GL: What did you think about the Ricky Hatton-Kostya Tszyu fight? Floyd Mayweather Jr.: "I actually didn't even see the fight. From what I heard it was a wrestling match. I couldn't believe that so the other night I saw a round or two of the fight, and from what I saw there was a whole lot of wrestling going on. You know I tried to get the Ricky Hatton before I fought DeMarcus "Chop Chop" Corley, but the guy turned me down. They turned down the fight and Frank Warren sent us a letter saying they weren't ready to fight." GL: Prior to last weekend you really seemed to want to make a fight with Kostya Tszyu. Do you have that same desire to face Ricky Hatton? FM: "I think there's always going to be bigger money when you got two young undefeated fighters instead of one guy having a loss. On both ends, both fighters are looking to upset one another and the fans would be on the edge of their seats because they would want to see who's going to get the loss. But the fans should already know what'll happen if Ricky Hatton ever decides to face me. He's a real, real, dirty fighter, he rabbit punches all night and he loves to go low, but he's nothing that I can't deal with. "I think Ricky Hatton has been promoted extremely well. Everyone he's beaten had a rough career and was pretty much over the hill. When a guy is over the hill and worn down that's what happens. I truly believe they caught Kostya Tszyu at the right time. He was off for so long and all he fought was Sharmba. And we saw he had Sharmba beat before the fight even started. Sharmba was still intimidated by him from the first fight." "Zab could've beaten Tszyu if he would have got inside and tied him up. Tszyu doesn't have the best chin and he doesn't like fighting. He likes chess games. One thing Tszyu does got is a good equalizer, he could punch. But from what I saw all they were doing was wrestling with each other." GL: What do you think about Tszyu quitting on his stool? FM: "It's easy for a commentator or a writer to say he quit. But you don't know what was going through that man's mind in a big fight like that. Most writers and commenatators can talk about a fighter but they ain't never been in there, so the people who should really be writing the stories are the fighters. "And the people who should really be commentating are the fighters because they're the ones who know what it's really like. Guys talk like they're experts but how can you be an expert if you never boxed?" GL: Do you have to be a criminal to cover crime? FM: "That's two different things. We're not talking about crime, we're talking about boxing. We're here talking about boxing. I didn't say boxers should be the only one's but people need to think about what they're saying before they label this guy a quitter. Think about all the people he's beat. "They still say Julio Cesar Chavez is legendary and he quit before. I take my hat off to Kostya Tszyu, you don't know what was going on in his mind. You know what? If he wanted to quit, he deserved to quit after all the guys he done beat. And I'm not guys can't write about boxing if they're not fighters, and I like talking to you, but there's certain things that go on in that ring that people on the outside don't really know what it's like. "Boxing is like being a cop. One shot can end your whole career. I done bumped heads with a guy and been dizzy for two rounds. That's happened to me and I didn't really know where I was for a round or two, but I hide it from my opponent and everyone watching really, really well." GL: That's why when your career is over we're going to see the Flamboyant one in Hollywood. FM: "I'm trying to be what I can be. Like I always tell everyone, it doesn't matter what you write about me, as long as you write about me. No matter what happens, I'm comfortable and I'm truly blessed that God has put me in this position. I got my mansion and I got my Rolls Royce's, and I know there's other things I'm going to be doing outside of boxing that are going to make me millions as well. I know I'm capable of being involved with music, I know I'm capable of being an actor, I know I'm capable of writing a movie or a book. There's a lot of things I know I could do and I haven't taken any abuse in this sport so I'm going to be able to do all of them. "I will never show my weakness. Arturo Gatti has shown his weaknesses. He's shown that he could go down from a body shot. He's shown that he could bust up easy. He's shown that he's flatfooted and throws wide punches and I know I can go to his body and put him. They put Gatti against Micky Ward and Micky Ward never won a world title. I'll tell you what they did, they took two club fighters and threw em on HBO and acted like it was a mega-fight or something. "Micky Ward never won a world title, so what has he done. He's not going history for anything he's done."

What is Mayweather's PROBLEM???... Is he trying to be the next James Toney? If a fight between Hatton and Mayweather ever takes place then I'll bet all the points I've got on Hatton hammering Mayweather to pieces! Only thing is, I've got a sneaky feeling that Mayweather is gonna beat Gatti and then move up to welterweight successfully avoiding every dangerous fighter in the division. :eek: Now where have I seen these sort of actions before? Perhaps Mayweather is not trying to be the new James Toney?... More like the new Roy Jones Junior. ... oh well

remember the superfight between Hearns and Leonard? and the fight of the century between ali and frazier? weren't those guys undefeated, and that leonard hearns fight was the highest grossing fight yet in all of history. I think being undefeated like hatton and mayweather has a lot to do with suspense and ticket sales. The Jones loss to tarver was so great because most people considered that his first loss( they didn't buy the dq against montell griffin as a REAL loss). The first loss of any great fighter's career is amazing.

