I'm sure you all heard about Roy Jones Jr. vs. Bernard Hopkins II what ended up falling apart, because they couldn't agree on certain things. I don't know the whole story behind that, but I read that one of the problems was the money. Hopkins felt that the purse should be split 50/50, I think Roy wanted it like 65/35 (not sure..) but anyway, what do you all think it should've been? Do you think Roy was right because he already beat Hopkins, or do you think Hopkins was right that it should be 50/50 since that fight with Roy Jones was years ago, and he's proven himself to be a potentially better (in different ways) opponent than the Bernard Hopkins Roy Jones fought in their first meeting
Does that happen a lot? Where the purse of each fighter depends on the outcome of the fight?
I don't think so. But it would add interest to the fight in addition to settling the money dispute...
How hard is it to write up a contract where the WINNER takes 60 and the LOSER takes 40?

Roy said "60/40 and you get your ass whupped". No, Bhop didn't deserve an even split after losing the first one. He lost, he shouldn't start making demands on the purse cut. Zab knew that and he took a 150K purse to get the rematch. but bernard always tried to be the shrewed business man.
At that time Roy was the one putting asses in the seats, he won there previous fight together and hopkins only big win was over tito. Hopkins should have been graceful that roy even offered him a 60/40 purse.
Yea definately. Hopkins should have graceful that Roy even offered a 60-40 split. It should have been more of a 70-30. In an interview, I read somewhere that Roy believed Hopkins was scared to fight him because he didn't want to take that 60-40, and that would have been the most money Hopkins made at that point. It wasnt definately a money issue for Hopkins because the next couple of fights after he rejected Roy's offer, he made substantially much less than what the 60-40 was intended to be.
i believe bernard priced himself out. roy gave him the oppurtunity to recieve more money than he had ever recieved in his entire career (only to be eclipsed by his DLH fight more than 5 years later)...i remember that interview with merchant, bernard, and roy
BH:'larry, i want the two best p4p fighters to come at a catch weight...'
RJJ:'i'm the champion, my terms are 60/40'
BH:'then what am i?!! if you the champ, what am i?!'
RJJ:'well then 60/40 will get yo ass split...'
BH:'...he don't wanna fight larry...'
RJJ:'...60/40 i'll kick yo ass!!..'
BH: 'he don't wanna fight larry....'
that was funny. make no mistake these guys are friends and acknowledge each other at every boxing event.

Bernard isn't shit. He couldn't command 50-50 with a superior fighter like Ruiz. With Roy Jones he might get 15% and some coupons to KFC.
Your joking right?
There comes a point where it is better to take 35% or whatever it was of $15,000,000 which is about $5,000,000 rather than the 80-90% he took against Hakkar which had a purse of about $600,000.
Fighters that want the fights that bad take the short money. Like Judah vs Spinks.
Fighters that don't want to take short money in the biggest fights of their lives are scared. Examples being JMM after his fight with Pac.
Roy wanted a 60-40 split, but Hopkins wanted it to be 50-50. Even though Hopkins is a great fighter, and at that time, he came out just beating Tito, Roy definately deserved a bigger purse. Roy was considered #1 P4P, and that alone should be a reason to get a bigger purse, addition to the fact that he already beated Hopkins. So I thought that 60-40 was definately fair.
jones deserved the greater purse because 1) he had already defeated hopkins 2) jones had the bigger name and 3) hopkins may have priced himself out of the rematch, like he is doing to taylor. imo its an attempt at making himself look better in history, so he could tell himself at least he tried to fight big time guys but the fight fell thru
Hopkins, at that point, barely deserved a 70/30 split, because Jones was the top p4p fighter and Hopkins only had 1 significant win vs. Tito, Roy woulda been the guy to put the butts in the seats and it would have been for his lt. heavyweight championship, B-Hop was too stubborn to take the short $ but i guess in the end it worked out for him with the $15mil+ he got for the Oscar sparring match
