Johnny Tapia

Johnny Tapia, if you do not know, is one of the greatest fighters of all time. Forget the idea that some may call him a mere "legend". Those people are not true fans of the sport IMO, and he proved skeptics wrong time, and time again. Here is a link to an interview he did a few years back, where he discusses some issues in/out of the ring. In the video, he mentions how he would "hang em up" if he was taking a severe beating in the ring. This would personally, be the most disgusting thing for me to see in professional sports as a whole. He fought, yesterday against a fighter named Frankie Archuleta whom he beat decisevly in a 10 round fight. I saw him fight at the Dodge Arena in Hidalgo TX, which is about 10 miles from my house, against Nicky Bentz, who is a native of Reynosa Mexico. It seems as though he is placing himself in a spot to have a shot at a decent title. I do not like this. He is not the Johnny of old, and might get "the beating" that he described as being career ending. Please edumacate yourselves people, especially as to this man in general. I would pull for him to beat anyone he faces. anyone. What are your thoughts on Tapia's continuing career, as well as the memorable battles he has fought IN AND OUT OF THE RING in the past? I would have loved to see him and gatti face each other Yeah. That fight would be a murder though, If Johnny was in the same weight class. He would kill Gatti every round, and make him look sillier than he does on his own. The difference in skill level is so much in favor of Tapia. Gatti slows down when he gets hit, Johnny speeds up like a racehorse. Editing and adding. Of Johnny's 4 losses as a professional: 2 were robberies against Ayala. He won them decisevly IMO. 1 was avenged last friday against Archuleta That leaves 1 loss to Barrera who was in his prime.....and Johnny was well out. That is some serious shit. One of the reasons Tapia was so successful was his jab. The man had a seriously strong jab for his weight, if you'll notice. He sorta pushes all his weight into it, but not like George, George steps into it, Tapia sorta shifts his waist into it a bit more, while George just steps up and puts everything into it via one step. of course tapia was successful. with a jab like he had, which is the foundation of most fights, no wonder he was so damn good. ;p I bet he had some unorthodox jab training methods, maybe he'd put both wrist weights on his jab hand and throw it until muscular fatigue, then jump in the water and shadowbox underwater/jab underwater. I know for a fact he incorporates underwater shadowboxing in his training. it's a trait the greats share; hagler and now tapia for sure did that. of course it's beneficial, i'm glad i do it.

JT deserves to get one or two more good paydays, and then retire with a belt. That would be the idea solution. Think about it this way. What if he does beat Larios. For one, that would be another ridiculous achievement of his, right after avenging his loss to Archuleta. I think the super-bantamweight belt is damn good enough for him to retire with, but then again....he never seems to quit fighting. I really have mixed feelings about this whole situation. I dont want to see him damaged in the ring, but I also want him to continue fighting. 1.) The not getting hurt part outweighs his continuing in the fight game IMO. I dont think Larios can crack hard enough to give him a beating that would send him into retirement. If he were to face a devistating puncher like Rafael Marquez, or Manny Pacquiao......he would might recieve the worst beating of all time, thus sending him into retirement. Although.....I dont think they would knock him out like many others who will respond will say. He would take them the distance. He has never been knocked out, and I dont think that will happen. 2.) The two belts that he could possibly attain: and would be Ideal, WBC belt from Larios (superbantamweight), and the WBO featherweight title from Scott Harrison. He has had a tough life, a crazy life (hence the tattoo on his torso "Mi Vida Loca") since he was a young man. His mother was abducted, raped, hung and stabbed with an ice pick when he was eight. He was in a bus accident when he was seven. He has succumbed to many addictions which resulted in a three year ban from boxing because of cocaine. He has been set straight several times by his amazing and tough wife Teresa, who he once pulled a gun on. just to add to the "grim" reality my boy has faced. Nothing holds this mutha down. NOTHING. He is the greatest fighter of all time under 140, and will prove it day, after day, after day, after day, after fucking day. Great in a way that other fighters could not be. i was watching a interiew with him and they showed him in the ring,when this guy threw a jab, jhon did a little loop and pull thing with the other guys arm and hit him with a right. i couldnt believe my eyes, i had never seen anything like that before.

the best counter puncher of all time You would not get an arguement from me in regards to that. Do you remember/ have you seen the: Jorge Elicier Julio fight? Julio was on a roll, and faced the deadliest, fastest, counterpuncher he could possibly face. If he was 5-10 years younger, people would be saying "M.A.B. Who?" or "J.M.M. Who?". Both fighters could not hold the man's jock as far as I am concerned. He would counterpunch/knock them out with relative ease in his prime. He holds his hands low.....like a cholo. And goes in leaned back, throwing slick over the top counterpunches. He perfected that, in his prime, and was fun/exciting to watch him fight bums. He would blow them out of the water with accurate precision. He would have SO kicked Hamed's ass if they ever fought. He would counter him to death, and there would be no weapon in Nazeem's arsenal that could stop the warrior. While we are at it.......What about his heart, and chin? Larios was supposed to fight here in El Paso last weekend on the Barrera card but he had to cancel due to a hand /arm injury, this is going to be a factor on Larios next fight.

, it’s a fight he can definitely win. If he were to hypothetically beat Larios, I would go fugging crazy cheering. No doubt. He has a chance, but Larios would be the toughest test of his career: for this reason. Larios will not give up, much like Johnny will not. Johnny is old now, and may not have the reflexes to escape Oscar's lead hooks. I am still not sure about this one though, and it would be really nice if he were to prove skeptics wrong, (including myself). Johnny has been to prison in between world titles and is probably relaxing doing drugs right now. When is time to get serious about the job, he gets really serious. When is time to play and party, he parties to the hilt. If he gets a title shot against Larios, he will not have the reach disadvantage he had last night, it’s a fight he can definitely win.

new mexico boxing That could happen as soon as July 2nd, against WBC Super Bantamweight champion Oscar Larios, here in Albuquerque. I have begun to only dream of this fight, and what the outcome could be. Oh man, this is awesome. Great post round 1. Ill send you some karma and 100k. try not to attempt to murder his wife anymore. She beats on him though dude. Really bad. He was talking about "getting hit" by her in the interview. LOL. He is whipped no doubt. Like Chris Rock says: "If you havent planned out the murder yet......you havent been in love. If you havent been standing over her with a knife......you havent been in love" As for the "drugs" thing. That is one of the reasons I like him so much. Overcoming so much adversity, its not even funny. Having your family die on you like that, will give plenty of people drug problems.
