I hope all of the commissions do Joe a favor and keep him and his greedy daddy out of boxing altogether
you must remember that nothing sells tickets and PPVs like a white heavyweight fighter.even ppl who dont like boxing will purchase the event.the majority of the country is white,so when a big white guy that knows how to fight steps up he gets hella support, even though the fighter might not be very good.so you need to understand that mesi and his dad knew this, and chose an effective marketing route.unless u have the next jack dempsey on your hands youll have to be careful who your fighter fights, especially in the hw div,u dont go throwing your fighter in there with undefeated power punchers too early..especially if u are marketing a fighter like mesi who isnt all that great, you wanna put him against guys that pose less of a threat.
also when you got a white heavyweight in a title fight who sells out every crowd he fights in front of,vs.,say, a black heavyweight who lacks charisma and public appeal, but is the champion, deals are negotiated such as 50/50,rather than the traditional challenger gets 250,000, champ gets 5 million.it happened in the cooney bout, rappaport negotiated a 50/50 deal, that was originally 30/70 i believe,in favor of holmes..because they knew cooney would sell out,and holmes couldnt put asses in seats.thats just the way it is man.
so you gotta remember, it isn't being greedy.it's being smart.when you are on top you cant take fans for granted,if its you pulling all the fanbase, then you damn well deserve 50% as the challenger.
you have to understand, that alot of these guys have been fighting their whole lives, thats all they know. If he stops now he has nothing left, and he hasn't had a big pay day yet, that he could retire on. Fighters don 't get disability.
very true, it's all that Toddler Joe knows, he'd probably fuck up a side of fries at McKie D's but he could definitely box well.....
I'd like to see Mesi become an announcer (he did pretty good on Friday Night Fights a few weeks back) or a trainer, I'm sure that there are plenty of prospects in the New York area who would gain a lot from Mesi's expertise

He's not dumb for still wanting to fight. But he'd be dumb to continue fighting. Yes, he's his own man, but for him to continue fighting despite the condition that his brain was recently in is more selfish and lacking in good judgement than alot of people are considering. Boxing would take another blow from his death, there's no doubting that. But I'm sure this guy has fam or people that love him. That money isn't worth leaving them behind mourning his decision. The way I see it, he wants to get a couple more big fights and make good money. Possibly to take care of himself and his loved ones. But if he dies in the ring, then he still can't take care of anybody. If he wants to make money, he'll need to find another way, than putting himself in such a greater risk at getting killed. My thoughts.
Well I guess you made a pretty solid point too.
Not to mention the fact that Mesi would not only have the potential to end his life, but he also could likely end the career of the fighter that faced him. Fighters do not recover all that well from killing other people in the ring or putting them in comas, etc...if Mesi wants to risk his life than that is his business but he shouldn't be allowed to involve someone else in this.
Boxing commissions need to save fighters from themselves, like Mesi,Bowe,Holyfield, etc, in order to preserve the best interests of the sport. Boxing doesn't need another'ring of fire'. Boxing only suffers from these tragic incidents and the bad publicity they cause.

Mesi should feel lucky that he got injured before he ran into an actual power puncher like a Klitschko or Rahman or heck even Ruiz, because those guys would have ended his miserable life, Jirov has no power and he nearly killed the man, what would Lennox have done to Toddler Joe?
I've been outspoken on this subject for a while, and I still feel that this was Team Mesi's bad karma waiting to happen, they took the Gerry Cooney route with Toddler Joe and tried to inflate his record with a bunch of stiffs in order to get a few HBO paydays, it worked for about a year and then once Joe fought guys with a pulse he couldn't keep his feet under him....I hope all of the commissions do Joe a favor and keep him and his greedy daddy out of boxing altogether
I agree with you, he does know the possible results of his fighting again, and it is his body, and he made a good point about fighters rarely being checked after fights, and the mainstream boxing world never finding out exactly how often this type of thing happens. So IMO it would be truly tragic if he were to be injured or lose his life over a boxing match, but it should be his decision to make.
Yeah, but it looks bad on boxing as a whole if he comes back, and dies. Then people find out that he had suffered some brain damage before, and boxing is in a world of trouble. People will ask, "Why did they allow him back in the first place?" The answer is the silly: "It was his choice!" Yeah, it WAS, but if he runs a higher risk than you normally would, WHY would you let this guy back?
Boxing is still a sport, and there are still sanctioning bodies over it. If they say no, the answer is no. He's better off not coming back if he's been damaged in the past.
It his head. His body. His life. He should be able to make his own descisions on what he wants to do. And it not for anybody to judge. If gets braindamage in there, well he knew it was a risk when he made an assesment of the situation. And the situation is for him to assess. Not boxing fans or boxing commissions. He has not had many big fights. He needs money. If I were him I would probably try to get back in the ring and back to selling out convention centers in Buffalo.

Smart guy to hear out but come on life w/o boxing or take a chance at a serious injury or worst.
i think he is dumb for tryin to come back, if his brain was bleeding once then it can happen again, he should just retire. If he comes back and fights someone like klitschko he will be killed, or really damaged, i dont think he should put that kinda pressure on his opponent, i would feel really shitty if I fought him then all of a sudden hes blind or retarded or even dead.because of the blows that I layed on him, JUst retire.
