boxing today is not as popular anymore. not too many people boxing because not too many can afford to watch it and keep up with it, and therefore because they dont have the true appreciation for it...they dont' box. every now and then people will buy a punching bag thinknig they know what to do but not much else.
Renaldo Snipes would probably be the larry holmes of the year2005 if he was coming uo now. That man had a good jab. I'm not saying that snipes was great, its more I am saying this crop of heavies is not.......Rockin'
If Snipes had fought Holmes in '83 ro '84, he would have been champ.
Yeah nobody mentioned the 90's heavyweights it was today's heavyweights, Klitschko, Brewster, Rahman etc. we were comparing with the 80's & talent wise you have to give the 80's guys the edge, Holmes, Witherspoon, Tucker, Douglas, Weaver, Page, Tillis, Dokes, Williams. That's a pretty good line up right there.
A guy like Rahman would have fitted into the 80's nicely coz you know if he turns up in good nick & motivated then he'll be a hard night for anybody but he's very inconsistent just like those guys.
I'd probably choose the 80s compared with today's crop. Generally, there was a sounder knowldge of the fundamentals; however, on a head-to-head matchup, you would have some pretty exciting fights and its a lot closer...
The 80''s had Larry holmes and ummmm Gerry Cooney
The 90's had Tyson, Bowe, Holyfield, Lewis, George Foreman, and Larry Holmes.
I guess I got to go with the 90's on this one.
me too! i think the 80's belongs to the middleweight/welterweight division
The 80's was also exciting. Aside from Holmes, Cooney and Spinks, we had Greg Page, Mike Weaver, Tim Witherspoon, Gerrie Cotzee, Michael Dokes, James "Quick" Tillis. The other contenders were also good - Carl Williams, Tommy Morrison, Tony Tucker. :boxing:

I think you have to break up Tyson's career in halves, 80's Tyson and 90's Tyson. How would you rate the 2 against each other now?

Size matters, and size is something they just didn't have.
true, but lennox lewis have change the heavyweight size for4. a future monster like mike tyson would be big like lennox lewis.
I'm in the process of watching the Tony Tucker/Buster Douglas fight from '87' & both of those guys were very good talented boxers actually most of the 80's guys were pretty good just lazy as fuck, you had Tim Witherspoon as well who was a class act & Tony Tubbs was quite slick for a guy his build so they were all good fighters but just seemed to lack in self discipline plus most of them were into the coke at the time too.
