First, I will say that Larry Merchant made some jackass cooments when he said that Trinidad can't fight with any other middleweight besides DLH or Vargas. I think that is bullshit after he was praising him so much for the Mayorga fight. Also, I heard that Merchant chose Trinidad to win a close fight against Wright, so he's acting like the bandwagon type by thinking that Trinidad is shot.
Second, I think that Trinidad's demise was that he moved the wrong way all night long. He was supposed to move to Wright's right side, so Winky would be out of position to land those effective one-two combos. This would have also given Trinidad the opportunity to land some quick jabs and even some left hooks before Wright could land in return.
Third, I think that Trinidad made the horrible mistake of going for the Ko. This is the same thing he did against Hopkins. Wright is a guy with tremendous defense and a good chin, so a Ko was not the way to go against him. He should have tried a more technical style like when he was at 147. Check his fights with Whitaker or Camacho to see what I mean. Trinidad's jab was working perfectly in those bouts.
All in all, I noticed that Trinidad landed a few good jabs and body shots on Wright, but he stood in front of him and that was what Wright wanted. Had Trinidad moved to the right side of Ronald, things could have been different. This is just my take on things.
Two mistakes Don King/Tito etc made:
1. Over conifidence in picking Wright as a second comeback opponent. Wright had all the things to beat Tito. An excellent jab, defense and he`s a southpaw. Add Wright`s excellent chin, you have all the makings for Tito to lose.
2. Tito had lost his ambition. Tito retired last time he was defeated. He cited the reason being Hopkins wopuldn`t grant him a rematch. Then why didn`t he go and make a rematch by winning enough and becoming the mandatory? Because Tito just didn`t want to get his butt kicked again.
I think Tito came back for a few easy paydays and then quit again.
Wright just sped up the process!
Tito should not box again, he just deosn`t want it enough. He lacked hunger, a plan B and boxing skill. Whats the point in fighting for Tito?
I agree with the return bout. Freitas was embarrassed by Corrales and he is back. That is the perfect example. Trinidad should fight at least one more time against a good opponent.
Yeah, i seen it, he was great in that fight but like i said, this retirement was all wrong, come back for one more fight and get a win against an A plus opponent.Maybe King can talk some sense into him.If i was dominated like that, i would have some pride left and come back stronger.
Hey Excite, i have lots of Trinidad's old fights. The last southpaw before this fight, was against David Reid, who gave him some problems until he dropped that left hook. That fight was at 154, in that fight he didnt get discourage like in this fight.Everything went wrong in this fight. His corner wasnt helping as well.I felt this dad was clueless!A trainer like Goosen would have been good for Tito. Its wack that retired like that,i think it was the wrong way to go out!
You are confused because Reid was not a lefty. You must be talking about some other boxer. The last southpaw before Wright was Hugo Pineda in 1999. Anyway, did you see the fight against Jake Rodríguez? It was in 1991.
Tito always had problems against skilled fighters with jabs. See DLH, Hopkins, and Wright.
If you stand in front of him and trade, however, you're toast.

People have brung up the notion that he is not a middleweight after this fight.I disagree, i think he can fight at this weight.Would this fight be different if it was at 154?I dont know but tito indeed has become fatuated with the KO.
In case you have not seen them, try to check any of these Trinidad fights to see the good boxing he had back then:
1.Trinidad vs. Jake Rodríguez
2.Trinidad vs. Camacho
3.Trinidad vs. Whitaker

How about letting his hands go!Also the guy doesnt even have a jab.
Seems like you never saw Trinidad as a welterweight. His technique was very good back then. He just fell in love with Ko's and changed his style for the worse. His fights became exciting wars but he started to receive more punishment and lost a couple of bouts.
Trinidad should have gone to the body more. That was his only shot, he was headhunting through Winky's guard...which is what he wants people to do. If I were Trinidad SR....I would have told him to throw nothing but body shots for the first 8 rounds. Nothing.....but hooks and straight rights to the midsection.