This is a bit of a weird one for me cos i generally don't find shit talkers that annoying, i like toney as a fighter and the amount of crap that he has come out with is most of the time funny, i've always liked tyson and the weird shit has never really bothered me but for some reason, and i like mayweather alot as a fighter, but it doesn't seem right with him talking so much shit even tho i know it's a combination of ego, to sell tickets, to get people muttering his name whether good or bad etc. I think PBF does a job on gatti but i'd love to see gatti knock him down or really push him close just so it shows him up a bit and maybe he bites his tongue a little in future, and a loss or 3 in a career really doesn't do that much harm (obviously depending against whom and in what way), too much emphasis on being undefeated nowadays.

Yes, I was shocked by that... He gives Tszyu mad props and defended him... so un 'Mayweatheriesh' :-) He's always been like that with Tszyu...to Floyd there are the fighters you respect and the ones you don't. The guys in his good books he has nothing but love before (except that, you know, he can still kick their ass) and the other guys are worth about as much as the crud stuck to the bottom of his shoe. You're one or the other.

I do have to ask - with you coming from Pensacola, Florida, is it not possible that you might always be looking at boxing through Roy Jones junior tinted glasses? 1) I've posted to you many times before. No regrets about stating you're a tool when you are. Mayweather just made you his tool by getting you to falsely question his greatness just because of his character. 2) I don't value what you think of me, especially when you can't even get my age right. I'm 19 and in college. hmm I think if he moves up to 147lbs without being the king of 140lbs 1st it'll harm his legacy much in the same way that Roy Jones Junior's legacy is tainted. 1) You're talking like Floyd has already bypassed the division. Anyway, if news comes out that Hatton won't fight Floyd in the U.S., you wouldn't believe it. 2) Roy fought the best lightheavy had to offer and the Brits at suppermiddle avoided him while he was coming up, and DM never fought in the U.S. not once. Not Roy's fault, therefore, no, the legacy is not tainted. You can view it the way you want, but in the end it all boils down to you don't like Roy or his style. You are a tool. It's just that simple. You fail to acknowledge greatness in fighters you don't like, which is childish and ignorant.

Mayweather talks about being macho, but he's just as scared as anyone else. He talks about Hatton turning down a fight with him but when i watched a Mayweather interview he looked nervous when they mention his name and that was years ago, he even looked worried when someone mentioned Harris. He's a great fighter but i wish he could be a decent person too, too much bullshit comes out of his mouth.

My bad, knowing that you're a Hatton fan, I thought that's what you were referring to when you asked what is Mayweather's problem. Anyway, how can you call that ducking if he decides to move to Welter-weight and fight bigger, more dangerous opponents? You seem when Roy jones Jr. moved up, he moved up to seek after some lower level opponents, but Mayweather wants to go after the big names, not saying that Cotto and Hatton aren't big names, but they can meet up with him eventually, after he becomes undisputed at 147.

Oh, I know FLoyd is trying to play the bad man... But I wouldn't tip my hat to him yet because it's not making him particulary successfull (business wise). His last fight With Brusseles sold a mere 2000 seats. If he was playing the bad guy like Mike Tyson has over the years, and could sell out arena's all over the World I'd say, "fair play" to him. But I think people are straying away from watching him fight because all this "trash talking" is not done in a very tactfull way, and people just don't like him. If you're saying that he's a bad businessman, than yes, you do raise some good points. I like it when people can get other people so outraged, but you're right in the sense that he can't convert that into $$$ as well as some other fighters could.

The more I hear from FLoyd the more I wonder why people have such a problem with him. I mean, his attitude is clearly meant to wind people up, so when you get upset with him you're just playing the part in his show that he expects out of you. His statements always have the same elements: so-and-so's not a real fighter, I don't care about him, fans/writers don't know what they're talking about, blah blah blah. I tip my hat to him because he's successfully worked out a simple yet perfect formula to get people pissed off all of the time. And I have to say that while he exaggerates the truth I never really disagree with him. Gatti is a paper champ, no matter what anyone says. And he always pays Tszyu tons of respect and what he said about him quitting in this interview makes a lot of sense. So he respects the fighters that are legends or near legends and trashes guys who either are or might be his upcoming opponents. How is that different from any other boxer?
