I have watched a few fights in HD but have wondered why Showtime and HBO only broadcast the 'championship' fights in HD. Cost maybe? Will Boxing after Dark or Showbox join the HD ranks soon?
Yeah, I Noticed that also.
I have noticed that in the HBO HD broadcasts, there is some pixelation, and the picture quality is clear, but not as clear as lets say HDNet boxing etc. I am not sure if the problem is the HBO HD feed or the Directtv feed.
Showtime HD boxing is the best picture quality I have ever seen. Just awesome.
Switching from replays to boxer's corner, I seen alot of pixelation. Also, I have Dish, so it wasn't just DirectTv's feed..lol. I have to agree also about Showtime HD....can't wait for the Kostya Tszyu on there in HD.

I was kinda worried last night when the screen flashed and the fight was then being broadcasted with those black bars on the side...lol. Luckily the HD broadcast came right back.
You are correct, you can record a HD program, but it first must be downconverted to 480i resolution.
Even with the Downconvert, the picture quality is the best quality you can get on a DVD.
Once the HD-DVD come out, we will be able to record in true HD.
Until then, I am using a upgraded HDTivo with 2 300 gig harddrives, which allows for 74 hours of HD.
Trust me, you are not recording in HD. It may be component inputs, but the format is still 480i not 1080i.
Let me explain.
A commercial DVD is Dual Layered, and can hold about 9-11 gigs worth of video data. A comercial DVD is 720x480 resolution, and the video bitrate is about 7-9megbits per sec.
A Single layered DVD-R can hold about 4.7 gigs, and a dual Layered about 9 gig.
There is no Standalone DVD recorder that can burn dual Layered, therefore you are Burning onto single layered DVD-R 4.7 gig discs.
With that being said, A true HD program is recorded in 720p, or 1080i. , and the video bitrate average about 15megbits per sec.
Therefore even if your DVD recorded could burn HD resolution, the video bit rate would eat up a 4.7gig disc in 30 minutes.
The Technology is not available for purchase. There is a war with the Blue-Ray format, and HD-DVD format. They are to be released in the end of this year.

Price Tag on these puppies is $1000.
It records from the source which is HD, which looks awesome. The quality doesnt degrade and fits perfectly on the disc with no troubles. Recording from an HD source is going to get you better quality than recording from a composite or coaxial source...Not many players have component inputs to begin with so it is a bargain.

Anything in HD I believe is good, though I"ve never seen HD in person, I've seen HD on TV threw other TVs, lol, but I"ve never gotten the feel of HD, must be awsome.
Why? all Lite-on reviews are good..
Personal experience have turned me away...They make good PC Products but I tried a lite-on dvd record as well did my g/f's grandfather and they were both junk literally and broke down.
Usually I wont judge a product if I just didnt flat out like it because people have their preferences but the 2 I had experience with just broke down mechanically.
Dont buy Lite-on
In ANY advertisement about the mrv640 it never mentions the support of Component inputs. But it is in BOLD print on the box, I was surprised and happy because I knew I got my moneys worth then.
It gets decent reviews but it is really underrated, I havent had ANY flaws with it and infact I threw out my VCR because this was so much better.
It is a Magnavox model, I picked it up for $250 on sale a short while back although I have seen it on sale for about $150 now.
It's got all the tools I need and with hd component inputs you cant complain *woop woop* :)
Magnavox MRV640 is the model

I went HD last year because I could tell the quality of the Standard defination on some HBO broadcasts looked soft. I am using using Direttv.
I am big into picture quality, and I record all my fights in the best quality, I want the original source to be excellent as well.
I have 52' Toshiba DLP TV,and a HDTivo. Along with the Directtv HD package. When the fights come out in HD, its simply amazing.
When I transfer the video to DVD, I need to downconvert from 1080i to 480i, but the quality of the video is the best you can get from a DVD. So its as clear as a store bought DVD, and better than the video thats shown on the Standard defination channel.
Now HD is not all the same. Some companies compress the HD channels, and therefore the video quality is not as crisp. Since most people do not understand HD, or even what good or bad video quality is, or would rather sacrifice video quality for more channels.

My dvd recorder I recently purchased records in HD format, it is sweet as hell.
I have Dish Network HD pack and a 65' Mits. I agree with vizcaya about not all HD being the same. I love the quality of most live broadcasted HD programs. I would love to see Showbox and Boxing after Dark broadcast in 'true' HD also.

It only makes a difference if it is truly shot in High Def with a HD Cam to begin with otherwise NO. When HBO shows movies and you watch it on the HD channel their is no significant difference and looks about the same as watching a DVD maybe less depending on the age of the film.
I have seen HBO Boxing that was supposedly broadcasted in HD and it didnt look that much more significant than just watching it through component (edtv)
But TRUE HD HOT DAMN it looks great.
