now that the crusier limit is 200 pounds will all these small heavys who wiegh only like 215 pounds will just drop cause they know they have no chance? id liek to see all fo em at crusier with mormeck, braithwright, oneil. cause then byrd could drop down, and jirov, moorer, and anyone else. i have a feeling the cruiserweight divsion is about to get some talent worth watching :p
don't forget about people moving up into it like tarver. does anyone know whats up with jirov since his loss to moorer??
Jirov has a fight against a guy called Forrest Neal this weekend - it's a rebuilding fight for him (I think the guy is 16 - 5 or something)
I don't know how much effect increasing the weight limit is going to do for the cruiserwieght division. Long term it could increase the depth of the division - but the heavyweight division is that much more lucrative for a successful fighter that it will always entice fighters to leave cruiser and move up. I don't think this is the era of the giants at heavyweight that some people seem to think it is - they have speed and stamina issues that can really hurt them coming up against the smaller guys (just look at W Klitschko or Byrd - McCline). Byrd is never going back down - he made a conscious decision to train his body into a heavyweight form because of the prizes at heavyweight.
My boxing buddies and I were talking about this tonight too. Yep, the 200 pound limit is going to be great for a previously mostly unknown division. The division should fill out fairly quickly, and may, in the next few years, become as exciting as hell. If we're lucky, in 5 years, the cruisers will be making as much money as the heavyweights. If you think about it, these guys hit nearly as hard, and throw a helluva lot more punches, and for more rounds. In fact, Byrd could possibly get down to 200 and fight at cruiser. He fought at 211 against GOlotta just a year ago, and was only 215 for his last fight against McCline, I think.
Not only that, I think Mormeck will do a great deal for it too. I can't think of another fighter I've seen in the last 10 years that made such a sudden impression on me the way he did. I hate to get overly excited about someone I've only seen once, but the guy's cut from the same cloth as Holyfield, I swear he is. He's not as polished as Evander, but he's not that far from it. To do what he did to Braithwaite takes serious talent and skill. No shame in Wayne losing to someone like that at all.
Marciano was 191 he would have had a chance against Klistchko or McCline or Golota. The smaller guys like Marciano, Tyson, Holy field have the advantage of speed and stamina over the big guys. Plus in alot of cases they have better balance.
I have always liked the cruiserweight divison, because in it they hit like heavyweights but are faster and have a higher punch output. I hope your prediction is true that alot of guys currently at heavy like Moore Byrd and others, maybe Toney come back to cruiser and make it a premier division. I just like the weights in this divison 175 to 200 pounds that is perfect fighting weight for alot of guys. If this division becomes really good it might also draw some of the premier Lt Heavyweights to it.
Marciano weighed in at 191 against Archie Moore. ( his last fight)
