was that rule even in eefect in this fight
i think it was great stoppage
but my dad n bro keep sayin he shoulda got a standing 8count
but i dont even rememebr if it was in effect
anyone know?
I thought it was a good stoppage. Castillo could no longer defend himself & was taking some big shots from the hardest puncher in the division. That fight could've ended like Grifith vs. Paret hadn't Weeks stepped in. Castillo is a warrior & wanted to go out differently but that's why the ref is there to protect the fighter.
But, lets say this wasnt a unification bout. WOULD there be a standing 8 count if Castillo is against the ropes like that and how is that administered?? Im assuming their would just be a stoppage...
Unlikely, but it's possible. I've seen refs give standing-8s, even when they unified rules are in effect....I think they just forget sometimes. Everybody's human.
Mostly, when a fighter is on the ropes like that, and taking a terrible "whupping", the ref just stops it, regardless whether it's a title bout, unification bout, whatever. I doubt that the type of match even crosses the ref's mind when a fighter is being beaten up that badly and is completely out on his feet. If he were just trapped on the ropes and taking some big shots, the ref might consider that it's a title unification bout, but not after he's basically just out and being held up by the ropes, and his own toughness....a fighter isn't going to recover from something like that, even if he's given 8.
The standing 8 allows for a seriously stunned fighter to be given an 8 count to recover and (hopefully) regain the ability to be competetive in the fight. Non-existant in the unified rules, though, which is why Castillo didn't get one. The unified rules are geared somewhat more toward allowing a fighter to finish his opponent when he gets him in trouble. No standing 8, no 3 KD rule, bell doesn't stop the count on a downed fighter, etc.
Also, when a fighter is being held up by the ropes, or trapped on 'em, and starts catching big shots and goes out on his feet (hands down, eyes rolled back, catching flush, neck-snapping powershots with no attempt to slip or return fire) the ref has no choice but to stop the fight, to protect the health and life of the boxer in trouble. I haven't seen this fight past the 6th yet, but when I do finally get to watch it, I doubt I'll have any issues with the stoppage myself from what I've read here. Anyone who wants a fight to continue under those circumstances is no fan of the sport of boxing, they just like to see people get beat up, and Boxing can do without that type of "fan".

Even if there was a standing 8 count rule in effect, how do you initiate it with Castillo STILL STANDING against the ropes...The ref would have to come in and "stop" the fight????
were you guys watching the fight or just highlights? THERE WAS NO STANDING 8 COUNT RULE!!!!.....NO 3 KNOCKDOWN....and anyways...if there would have been...chico would have got up at 7 instead of nine....he knew what he was doing...he wasnt knocked silly..
If Castillo was anywhere near conscious enough to know what was going on at the time of stoppage he should have taken a knee. It's okay for people here to not know the rules, but the fighter has to know what to do in any given situation. He clearly wasn't protecting himself anymore, so the stoppage was good.
Under the Unified Rules, used whenever there is a unification match, there is no standing 8 count, ever.
I still don't undertand all the people calling this a premature stoppage. Were I a betting man, I would have put money on Castillo by KO. I like Castillo. He's an exciting fighter to watch. Thank you, Tony Weeks, for stepping in so that I my get to see him fight again some day.
There was no 8 count allowed by the rules plus I think it was a great stoppage by the ref. Castillo will always want to continue as long as he is conscious; he was senseless and could only be hurt worse if it was allowed to continue.
i can't believe some people are asking for an 8 count. isn't this a unification bout? fight stoppage are up to the refs decision and when he handed it out on the castillo-corrales fight, it was of great prudence.
castillo's head was bangin' back n' forth without defense, it seems like for a second or two, in that particular scene, he was already unconscious and further concussions can be career-ending, the least
A standing 8 count would of made no difference in the stoppage. Castillo was out on his feet, his eyes were going to the back of his head, his body was limp, he was not punching back, he was not defending himself and "both of his hands were down to his side". The ref made the correct call, anyone who thinks otherwise must have wanted Castillo to get killed.
Once Castillo's head flew back and both of his hands fell to his side, the ref stopped the fight before Corrales could of landed another flush power filled blow to a fighter who would was so hurt that he could not even keep his hands up or move away from the shot.
Absolutely correct Rick, and may I add that it was the single best finish to a fight that I have ever seen! Talk about a "Rocky" movie in real life - WOW - INCREDIBLE FIGHT!! Bravo Corrales & Castillo !!

I dont think it was in effect, but i believe what most people are referring to in regards to this fight is if u get knocked back and the ropes hold u up u score it a KD and do the count because he would have gone down had the ropes not been there.
As opposed to the standing 8 count which is when u get stunned on ur feet u get counted no matter if it was in the center of the ring and u didnt go down.
interesting
i can see most other people thnkin that
but my bro n dad just strait up think he shoulda got an standing 8 count
nothin bout the ropes
but ill make sure not to mention the other stuff ya said
