im not sure if this is true, got it off a website
A Sports Illustrated story in 1993 didn't paint a pretty picture of Marciano's life after boxing. It said he was obsessed with collecting his payments for personal appearances in cash, evading paying income tax, having numerous sexual encounters with women other than his wife, never picking up a check, consorting with Mafia figures, and loaning more than $100,000 to finance a Cleveland loan shark.
On August 31, 1969, the day before Marciano's 46th birthday, Barbara Marciano had planned a joint birthday party for her husband and herself (Barbara had turned 40 on August 30) in their Fort Lauderdale home. But Marciano, in Chicago, chose not to attend. Instead, he flew with the nephew of a mobster to make a personal appearance in Des Moines, Iowa. The small plane crashed in a cornfield in Newton, Iowa, killing both passengers and the inexperienced pilot.
if all this is true, iv lost respect for this man. i still have MAD MAD tons of respect for this man, but defenitily not as much.
When Marciano actually died he had a couple of millions in silver buried and they never found it because he never told anyone. It was precation for war and habits from the depression and not want anyone stealing his money that he was seemingly short on.
Frank Sinatra had mob ties but people still loved the man. Marciano was involved in some of that stuff but I rather be friends with the mob compared to pissing them off. Just because you are friends with the mob doesn't mean your are a bad guy or invovled in that stuff.
Marciano was a respectable fighter.
JUYUJUY, how about Lewis, he seems pretty nice and respectable. What does Steward have to say about him.
Just more rubbish from someone who doesn't like Marciano. As for the cash thing. Back then it was common for people to deal only in cash and hide it instead of putting it in a bank. Lots of people who grew up in the Depression or immeadiately thereafter did not trust banks. When dealing with boxing promoters and such, wouldn't YOU want cash? I'd never take a check from Don King or Bob Arum. Pretty shrewd and smart on The Rock's part. As far as being cheap, well yes and no. He didn't piss his money away like Tyson did but he did provide a very nice living for his family and could be generous to good causes.
To say Marciano was tied to the mob is like saying someone who gambled in Las Vegas in the '60's and '70's was tied to the mob. Vegas was controlled by the mob then and so was boxing back when Marciano was fighting. At that time a certain amount of respect was due to certain people. Just the way it was.
As for the day he died, to say he blew off a birthday party just to make a buck is slimy. He had a previous commitment that his family was aware of and was heading home asap when he died.
nothing seem to suprice me anymore, but when i found out that my girlfriend take amfetamin,e and other drugs without my aknowlegde i
was broking..i suspect something when she was acting weird and lost
a lot of weight but i never though about it.. something is better to be unknown.
If I remember there was a peach of a left hook earlier in the fight that put Johansson down too (almost put him through the ropes?). That second left hook later in the fight was just awesome, I mean the finisher, if I remember he let out just a quick left-handed body shot in close to set it up and then 'boom'. Then Floyd tried helping him up afterwards?
Floyd also had the Cus D'Amato style defence ofcourse, he really is an under-rated fighter! I think he may of froze out of fear against Liston, similar to Spinks/Tyson.
Not to mention underrated power. Have you ever seen film of the second Ingemar Johansson fight? Ingo was expected to be the big puncher in that matchup but Floyd nearly killed him with that left hook. The way his foot twitched as he lay there comatose will always stay with me. Patterson was a great guy but he had a wicked left hook when he wanted to let it rip.
I think that if Floyd had the devil in him, he could of been the best HW ever.. but he did lack that bit of natural aggression. Because both Ali and Tyson have said that Patterson had faster hands than they ever had, I think he had darn good skill too (to say the least).
Great choice. Floyd may be the nicest and classiest man to ever win a title in any weightclass period. It's no wonder the press hated Liston so much for brutalizing him.
Obviously none of these guys ever raped someone or assaulted a cop like Tyson or Liston, but I can think of very few fighters that I've never heard a bad word about out of the ring. George Chuvalo for one maybe. Also Max Schmeling. Joe Walcott and Ezzard Charles. Hm...Jess Willard. Michael Grant. Primo Carnera. Buddy Baer.
Floyd Patterson. That guy was always severely shy and just kept himself to himself, retired from boxing and just locked himself away reading the Bible!
He Died.
Marciano is overrated.
i thikn your officially the stupidest person on the planet
please explain how he was ovverrated.
y is that? cuz he came back to KO a gy, beat them in the rematch as well.
PLZ EXPLAIN ASSHOLE!
i have only heard good things about marciano, how generous he was, he even quit boxing for his mother, because she could take it no more. the guy has a good heart if you ask me.
Marciano had money. The guy didn't die poor. There was said to be at least $1 million unaccounted for at the time of his death that was never found. He was EXTREMELY disorganized and kept poor records of his money. He was cheap as hell, you have that right, but he had a generous side to him as well and many times he had other more needy fighters like Joe Walcott substitute at appearances in his place for very good money.
You take any man, especially a boxer who makes his living on violence, and look at him under a microscope and there is going to be ugly spots. Joe Louis did coke and nearly choked one of his wives to death. Dempsey might have beaten/pimped out his first wife for money and drank excessively. Good old smokin' Joe Frazier was caught beating his wife just recently. Gene Tunney, the refined bookworm, even had his struggles with alcoholism.

George Chuvalo for one maybe. Also Max Schmeling. Joe Walcott and Ezzard Charles. Hm...Jess Willard. Michael Grant. Primo Carnera. Buddy Baer. Mostly the big lumbering guys seemed to be decent sorts out of the ring. A lot of the guys who possessed great deals of killer instinct, well, it seemed to seep into their life out of the ring.
In general no one is perfect and I'm sure there are plenty of things our own parents, hell even ourselves, would be ashamed to let others know. It's just the ugly truth.
Marciano always admired the mafia He never let them have any influence on his fights, but he respected that they were poor italians like himself that rose above their standing in society.
As for his cheating on his wife, well just about every other champion did it, so why is it a big deal with Marciano?
lol i respect the mafia myself man!! LOL. but about the cheating , do u know if he did it. i know lots of champs did it, jus wandering if u kno for sure. cuz i never heard it on any other website but the one i posted
