Floyd Mayweather Jr. was the most gifted fighter to come out of the 1996 Olympics, hands down. He won titles at 130 and 135, and beat the best in each division.
I recently got done reading a terrible article in Boxing Digest in which the writer does an article that was tantamount to oral sex on the former 2 division champion. In it they claim that Mayweather is the p4p champ because Hopkins is too boring. As boring as Hopkins is, Mayweather makes "The Executioner" look like Arturo Gatti.
Floyd Mayweather hasn't fought decent opposition in nearly 3 years, since taking 2 close decisions against Jose Luis Castillo. His last 4 fights in those 3 years have been against Victoriano Sosa, Philip N'Dou, Demarcus Corley, and an inexplicable opponent in Henry Bruseles. He is scheduled to fight Arturo "Thunder" Gatti for the meaningless WBC Super Lightweight belt on HBO PPV.
Where Mayweather has erred is he has admitted that he doesn't fight good opposition. On a recent FNF interview, he claimed that Arturo "Thunder" Gatti is a "C+ fighter". If thats the case, why would the "p4p king" be fighting C+ fighters?
Floyd Mayweather Jr. has long wondered why he isn't a main stream star as well as an attraction in the sport. Maybe the answers lie in the fact that he is an arrogant asshole who fights "C+" fighters, beats women, and doesn't pay child support, all while being terribly disrespectful to his opponents.
In my opinion, Floyd Mayweather Jr. is a disgrace to the sport, and it's honorable traditions and history.
Lights Out
My word on this topic is that alot of people buy into the pre hype ,,and that what they want to get your money for the pay per view,,,i hate when people say this will be a great fight,,,this is gonna be a clinic,,Gatti is not a C+ fighter he's a D- if that,,,pretty boy can pound anyone in that division , he'll anihilate hatton,,old azz tzou,,,and vivian harris,,,i like cotto but this is war nicca,,and any day ill eat ya food,,, Gatti is gonna git tore up in front of his peoples ,,,fans,,wife ,,kids an dog,,,only reason they say he got heart is cuz the nicca dont move and gets tagged with everything,,,ma grandma could stand in with gatti,,jus throw the jab grandma he aint gonna move,,,,now the nicca can take a beating but if thats what anyone thinks boxing is standing there taking a whoopin has no idea about the sport,,Mayweather u aint gonna read this,,,but imma say it anyways knock that bum out,,,do a dance,,,and les go git dem stripper bytches,,mata fact jus stand in wit him anyone he's knocked out have been bums like him,,,trade wit his azz show him that heart cant do shyt for you when u aint got a lick of talent,,Gatti jus get payed and take anotha azz whoopin,,,leijas was a diffrent level ma man.z,,,an u know mayweather is gonna bring dat big ole heater............
Not to be downgradin Weather and B-Hop, but where did these guys learn to fight? Excellent boxers, but they should also learn to brawl fo the crowd. Gatti will look bad this June bcuz of Weather mainly becuz Weather will beat him, but people won't get their money truly worth it. When they pay tickets to see gatti, people expect blood baths and exchanges. Weather wont trade wit Gatti though that fo sho!
it will be a merry-go-round circus
Ray Robinson did one thing that Mayweather doesn't, he fought the best guys possible, and ducked no one.

but i believe that mayweather has tried to fight the best possible opponents. when koysta is asked about floyd he kinda dances around the subject...when zab is questioned about PBF he says they are friends..blah,blah,blah...in the mean time floyd is calling out all these fighters...like oscar, mosley, koysta, etc.
in my view..what floyd is doing is smart. he's a natural lightweight..not a welterweight. he tested the waters with 3 solid guys then he's jumping in with a big name "B" class fighter. big bucks, big exposure. it's smart. then the demand for koysta will come (because seriously..besides hardcore boxing fans..who knows PBF and Tszyu?).
again as an ambassador i think he really isn't it...right now. he really needs to clean up his image and mentality. he's like a hormonal kid right now...lol
besides you can't compare SRR's resume with PBF...'suga' lived in an era where the doller was secondary to pride, honor, and respect...those days are gone.
Who cares? You seem to be the only one obsessed with his personal life. I could care less about what he does outside the ring. His personal life will have no effect on his legacy. He still would beat anyone from 130 to 147. Give it a rest man or find a more legitimate argument.
This is funny. Floyd Mayweather wants to be the face of boxing, a sport already with a bad image, and thats not a problem? I also have attacked what he does in his professional life, so why not comment on that? I feel like Mayorga here, sticking my chin out to Vernon Forrest.

True, Arturo Gatti is no C+ fighter, he is a B fighter. He isn't an A, like Kostya Tszyu or Winky Wright. If Floyd is the best in the world, then he should fight the other claimants to that throne, right. Fighting B class fighters is not the way.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. has the looks and the skill to be an Oscar De La Hoya, but his woman beating and unwillingness to pay child support and things like that make him a terrible ambassador to the sport. In the wake of the falls of Oscar De La Hoya and Roy Jones Jr., there seems to be no clear Tiger Woods type guy to fill the vacancy left by the 2 most recognizable faces in the sport. Floyd Mayweather is not that guy.

i see...well then...i agree...lol!
but as far as him calling gatti a C+ fighter...i don't think that gatti IS a C+ fighter...and i don't think floyd really thinks that he is. that's just a persona/trash talk that goes on. gatti is a solid fighter with power and tons of heart to keep mayweather busy. floyd knows this...
as for his outside ring antics. i totally agree. i don't like them. he doesn't need the whole 'gangsta' persona. in my honest opinion he could be as big of a star as oscar de la hoya..sporting coca cola and american express cards...but for some reason he has some anger issues (whether they are related to his father i don't know) and unless he cleans it up a bit he'll never be a good ambassador for the sport...
...Sugar ray robinson wasn't a saint outside the ring but the oozed of class all the time, ali was a trash talker but he was charming...Floyd is just a gifted athelete that was a huge chip on his shoulder.

