I'll do this again at the end of the year, then we can have the "BoxingScene registered users'/posters'" selection" and see how it compares with the writers' on this site.
I am listing my Top 10 below of the first sixth months of the year.
Lest people say I'm being biased against KO victories and fights that are mismatches, I'm replacing my #7-10 with three other "most talked about" fights and an option for "other" in case you still think I've made an omission...
The three other additions will be Mayweather-Gatti, Wright-Trinidad (one-sided beatings administered by top 5 p4p'ers) and McBride-Tyson (retirement of one of the most famous pro boxers of all time)
My list:
1. Diego Corrales vs. Jose Luis Castillo
2. Jorge Arce vs. Hussein Hussein
3. Jesus Chavez vs. Carlos Hernandez
4. Oscar Larios vs. Wayne McCullough
5. Erik Morales vs. Manny Pacquiao
6. Ricky Hatton vs. Kostya Tszyu
7. Calvin Brock vs. Jameel McCline
8. Jean-Marc Mormeck vs. Wayne Braithwaite
9. Zab Judah vs. Cory Spinks II
10. Antonio Tarver vs. Glen Johnson II
What's your choice?
I voted for Corrales/Castillo fight but it is only one of maybe three fights that I have been able to catch all year.
My work schedule had been rough.
Arce Hussein
converted me into an Arce fan
that fight was amazing
Yes, it was. Corrales-Castillo had a great round 10, best round I've seen in my life, but Arce-Hussein was more consistent with more action throughout the fight than any other fight this year. It's too bad it was on an undercard to Morales-Pac and not a main event. Either way, it was a better fight, all around, than Corrales-Castillo (my #2) and Morales-Pac (my #3).
I respect the poll results, i.e. Castillo-Corrales by a mile. Just when you think Corrales was about to go, wham! bam!, who wasn't shocked?!!! It was a fight that wasn't over till it was over! Kudos!
However, I voted for Terrible-Pacman. Why? In terms of anticipation and excitement (and PPV sales) that match generated, both before and during the fight (nobody blinked during rounds)it almost killed everyone with eagerness and anxiousness. But above all, it lived up to the fans expectation, (at least in terms of the competitiveness of the fight, coz a lot of guys wanted and expected Pacman to win by KO). With Pacman and Terrible getting on it, it was good to the last drop, i mean, last round.
I voted Corrales-Castillo, it was one of the most intense phone booth kind of a fight I've seen in years.
Arce-Hussein was also action-packed.
Morales-Pacquiao is a close 3rd.
Castillo-Corrales had me on the edge of my seat the entire fight! and the 10th round alone was better than the entire Morales-Pacquiao fight. idk how u could vote against that
Pacquiao-Morales without a doubt. More consistent action and was fought all over the ring. Castillo-Corrales, entertaining? Yes. Fight of the Year? No way in my honest opinion. Not to mention you need to be able to stomach that type of phonebooth fighting in the middle of the ring to fully enjoy it. I'm not much a fan of that though enjoyed the fight none the less.
Pacquiao-Morales was SLOPPY.....too sloppy to ever be considered on Corrales-Castillo's level.
Erik & Manny did a lot of flailing, & stumbling.
The only reason Corrales or Castillo ever stumbled was because they had just eaten a huge bomb.
Corrales - Castillo without a doubt. Don't see how anyone can have it any different without having missed this one. The fact that some people do, just shows how lucky we've been so far this year with great fights - let's hope the second half of the year continues the trend.
