I just read the interview on boxingtalk.net. Apparently Don King promised him more money that any heavyweight ever received for a heavyweight fight. When he heard $1.5 million it was obvious to him that this is not the most a heavyweight contender ever got for a title shot. What a chump. This is the worst excuse I have ever heard. What did Williams get for his fight against Klichko, $300k ?
This is crap,
Rahman as a human does not have many skill sets that can make him 1.5 mil. What he has is the fact that he is a decent boxer. However, he is not Tyson who can make $1 mil masterbating in MSG, he has to take the fights that will pay him, and he was not getting paid that kind of money to fight Meehan, or Ice Cole the guy he fought before.
Rahman is one man, and this is his last chance to make a fight like this happen. When he retires, there will be mention of the fact that he KOed Lewis on Lewis' worst night as a pro, but you can't look at that in your bank account. He should take the money, be a 8-1 dog and hopefully give VK more of a test than the last 3 guys that VK has faced so he can possibly earn himself another couple of $500K paydays.
Rahman would be a fool not to fight Klitschko, even if he doesn't get the $ he's looking for. He's not getting any younger - if he wants to be heavyweight champ I'd say that now is his chance. Fight Klitschko and try to tag him with a lucky punch (like he did to Lewis a few years ago).
What else is he going to do - go fight John Ruiz again?
Don King likes promoting even to his own fighters.Rock should settle for 1.5-2.0 Million and be happy to have this chance again.Take a page from Judah ,and just and take the belt from him, and then you can be in the driving seat as far as fight money is concerned in later fights.
you just cant talk crap and call somebody a "robot" and say that you're going to KO them and then turn down an offer for more money then you'd get to fight anyone else... thats just bein a bitch
I can see those boxers who view it that way begging in the streets talking about how much respect they deserve because they "used to be HW champ of the world"
I used to be 18 years old with a youngsters virility, but hey, now i'm growing towards being an old fart... that's reality.
He was the champ (for a while) so there is no big motivation for him as for those who never been (I gues Golota would dye to take this oportunity for anything over 500 K$).
You are right about everything but there is something you have to consider - Rahman KNOWS he can't win this fight and he KNOWS that he will be considered a nobody after that. He is just trying to increase the pay because he knows that he will go right back to his usual 100-200K payday after this fight.
exactly...
if you really felt you could be the champ of the world, wouldn't you take the opportunity even if you had to pay for it yourself?
This is a chance for him to become champion (again) then he can call all the shots. It would be nice if they went back to purse fights, so much for the winner and so much for the loser. That would force the fighters to work harder for the big paycheck. Camacho vs. Lenard was such a big joke, lenard still got paid big bucks and ripped off the fans. These guys are getting so greedy! They are going down the same road as Hockey! Earn your way to the top, this is a game of "king of the hill" If you want to be king, then money shouldn't be a factor. If you think you can take out the king, then money shouldn't be a factor. If it was against Ruiz or Byrd, I could see more of an arguement. They could attempt to claim the throne, but this isn't. It is against a guy that is a FORMER champ. He shouldn't call any shots. He (Rahman) is in no position. This isn't a fight that the fans are screaming for, it is one that they would like to see.
Why would he say that to him in the first place? Why pay Rahman more than ANY heavyweight has ever received for a heavyweight fight for this heavyweight fight? I don't see it being THAT good of a fight. It could be but it is not a guarantee in my mind. The best heavyweight fight that is possible is Lewis returning and fighting Klitschko. I even think a fight between Klitschko and Byrd would be a bigger fight. The Don, if he did actually say this was just trying to butter him up and he should know that. $1.5 million sounds way fair for a title fight. HE should take the fight even if they offered him $300,000.00. It would re-make his carreer if he could beat Klitschko and give him huge money down the line. What is it with fighters being so short sighted! First JMM doesn't take the rematch with Pac Man, then Mayweather turns down a fight that will garner him a wider audience as he (most likely, and I'm a Gatti fan) beats Gatti fairly easily and now Rahman doesn't want to take his title fight for $1.5 million? Everyone should follow Zab's example. I didn't like him much before but he earned a ton of respect from me for taking crap money AND fighting in Corey's backyard.
DAMN these people and their short sighted, money grubbing ways. Just make the fights and put on good shows and the money will come. This is one of the reasons boxing is such a nice sport. All this wrangling makes it petty. In baseball, basketball, all major team sports that have leagues and such, they take care of their contracts and then go to work. (except for NHL ;) ) I know boxing is not a game but it should be treated with a level of professionalism and long term vision. I know the career of a boxer can be ended in one night but if you think that it will. It will. You have to believe that this is just one fight on the way to bigger things.
Sorry for the rant. I just really get pissed at all the fights that could get made and don't. And the fact that this sport is so correctly maligned for being corrupt, money hungry, and incompetently run.

This is getting old. Fighter calling out the champ like he's in a motivational speaker convention, but when they finally get it, they complain and/or make excuses.
1.5 million dollars is fair enough. Especially in his position.
. What a chump. This is the worst excuse I have ever heard. What did Williams get for his fight against Klichko, $300k ?
Deservedly so.
Williams is not a former HEAVY WEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD.
unlike Hasim Rahman.

Byrd stole all his excuses which include:
1. Vitali as a champ is eager for travel to NY to face Rhaman - a truly "deserving" contender.
2. VK's unkle and anunt denied the proposition to judge the fight because they are too old to travel over sea (that is very unfortunate because they would be still the most objective around).
3. There is no one cook in NY who know anything about Ukrainian food,
so there is no possibility to tell that VK was poisoned by his own food.
4. Due to a very increased US airport security it is impossible to smuggle famous Klitchos poisoned glowes for diqualifying him after the fight.
Finaly, the only open point for negotiations is to increase amount of money for Rhaman to be equal to Byrd's regular payday of 2.5 M$.

Apparently its in trouble, but it will definetly happen. What else does Rahman have coming for him?
lol
ya dats why im thinkin
not much options for him
but still is a bitch to hear its in trouble