I didn't feel like saying everything again. He hasn't been fighting the top flight guys in recent years, as evidenced by his last 4 opponents and his scheduled bout with Arturo Gatti. He gives the sport a bad image by beating women, assaulting bouncers, and generally being a bad person. He is a braggart who lacks the credentials, not the skills, to back up his taunting of his opponents. He is simply a black eye for the sport.

but i'd like to think that floyd has fought the top guys in his division aka hernandez, manfredy, and coralles. his time to fight the top guys at jr welterweight will come...he's just feeling out the pool...no need to go jump in a pool with your eyes closed before finding out that there is water in the pool to begin with...lol

This is an even better quote.
I disagree with the people you say have better resumes.
Winky Wright just beat Mosley twice and Felix Trinidad. Kostya Tszyu has beaten Sharmba Mitchell twice, Zab Judah, and ruled his division for 10 years. Bernard Hopkins has beaten Felix Trinidad, Oscar De La Hoya, defended the middleweight title 20 times, and is taking on Jermain Taylor soon. Floyd Mayweather has beaten Corrales and an overrated Chicanito named Genaro Hernandez. Should've lost to Castillo the first time. And in between fights, he stays busy smacking around his baby mamas.
If weight/size wasn't a factor his skills & style would beat anyone.
Excuses, he's got so many guys around him, why not fight the better ones? You say beating Gatti will make him popular? It's done wonders for Manfredy and Ivan Robinson.
Why does the things someone does outside of the ring matter?
He wants to be a main stream star, and why would that matter? The sport has such great PR as it is, with ring deaths and Las Vegas decisions, that having a baby mama beating, America's Most Wanted candidate as it's Michael Jordan or it's Tiger Woods would be the remedy boxing needs. Come on, come on! I know you are smarter than that. Thats why I love you!

It's utterly stupid to say I questioned Mayweather's skills, given the first line in the initial post in the thread:
"Floyd Mayweather Jr. was the most gifted fighter to come out of the 1996 Olympics, hands down."
So where the hell you are getting this, I don't know.
so i take it you're questioning the quality of his opponets? is that your argument?
I simply like The Prince's flashiness and pizzaz, as well as his resemblance to the star of my favorite show, Ali G. I like the guy, but I don't think he is one of the all time greats.
well you commented on RJJ's and Mayweather's resume on quality fighters and paralleled it to the Prince...
and disputing mayweather's skills is just utterly stupid especially for someone like you who has been in the ring...

What, so I appreciate the pageantry and the entertainment value of the Prince. I love it how I am martyred for my willingness to say and do whatever I feel is me, regardless of the consequences. You never hear me say he was the greatest fighter of all time or anything, so why do you have to defend Mayweather by questioning the fighters I like. If Mayweather is as good a fighter as you say he is, it shouldn't matter that I am a fan of The Prince.

i guess the biggest differents between me and you guys outlook on corrales is that i look at the first pbf/corrales fight as a fluke. it wasnt on a level playing field. corrales was beat before he got in the ring. he knew he was going to prison. he knew that the money for this fight was court ordered to go to his girlfriend/wife. he couldnt train properly. we need another matchup.
I feel generally the same thing internally, but in boxing there are no excuses. The fight was not fixed, both passed drug tests, Mayweather deserves credit for the victory, even if in my soul I feel it was tainted.
...and this is comming from a prince naseem hamed fan. lol

I highly doubt that. Corrales is still the same fighter he was then. It doesn't matter how big he is, he will never beat Floyd. Don't be fooled by Corrales's win over Castillo. Remember, Corrales has been floored 10 times in his last nine fights. He goes down too easily.
Corrales was knocked down 5 times against Mayweather, and I give Mayweather that. Corrales was knocked down 3 times in 2 fights with Casamayor, and Casamayor is a pretty decent puncher. But taking all those flush counters from Freitas, and only going down after Castillo rained hundreds of huge shots on him, and you have to assume that he has a decent chin.
i dont agree that Gatti is a C+, however its correct to say that mayweather needs to step it up, if he beats Gatti and not just win on the cards but really outclass than he can be called the p4p champ
In the face of Kostya Tszyu's 3rd round blow out of Sharmba Mitchell, Bernard Hopkins' ko's of De La Hoya and Trinidad as well as his 20 defenses of the middleweight title, and Winky Wright's last 3 dominant performances, Mayweather beating a guy for a meaningless WBC belt would make him p4p king? I think Diego Corrales has been more impressive in recent years. In his last 3 fights, what have we got?
Joel Casamayor W12
Acelino Freitas KO10
Jose Luis Castillo KO10
Floyd Mayweather?
Philip N'Dou KO7
Demarcus Corley W12
Henry Bruseles KO8
These 3 opponents have not been the caliber of fighter that I have come to expect the p4p king to take on. Mayweather hasn't convincingly beaten a good opponent since Diego Corrales in 2001.
I like Corrales a lot, but you can't compare him to Floyd Mayweather. Anyone have a picture of when Corrales is on two knees with his arms all streched out? lol
