Do you approve of Don king as a promoter?
I voted Option 2. I do not support him. but look at what he does:
He Sells Fights.

The sport was huge well before King entered the scene and it will thrive after he is gone. King has been a blck eye for the sport if anything.
Jean Marc Mormeck would be unknown, to a level greater than he is now, if it were not for King. Don is a publicist. He has built his reputation on promoting big fights to the public, which few people outside of boxing would be interested in seeing. I can understand how you think this, because it is obvious that you know boxing. Otherwise, you would not be on the forums dealing out your opinions as to fights and fighters. King acts as a representative for up and coming fighters, gives fighters a spot in the media, and basically acts as a Mediator/Authority in boxing.
There were times where I was a little disgusted by him. Namely his B.S. parade to give Tyson the title back when he got KTFO by Douglas. Douglas was simply the better fighter that night, and King could not accept that because his "golden boy"'s aura of invincibility left temporarily. With the advent of King promotional schemes in the future:
Look where Tyson is now. If you say Tyson would be who he is without King, I would say "no". He would have been another devistating puncher like Lacy is now, or any other "hard-hitting" up and comer. King marketed him by setting up taylor made opponents and cab drivers for Tyson to whale away on. I never bought into this certain line of King Promotion, but oh well. He has done WORLDS over for heavyweight boxing...which is the only weight class the majority of the public could care less about. Don King is the biggest and baddest promoter, who promotes the biggest and baddest fighters.
Look at it from another viewpoint: We need promoters....No? If we do, who should suit that purpose better.....Arum? DLH? Goosen? ppppppfffffff! 3 whackjobs who ride Don's coattails and ask him: "If everything is going to be alright, as far as the contract goes". And in general, most notable fights of the century were promoted by Don King. Just look at his resume. And like I have said before, Africa would have no clue who "Big George" was if it were not for him.
Riddick Bowe was fortunate to have Rock Newman as his promoter/trainer. He "Marketed" Bowe to Africa, which King did for Foreman in the 70's. And I have heard some scandalous things about Newman, especially him "ripping" Bowe off. He does not seem to recieve the blunt of the trauma for that. King gets a bad reputation for paying some of these mongoloids exactly what they have earned: "Hundreds of Thousands of Dollars".

How can anyone say "Boxing would not be here without him" refering to Don King?

I have always hated Don for so many shady things he has "allegedly" done in the sport. Yet after the bout tonight I was actually quite amused at something that he did, I saw it coming the whole time but really was still caught off guard when he did it, and when I saw the look on Farhoods face, I just about pissed myself laughing. In case you didn't catch it, after Farhood talked to both fighters he called Don King over in front of the camera to get his thoughts on something or someshit, anyways DK started talking about how good it was to be back on Showtime and then said how the fights so far this year have been great on Showtime, Then he said how many more great bouts lie ahead down the road. Then he did it, he actually said into the SHOWTIME camera for everybody not to forget about Ruiz vs. Toney at the end of this month! Farhood looked like he shit all down his pants, truely a classic moment, Oh in case you all forgot the Ruiz vs Toney bout is on HBO not Showtime!!!!
Nothing like advertising upcoming programs for the Rivals Network!
Another positive contribution by Don King, In resurrecting the Cruiserweight title: And giving Jean Marc Mormeck a spot in the limelight. He hired a "advisor" who was bilingual to service Mormeck. I would not doubt he hired others to service him in other ways. If you know what I mean.
God I love Don King. Sheer Publicism at its best.

Don is the greatest of all time
Leonard-Duran
Chavez-Taylor
Holyfield-Tyson
Whitaker-Chavez
Thrilla in Manila
Rumble in the Jungle
if that's not an awesome resume, I don't know what is
absolutely. as corny as it sounds:
he had a "vision", to market these fights.
Africa had no idea who Big George was, before him.

Say what u want about King. He does what he does better than any other. They all cheat, and lie, and swindle(manipulate,steal,etc...) but King is best at it and has the most pull doing it. Plus he's entertaining.
I sort of like Don King because he is so damn charismatic, but mostly I hate him. I don't want him in boxing. I am totally against all promoters, yes even Sugar Ray Leonard. That's not to say Leonard was bad or corrupt, but I think the way boxing is set up is all wrong anyhow.
King certainly has helped boxing, but that doesn't justify his practices. He rips off these poor boxers, sucks them dry, and leaves them for dead. He is the most elusive promoter and definitely the most intelligent.
Don't let the Bob Arums and Lou DiBellas of the world fool you. They are just as bad as Don King. Actually they're arguably worse. King will keep fighters even after it seems every last penny has been squeezed from them. How else could you justify King holding onto John Ruiz and Terry Norris?
The FBI has all the major promoters in trouble, except Don King. The US Government 0 for X amount of attempts to get Don King for shady boxing practices. They have Arum and Kushner both on tape admitting to bribery. King never admitted a damn thing and he beat all charges.
Promoters, match makers, etc are the roots of the problems with boxing though, and I just cannot like any of them. I have more trust in fighters who turn promotors than others because the fighters know what it is like and empathize with fellow fighters, in theory at least.
The two biggest problems in boxing are promoters and sanctioning bodies. Get rid of both at the same time, get a boxing league going similar to an NBA or MLB and we'll have a huge start in the right direction.
Nice post. This is exactly what boxing needs but seemingly will never have. It would take an act of Congress or God to change this terrible system. But a league run like the other major sports or at least a hybrid would be a huge boon to boxing.
To each his own. Just make sure you at least dislike Fidel for me.
He is a fascist jackoff. I am not that shallow man.

That made perfect sense. Excellent post.
I still am in favor of him promoting fights. Maybe not necessarily managing the financial packages.

How's that for a comparison? I'm a little tired. If I rambled or didn't make sense, sue me.

Boxing existed and was extremely popular before Don King. Had he never stepped into the game I don't think the sport would be any worse. I think it would be much better. I know he made a lot of great fights happen, but he wasn't the one who made the boxers he pitted (and unfortunately still does) against each other great, he just put the money up and got them to sign on the dotted line. Is there skill to that? Yes. Could someone else with more scruples (doesn't have to have a ton of scruples just not as bad as DK) done the same thing? Absolutely. I think Don King aspires to be like Fidel Castro. He wants to keep a stranglehold over the entire world of boxing. And like Castro he has been very good at it. I hate Castro (I'm Cuban-American, it's my right) but I would never say he was stupid or incompetent just a domineering, narcissitic, crook who gets off on controling others. Don King and Cuba would be better off without them.

No, fighters sell fights...King just steals most of the money they make from them.
who promotes fights?
are you saying fights need no promotion?
Because I am from South Texas. If there was no "Don King". We would not know about many of the fighters:
nor be given the CHANCE to see them unless traveled 1500 miles, Or read about it in the damn newspaper.
Mind you. It is backwards where I come from. We rednecks like to sit on the television set outside, and drink beer.

Don King just sets up the fights he wants to benifit his fighters. The dude is just a crook who tries to control all of boxing like it was his personal invention.
