I think its the Thrilla in Manilla.
But I also consider Tyson vs. Douglas one of the best fights in the history of boxing also.
What are your opinions?
Of the fights I've seen, I'd pick these fights (in no order):
Gatti/Ward I
Gatti/Rodriguez
Chavez/Taylor
Benn/McClellan
Corrales/Castillo I
Barrera/Morales I
Carbajal/Gonzalez I
Barrera/McKinney
Hagler/Hearns
and others which I've forgotten...
james douglas beating mike tyson, though it may not be the greatest fight of all time, is by far my favorite fight to watch.
just the magnitude of the upset alone i think separates it from a lot of the fights previously mentioned. there were plenty of people behind both fighters in any of the other fights listed, but nobody believed douglas could win this one. i just love the way even the braodcasters dont believe douglas cann win until he does, even when its obvious he is dominating the fight.
the circumstances align once a century for a moment like douglas/ Tyson
It's tough to pick just one fight, but my picks would be:
James J. Braddock vs. Max Baer
Louis vs. Conn
Ali vs. Frazier 1
J.C. Chavez vs. Meldrick Taylor
Hearns-Leonard 1
Holyfield vs. Dokes
Holmes vs Cooney (remember the hype on that one?)
I've alway like Foreman vs. Lyle. but Corrales vs. JLC may be 1 step ahead of that fight.
can't forget about Holyfield vs Qiwi/foreman/bowe/tyson/cooper
Bowe-Holyfield I was the best of the Holyfield-Bowe trilogy dude. The 2nd fight was probably the worst of the three (that's the one that was overshadowed by FanMan landing in the ring)
Lol Ali had Foremans number? They fought only one time and then Ali didnt give him a re-match.That is like saying Holmes had Mercers number or Leonard had Haglers number.Ali didnt know or think Foreman would get tired. He realized Foreman was to strong for him to try to box period unless he got tired. He realized Foreman was much faster on his feet than he planned so boxing wouldnt work. But anyway Ali vs Foreman was a boring fight but so were just about every other fight Ali was in.I am not talking about how much hype was around a fight i am talking about how exciting the fight was.
Ali had foremans number. he dominated the pace of the fight, and in the end, knocked foreman out. leonard didnt knock hagler out, and holmes didnt knock mercer out, all those decisions went to the judges. ali dominated the fight and knocked foreman out, so im pretty sure he has his "number"
I've seen every fight that's ever been a candidate for greatest fight ever. I'm talking Ward-Gatti I, Ali-Frazier I and III, Ali-Foreman, Vargas-Trinidad, Morales-Barrera I, all of them. But when your favorite fighter participates and WINS a truly amazing fight and performs the greatest comeback in the history of boxing, surviving not one but two knockdowns and coming back to win by knockout in the very same round with both of his eyes sealed shut, how can it not be your favorite fight of all time? Castillo-Corrales all the way
I think Benn-Eubank was a huge fight for British boxing, it got British boxing on track and the great era started there and then (the great era ended when Benn and Eubank retired, with Naseem Hamed the one hope left). Benn-Eubank did so much for British boxing and not only that, it was an AWESOME fight too!
that's what i'm saying..ali had foreman's number...so he knew (i don't even think angelo dundee was too confident) he was going to beat foremen....but the thrilla in manila..oh man...i'm surprised both men didn't just drop and die...the temp in that stadium was said to be over 100 degrees...
I was also suprised by how Frazier stayed up in the first round...wats so great about that match is that frazier looked like he was about to get knocked out in the very 1st round.
And yea, your right....it was over 100 degrees! Thats why they called the match the "closest to death fight" in the history of boxing.
The rope-a-dope with foreman was a great strategy because Ali knew that Foreman was just a great puncher. He couldn't last for the full 15 rounds. so he just was tiring him out until he was so tired, he just got knowcked out. Thats why its also one of the best fights in boxing history...but yea your right...thrilla in manilla tops that match.

...the rope-a-dope?? w/ foreman?...uhhh...i would think the thrilla in manilla would top that....
off the top of my head the best battles were
gatti-ward I
morales-barrera I
holyfeild-bowe I
hangler-herns (classic)

The greatest is probably the Rumble in the Jungle. .

I dont think anyone could dispute the trilogy Frazier/Ali fights at all.
You are probably going to see a lot of people say Castillo vs Corrales....
Personally my favorite all time was Lamotta vs Robinson....Out of all of them it doesnt matter they were all great.
Hagler/Hearns is also great it packed more action in one round than you ever see in a complete fight today.
Leonard/Hearns Amazing how Leonard was trailing behind badly and came back and knocked out Hearns. I think this fight really defines the 15 round fights as seperating the champs from the chumps.
Probably the greatest heavyweight fight ever was Louis vs Conn hands down.
