Regardless of weight, regardless of generation:
My personal list (in no particular order):
1. Joe Louis
2. Muhammad Ali
3. Sugar Ray Leonard
4. Marvin Hagler
5. Sandy Saddler
6. Wilfredo Gomez
7. Henry Armstrong
8. Joe Frazier
9. Bernard Hopkins
10. Tito Trinidad
What's yours ??
damn that's a pretty bad list, i know it's an opinion and don't want to be disrespectfull. but to have joe frazier? trinidad on your list is really wrong.
p4p no robinson in top 10? whitaker, joe gans, where's duran you telling me trinidad was a more complete fighter then duran. p4p duran is a far superior fighter then trinidad. trinidad is not even in his league. Like i said it's an opinion you have, but any boxing fan with some boxing knowledge, would agree with me.
Iwatchboxing i know you like puerto rican fighters, what do you think of carlos ortiz i think he's one of the best have you heard of him?
Well, like I said its a list based on personal opinion.
Thanks for the comments though....
Sugar Ray Robinson won 40 straight fights, then he lost the first fight to Jake LaMotta, after the LaMotta fight he won another 96 straight fight & beating LaMotta 4 or 5 more times during he 96 straight wins. Ali tried to be like Ray. :boxing:
OK, thats pretty good, thanks for the info

That was well put, course there are exceptions to every rule. thats how we get greats like those you mentioned. But others may not be as great as people think. ie... dempsey, rocky,Jack Johnson.
yeah agree with those guys that's why i didn't put them in my list of exceptions, although i think rock was a special fighter, but they where too small. I think there skills are exagerated and they wouldn't match well with most heavies, like tyson, lewis, holyfield, even guys like bowe are too big and skilled for most of those guys to overcome. i think those guys belong in the top 10 all time heavies in terms of accomplishments and stuff, but head to head i would not rate them high. joe louis is an exception he had the skills to pay the bills :p
no ofcourse i'm not offended :) i think your definitly right about that the skills of some fighters way back where lower in generall then today and that there skills where exagerated. but there are some fighter who don't follow that rule like a benny leonard a willie pep, Suger ray robinson, carlos ortiz, ezzard charles(lightheavy),archie moore and a bunch of others. so saying that leonard skills are less because he fought in that era i don't agree, i agree that in general the skills where lower but not with leonard and the fighters i listed.

if i said this wrong please don't get offended, i'm on leave and pretty drunk right now.

I'm sure he was smart in the ring, But 70 years later JCC has seen more than Benny. I'm sure he was great for his time. But fighters from the 70's on, "IMO" are better than the olders guys. They took th estyle from the odler fighters and perfacted it. Thats how we get The RJJ's and PBF's. very few fighter from back than would make it today. and thats Ali because of his speend and power mix. SRR, and of couse Foreman, because of his freakish power. well he was a 70's fighter so he doesn't count

here's something interesting form ray arcel on benny leonard, on how smart he was. he would make you fight his fight not yours.
Ray Arcel, one of the greatest trainers of all time, concurs on Leonard’s ability to out-think his opponent’s, (Anderson pp 121, 148-149), “Boxing is brains over brawn. I don’t care how much ability you got, if you can’t think your just another bum in the park. People ask me who’s the greatest boxer I ever saw pound for pound. I hesitate to say, either Benny Leonard or Ray Robinson. But Leonard’s mental energy surpassed anyone else’s.”
Arcel continued, “Benny Leonard was a picture. He was the one fighter who I felt could name the round with anybody. He could make you do the things you didn’t want to do. If you were a counterpuncher he would make you lead. If you were aggressive he would make you back up. He knew were to hit you…If you look at his record you will see he always fought good fighters. If you didn’t know how to fight, nobody would match you with Benny Leonard

Damn thats deep, because i don't think anyone could beat JCC in his prime. Alot of people was pissed about the decision with Taylor, But after the fight Taylor had to go to the hospital for internal bleeding, and was never the same after. JCC hurt him the whole fight. he was very powerful for his weight.
yes he was i ain't denying the man was great or that he had a thick skull like some guys say :p , but i believe he can be outboxed, problem was he would make alot of fighters fight his fight wich is great but i don't think he could do that with leonard because the man was smart period. so you would get a taylor kind a fight but without the brawling(wich was taylors mistake) i believe too that if taylor had not trade with chavez the fight would of been easier and that he would of have won the fight by UD. leonard takes this fight he outboxes and outsmarts chavez. how do you think it would go GREAT1?

i personally think he would beat him they are both great fighters but look at whitaker who fought chavez not even at his best weight and beat him, you could compare leonard to him only his defense isn't that good as whitakers although still great. but his offense is better, he had real punching power. it would go like the meldrick taylor fight, he would basiclly outbox chavez, but not make the mistakes taylor made. taylor had the tendicy to trade (brawll) wich was a mistake that cost him. leonard would not do that he would stick to boxing. so i see leonard outboxing chavez and win a UD. like they said leonard was one of the smartest fight to ever lace a pair of gloves.
