (who he stands a much better chance agaisnt).
Personally I'd like to see him fight Kirk Johnson or even J C Gomez.
Why are BOTH Klitschko's out? Wlad hasn't signed to fight Peter yet, and if SP is holding out for $1 mill, it may not happen. Toney vs Wlad would be sweet!
He is, but Oquendo beat Bryd, and was robbed dirty. In my sig I still recongize him as one of the first.
Ruiz won his title in 2000, Oquendo didnt fight Byrd until 2003. :D
Oquendo signed with Dibella, just to give you guys the heads up.
Ruiz hugs, but hes still a good huger, who belive it or not, beat good qusilty fighters that way, the Heaveyweight divsion is all about styles, fighters beat each other, than lose to the most unlikely person nowa days. Oquendo could still be a contender, and the 2nd Latino ever to become champion.
Fres Oquendo also beat Byrd in the fight I saw, the refs were asleep on the fight. Oquendo should fight Brewster or Byrd and I would say he would likely be favorite, my opinion. Others may choose to disagree
Matt Skelton and Kirk Johnson are the only noteworthy fighters on that list.....None of them are who Toney should be fighting though. I am sick of that crap with Toney, he doesnt need a tune-up or anything like that he needs to fight a legit heavyweight again to get his name out there and not some bum.
Also to place it on the same night as Jones comeback is ridiculous and will flop on its ass, if Showtime really wanted to make a mark they would add it to the October 8th ppv since Toney isnt fighting a top 10 fighter.
Very well agreed...but at least it will keep him active
Its a miracel!!!! Sedas fighting this year!! yay!! :D
Scheduled Bout date opponent wld last 6 location ticket number

Still, Oquendo is lost, maybe losing to Ruiz, and getting robbed by Bryd affected his mental.

Didn't Oquendo leave Don King just now and sign with a new promoter? I remember he was in the crowd at Brewster vs. Golota and then a couple days later I saw that he had signed with a promotion company and I thought "hey -wasn't he just ringside at a DKP event?"

and where the hell is oquendo???
he still figthing he is not that old
Oquendo did beat Byrd on my card
But he also got knocked out by Ruiz...
I know Ruiz has a good right hand, he even hurt Rahman with it and dropped Holyfield, but if Ruiz beats you fair and square by a knockout, you don't have a shot at greatness anymore.
Tua's on the Briggs card. Valuev is scheduled for a fall fight, too, I read the other day on this site.
I don't know what's up with Fres Oquendo
I guess what I read about Valuev was somewhere else; his mention on this site was a movie role. Boxrec has him fighting that night (Oct. 1) vs. TBA in Germany
What about David Tua, if in shape cause Tua is making a comeback, Fres Oquendo or Nicolai Valuev

Heavyweight James Toney, whose 90-day suspension for a positive steroid test expires Saturday, will return to the ring Oct. 1 in a Showtime main event, ESPN.com has learned.
They've got to have a show "the first saturday of every month" per their America's Fight Night gimmick.
LOL - remember after the Ruiz fight when Toney said in the interview HBO was better than Showtime and Merchant was better than Jim Gray?
It must not have backfired having Lacy-Vanderpool, Wlad-Williamson, Ouma-Phillips up against HBO PPV Trinidad-Mayorga last Oct. 2...
I guess but give it to someone else, I think it is a poor move and it will take away whatever Toney does in the ring especially if Jones becomes victorious. You know?
I remember those words Toney was spewing but I guess Showtime is better than FSN. :)
I remember Showtime matching a ppv against the Trinidad return but they had a stacked card. Toney vs TBA doesnt cut it. They best have a damn good undercard to back it up.
Chris Byrd is a loser, he lost his last few fights but gets bad decisions his way, Toney will have to make a quick beating on Byrd cause Byrd gets all 12 round desicions ,even when he loses. Toney will need to show up in great shape to fight Byrd so Byrd wont get another 12 round gift desicion. Toney in shape can K.O Byrd without getting tired. We need Byrd to get taken out. I just dont think Toney can ever get in shape ,anymore.Maybe im wrong, Toney will not get in shape to go vs Byrd, thats why John Ruiz is best suited for Toney
One man who took out Byrd and was in shape was prisonmate Ike Ibeabuschi, he KOed Byrd in 5 rounds.
Byrd is the 2nd top heavyweight today in my book. I wouldnt call him a loser and his fight with Golota was ridiculously close and could have gone either way but against Oquendo and McCline Byrd clearly won those fights. If you count holding and tackling and shoving boxing then I can see why you gave the fight to Oquendo. But that fight was dirty as hell more so than a John Ruiz fight.
Toney vs Byrd is the biggest fight in the heavyweight division that holds the most credibility and it would have meant even more if Toney didnt test positive.
Matt Skelton and Kirk Johnson are the only noteworthy fighters on that list.....None of them are who Toney should be fighting though. i really hope toney fights byrd. hes the better boxer, and he loves to fight, i cant imagine him losing. I mean, the guy smiles when he gets hit, he is fun to watch, and has great boxing skills
If Toney is motivated enough to get into shape, hed beat up Byrd, i believe it but right now, Toney not in shape, I can only picture Byrd getting a 12 rd wrongful decision vs Toney,
Id like to see a tune up for Toney vs Kirk Johnson in a title elimination fight for Ruiz belts
