The Nevada Board declined to lift boxer Joe Mesi's medical suspension today : http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/20050418-1725-nv-box-mesi-hearing.html
To me it is kinda sad b/c he is one of my favorite fighters and would have liked to see him come back if he was cleared. But again if he is seriously injured it is best he retire. I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope he is cleared.
I hope he is well enough to keep on fighting. I am a huge Mesi fan, and would love to see him in the ring a few more times. Baby Joe has got alot of heart and will, a true professional, who also happens to be a great guy.
But he hasn´t fought in a long time and is pushing 32, so if he is ever to be a contender again, the comission better be quick about it.
This may sound heartless, but I think Mesi and his greedy father got EXACTLY what they deserved, they took the Gerry Cooney route, by fighting guys with a name-rep but with no chance at beating Baby Joe, expecting to get millions for a title fight where Joe would get creamed, rather than climbing the ladder vs. stiff cometition (and no Monte Barrett is not a competitive heavyweight)....when you take the path of least resistance for years, you're gonna get knocked off track unexpectedly, and that's what happened....
by the way, the punch to the back of Joe's head by Jirov was NOT illegal, the two were facing each other, Joe pivoted, Jirov threw a wide hook, and it caught Joe in the back of the head, that's perfectly legal (See the KD in Bowe-Holyfield 1, round 11, for further proof)
Actually, I think Joe and father got a lot more than they deserved, and in fact, everything they could possibly have hoped for. By putting Joe in with powderpuffs they got a 30 fight career instead of a 15 fight one, and a lot more fame and $ to boot. With Baby Joe’s predisposition to subdural hematoma, the first big head shot he took would be the beginning of the end for him. I think he was darn lucky to get as far as he did, and if he has any brains left at all, he’ll thank his lucky stars the commission has made his retirement decision for him and move on.
he destroyed jirov for 8 rounds, jirov hit him with a haymaker to the back of the head, completely illegal punch, also a fluke punch, mesi took hits from far bigger guys and was fine. it wasnt that he cant take a punch, its bad luck

Fair enough, call it bad luck then. And what should we call it when, say, Wlad Klit lands a fluke punch to the back of his head? Involuntary manslaughter or assisted suicide? ;)
Forget about Mesi, maybe this was an awakening call for him. As the article said, they are worried about a stronger heavyweight hitting him because Jirov doesn't hit nearly as hard. Mesi's streak wasn't going to go much further. I remember Mesi before the Jirov fight, he called Jirov an blown up cruiserweight and should go back down to cruiserweight where he belongs because he couldn't hold his own with the heavyweights. My my, how some things come back to bite you in the ass.
I expect him to be fighting overseas in the future. If he does well, he'll probably get his license back in the US. Boxing comissions are funny that way....when they see a fighter who's a big draw, they suddenly don't care as much about his health as they did when he was just up and coming. Of course I don't think money has anything at all to do with that.
