Corrales Wants Hatton In Cardiff

WBC and WBO lightweight champion Diego Corrales is ready to step up a weight and fight Ricky Hatton in an amazing double-bill involving Joe Calzaghe. Corrales wants to face Hatton on the same card as Welshman Calzaghe's projected super middleweight unification with Jeff Lacy in November. Gary Shaw, who promotes both Corrales and Lacy, says he is already in talks to hold the fight in Cardiff. That proposal would see 60,000 fans packed into the Millennium Stadium. Shaw was ringside with his fighters to see Hatton's sensational win over former IBF light welterweight king Kostya Tszyu on Sunday morning. "Diego would love to come to Britain and make a super-fight with Ricky," Shaw said I have been talking with (American pay-per-view network) Showtime today about making the fight on the same card as Calzaghe-Lacy in one of your biggest arenas. "It is something that could really happen and it is the biggest fight out there at the moment. "Diego never takes a backward step and neither does Ricky - it would be an incredible fight. "He is the man Diego wants and he is willing to come to Britain to get him." Corrales holds the WBC and WBO lightweight titles, having stopped Jose Luis Castillo last month in a war most ringsiders described as one of the greatest in boxing history. Hatton's rival light welterweight champions - WBC holder Arturo Gatti, WBO title holder Miguel Cotto and WBA champion Vivian Harris - have already all expressed an interest in fighting the Mancunian next. But the move by Corrales' camp throws another spicy option into the mix. Manchester's MEN Arena saw 22,000 packed in to watch Hatton beat Tszyu. The same venue had been mooted as a possible site for when WBO king Calzaghe faces Lacy - providing the IBF holder gets past Robin Reid in a title defence in Florida on 6 August. But Cardiff was the other suggested place and the Millennium Stadium would be ideal to hold what would be one of the biggest ever boxing promotions on British soil. Source.Bbc sport :boxing:

The Millenium Stadium can hold 80,000!! That would shatter the current record of 47,366 from October 1993 which was when Don King co-promoted the Benn-Eubank II 'Judgement Day' at Old Trafford.

who should hatton go to america to fight a guy who holds no belts at that weight. if he was fighting gatti, mayweather or whoever else is holding belts at his weight fair enough. hatton is calling the shots for 2 reasons. hes the champ at the weight theyde be fighting at & he will likely fill the 60,000 seater millenium stadium and make it one of the uks biggest fights in recent history. ok maybe corrales could fill a 60,000 seater stadium. hatton will need to fight in the us in a major fight to win over the american boxing fans but for now hes hot property 7 the man to beat I see your point, but I believe it is stupid because most likely Hatton will be allowed to use the same roughhouse tactics he did in his last fight. If a guy has his chin in your chest holding your gloves & throwing haymakers it is hard for a real crisp technician like Corrales to do his work. In a fight where the ref keeps them apart & makes them box I believe Corrales skill will take over. I do see what your saying however.

This would be an awesome card if it happened. And you never know, this may not even be on PPV in the US. If this fight was out doors in one of the huge soccer stadiums, it would be a throwback to the 20s and 30s when more than 100,000 people would see a fight. Whether you think Hatton will win, or Corrales, this is pretty much a pick-em fight.

I remember that night... Guzman "little tyson" looked good, (:rolleyes: I think he won it by 2nd round KO), but Calzaghe was trying everything to get his opponent out of there but just couldn't. The other guy seemed to have come just last 12 rounds, pick up his cheque and leave. (p.s... I've been to the millenium stadium "Rugby" and it's a lovely stadium!). Yes the terrible Calzaghe fight I've seen once but the Guzman fight I have on CD...decent effort and it's cool seeing the castle around it. What was the last big fight to take place in such a large venue? I know that Kostyz and I'm pretty sure Leija fought in a big stadium in Australia somewhere.

yea that calzaghe jiminez as i remember. guzman was on the undercard i seem to recall first time we saw him. calzaghe stank that night against an opponent who came to last the distance and not a lot else.

Come on now... You know that when boxing conversations start, they quickly change direction. That's cool, It's more interesting that way. Calzaghe vs Lacy Hatton vs Corrales On the same bill would awesome!... And I think it could be a really BIG night for British boxing as I'm confident both fighters would win! Oh yeah, I'm just having a little fun with you guys...it's just that I see this news on the first post and then jump to end too see people talking about Winky and Hopkins and I'm like what?! :D While we're talking about this though, you seem to give Hopkins a lot of flak for ducking Winky. Well, at least he's decided not to fight him instead of agreeing to accept millions of dollars and then wussing out with three minutes left in the fight, like a certain Russian-Australian we all know :cool: . Seriously, though, at 40 it's amazing Hopkins is still fighting at all. Of course he's going to pick and choose his opponents at this point.

i owuodnt get oo excited just yet i covered the press conference for the Calzaghe V Johnson and Hatton V mitchell double header that was scheduled for june last year neither fight happened. boxing is a funny game, lots can happen between now and next year. If you don't believe this, just ask all those heavyweights that Roy Jones was supposed to fight :cool: .
