If Jones hadn`t gone up to heavyweight he`d have had an easier time with Tarver. Increasing in weight, then dropping down like he did was the cause of his decline. At his age his body couldn`t take it!
I know that's why it happened. It was a bad move going back to light heavy that fast to fight Tarver. Another six months and he might have beaten Tarver more convincingly.
I think he was having a bit of an easier time with the weight in the second, and he smacked Tarver around pretty good in the first, then he just got caught.
It doesn't make sense, but he wanted to prove he was the best at Light heavy, not at heavyweight. And he had no intentions of staying at heavyweight, so he went down to fight Tarver. It was close, so he rematched, and got caught.

I always thought he fought Ruiz after Tarver 1, guess I was wrong. Then I have to wonder why in the world wouldnt Roy simply say to Tarver "I'm hw now, if you want to swim with the big boys you gotta step out of the kiddie pool. I'm into bigger and better things, come up to heavy if you want a piece."...?

Um WHY take the rematch? Because 1) Ruiz was mandatory 2) Roy SIGNED for a rematch clause before they fought the first time. 3) Roy needs to make at least one single defense to prove he is a heavyweight champ.
The excuse is Tarver was taunting him so he had to vacate to fight him? Give me a break! HW is the most prestigious div in boxing and Roy one of the couple to climb into it from a few weight classes below. He could have easily told Tarver to come up to HW and face him. You don't run from a fighter by going UP in weight class! If Tarver refused he could be seen as just incapable of being a heavyweight champ!
Roy long before tarver came into the pic, he said he fight the HW champ one time. Yes he picked a safe oppent like ruiz. That fight looked like a typical roy jones jr schooling for 1 i wouldnt pay to see that again. And if i recall tarver didnt start runing his mouth intill jones went up. I would of liked to see jones stay at HW but not rematch shitty ruiz. you need to stop pretending. And how can you have respect for a punk like ruiz your idle. Some people pick the wrong dudes to look up to in boxing.
He let Tarver get in his head>> LOL Tarver is funny. Did you guys see the press conference after Roy beat Ruiz.. Tarver was there and he called out Roy.. He said " Roy stop runnin from me what do I have to do to get a fight with you, go to Pensacola and piss on your momma "LOL
actually he said "PISS ON UR LAWN". but still funny
Well regardless of what reason Roy had for not taking a single defense and mandatory rematch before vacating the belt, that's precisely the reason I lost respect for him. And that's also why I dont recognize him as a true hw champ. He never defended the belt. Any fighter who vacates a belt rather than defend it is not a champ in my eyes...thats just a disgrace. Especially when Roy simply moves down to fight a punk he already beat.
So serves him right things turned out the way they did. He should have taken the rematch, then he wouldnt have made Tarver a star, been KTFO twice in a row, retired, and had his aura of invincibility dashed.
He hadn't fought Tarver before the Ruiz fight. Tarver called him out, and he foolishly went down. His pride got the best of him.
Oh riiight, that's why Roy signed a rematch clause BEFORE the fight with Ruiz? Just another example of weak logic. Try again.
Yeah, it was just to get Ruiz to fight him. It makes a lot of sense. Even if you don't plan to fight the guy again, give him the clause and pay him some money for breaking it, instead of really fighting him again. It gives you a better shot at getting the match.
Skipping most of the garbage upstairs..
RJJ, only wanted to prove that he can become a HW champion. And he did just that by picking on the worst champ of all times (RUIZ)
Even before the fight RJJ announced that he will most likely not stay at the HW. He vacated the belt to go back to Light HW to keep his belts.
Why would he stay in HW and beat the bum Ruiz again? There was no money in the rematch and he knew he cant take on the big dogs.
yes i think thats true, jones wouldn't have stepped up to heavyweight if all the title holders had of been strong champions, he seen a weak link in the division and he exposed it, i don't think there's anyway he would of beaten the likes of lewis and klitshko, and he probbably knew it.
Oh what brilliant logic! Let's extend it further:
Why Roy lost to Tarver and Johnson?
I think it's simple: Roy sucks.
SnoopySmurf needs to go back to the cartoon network.
You are so right!
So what does it say about Ruiz who lost, let me see..
112-116 | 110-118 | 111-117 DUH!

See I can agree with that because Tarver was really still a nobody at that point. Roy was a legend and didnt have to step down in weight to face him to prove a point. Roy's pride was his downfall...now Tarver's career is built on that one single punch. And like Tyson's defeats by Douglas/Holy, that whole intimidation factor and invincible aura is now gone for Jones so every fighter he faced will no longer see him as someone who cant be beat. Thats why Glen wasnt intimidated.
Roy beat Ruiz I never said he didnt, but he should have taken the mandatory defense/rematch and been a true hw champ.
I agree about the Tartver thingie, I would have rather seen Roy get KOed by Ruiz sadley, only because hes a heavywieght and no one woulda really made a big deal about it,
Honestly, the real reason why there was no rematch was because the money wasn't there, very few people if any wanted to see Jones fight Ruiz again, the first fight was lopsided, and Jones already made history with the victory. Boxing is all about the $$.
Yeah. I would have liked to see Roy school Ruiz for another 12 rounds, but that's because Roy is my favorite fighter.
On Tarver and Johnson, both of those men owe their careers and lives to Jones. If Jones didn't fight Tarver, or beat him by more than he had, we wouldn't have seen a Jones-Tarver II. If Jones - Tarver II doesn't happen, Jones never gets KOed, and that means Johnson never gets a shot at Jones. If Jones wins Jones - Tarver II, which he very well could have, we don't see a Jones - Johnson, if we do, not in the same fashion that we did see. Those two should give Roy a portion of their paydays for making them what they are today.

i cant believe im actually agreeing with something the pretender is saying but he nailed it with this post.

I agree, i said he shoulda made Tarver come up and fight for the WBA belt but he didnt cuz Tarver was undisputed champ at Light Heavy, It was Roys pride that made him go down to show people that Tarvers not the man at 175. And also before the fight Roy said he wanted one fight at heavywieght and thats what he did,
Thepretender why did ruiz lose in the first place? i dont wanna hear who the champ is now i wanna now why he lsot that fight on that night and only that
There are fights you take rematches after but that was not one of them, it wasnt even a decent fight Ruiz just stood there and druled like he always does while he is holding a guy. He got beat up looked bad and always does. NO REMATCH
yea jones schooled ruiz in every round of their fight.why give him a rematch.if it would have been a real close fight i could see a rematch but when a fight is that lopsided,we wouldnt need to see a boxing clinic again.
Yeah really. The fact is Roy had a mandatory rematch with Ruiz that he signed for and in the end he takes zero defenses and chooses to vacate rather than take a rematch. Then afterwards he get KTFO twice and retired. Today Ruiz still the champ.
lol i knew there was something, he was getting taunted by Tarver so he took that fight instead cuz everyone thought he was ducking him, he already schooled Ruiz easily so why fight him again, instead he fought Tarver and won but eventually paid in the end for loosing all that muscle, Ruiz Jones 2 would played out the same way if it happened after the 1st fight.
