Boxing is dominated by either americans and mexicans
out in the limelight, save for pacquiao, are fighters from the far east and the african continent.
why is this so?
Couple things.
1. Thinking that people in 3rd world countries dont box becuase they cant make a living is foolish. Boxing more than any other sport in history has always been dominated by the poor.
2. There are tons of Asain and African fighters. Asains are very well represented in the lower weight classes from about 126 down there is at least 1 Asain champion in each division. However they all fight on the other side of the world and get zero publicity in the States, but that doesn't mean there not there.
Africa has always supplied a steady stream of tough fighters. Nelson, Ike, Ouma...etc.
i agree, talent and determination is abundant in our continent yet opportunities are scarce, and prejudice and oppression adds insult to the injury

dominated by the poor in the US, first of all. Nobody said that no fighters make it out at all, it was just noted that not as many come from those regions as from others and it is true. Yes, there is a fair amount of Asians in the lower division but look at the amount of people who are considered asian, does the amount fighting seem proportionate, no. We are just trying to say that socioeconomic factors other than talent and ability limit the amount of people that make it big in boxing from certain regions. You must admit there are about the same amount of Mexican fighters in the championship range than all of the asian and African fighters, we're just trying to point out that it may have something to do with opportunity not just talent.

people probally used to say that about spanish ppl in the MLB before roberto clemente got there and showed that spanish ppl are just as good as white ppl. a few asians in baseball but not as many as hispanics. any not relevant to boxing but does have to do with the race topic we have goin here
There are a few Asian and African fighters worth mentioning:
Kassim Ouma
Kofi Jantuah
Kostya Tszyu
Pacman

Because america is a superpower, the reason for this is the people in the country are strong and determained. People in asia and mexico are weak minded.
You are a real peanut aren't you. Yes america is a super power and most of the money in boxing is generated in the US. US boxers also get the best opportunites to improve and prove themselves because of this. Also US fans want to see US fighters and find it hard to handle when their fighters are beaten by overseas fighters.
To say that people in Asia and Mexico are weak minded is not only racist, but also ignorant (which does not surprise me from a yank). I would love to see you live day to day in the conditions that the people of some of these nations live in and actually be able to survive physically let alone mentally.
Go back to your sheltered little insignificant life and follow George W like the drone that you are, and leave us to talk about the sport we love with intelligent human beings and not Red Neck Hicks like you!

This is the most stupid post I have ever read in Boxingscene.

you should be jailed for your racial prejudice!
i agree with most who had commented on this thread there although there are some champs outside america and mexico, the opportunities are still not there for more aspiring boxers.
In my honest opinion, boxing will be more exciting if new, fresh talents are discovered from other parts of the globe. This will renew worldwide patronage of the sport. I think American promoters should invest more in looking for other possible champions out there.
Who knows a new great boxer is just out there waiting for the right opportunity.
There are probably a lot of great potentials all over the world, but never made it because of lack of recognition because of the economic situation and culture, etc. Heck, even here in the US, there probably had been more known real talents if it weren't for boxing politics.
After Pacquiao made a name for himself here in the US, promoter are now trying to find great potential from the Phillipines.
As the popularity of Manny Pacquiao and Injin Chi grows, I expect more Asian fighters to compete and mix it up with the Mexican-dominated lower weight classes. Chi's fight against Morales showed that Asians can do compete with Latin fighters and now, it's Manny Pacquiao's turn.
This is very similar to what's happening in the NBA right now where we'll be expecting more European and Asian ballplayers to mix it up and compete with this American-dominated sport.
adrsan84 had made the comment about boxers in 3rd world countries not boxing because they would not make much money. Honestly, its the same here. We might make more but it still isnt very much. I had a fight where I was paid $50 a round. I took the guy out pretty brutally so the promoter gave me an extra $50, i was happy to get it. Other fights I made a good deal more than $50 a round but thats how it is. Most guys start out fighting for peanuts. Anywhere you go boxing is a hard place to make it financialy. Most fighters in america have to hold down full time jobs to survive and then go fight, hoping to make it to the money bouts. Its just a tough business to get into...........Rockin'
Not arguing here just wanna reply, first of all i never said third world countries, i don't use that term but thats irrelevent. You say that boxers fight for peanuts here as well but it's not the same. Fighting for peanuts here means having enough to survive but not being able to buy the plasma TV you've always wanted. Fighting for peanuts in other places in the world means your ass is hungry and undernourished at the end of the day, which is how an immense part of the worlds population already is without using their free time to box. Usually in America people can get some kind of support wether it be from a parent or whatever, they dont have that luxury in other less industrialized countries.
I also was always told that people thought asian boxers wouldn't be able to cope with the mexican and *rough* and *tough* stree fighters in the US. I think that mostly goes with the size. If anything there would be many featherweight asian fighters that would come here though they need to be real good. I think this also requires a good management team. Murad Muhammed is trying to bring more asian fighters over(Bautista, Gorres, Penolosa) that have great talent. I think it's a great idea to mix it up abit. It seems like ever since Manny stepped in, asian fighters aren't being taken as lightly any more and that's a great thing!
Whoa there! What's up with the racism. That was very uncalled for man. I probably can't curse in English but I sure can in Spanish and Tagalog. Come mierda, chupa verga, putangna mo, tarando, gago, hijo de puta, maricon, bakla.
Just keep in my mind three languages. Now I can't be that weak minded. Just for the record I'm Asian and been living in Tejas for about 8 years now and that could probably qualify me to be Mexican, cabron.
lol Pinoy and Mexican

that is just prejudice and way off. It's because of the local economy as lol999 says, nothing to do with race. You can't train for boxing if your out tending the fields. A lot of people in "underdeveloped" nations spend their leisure time doing other things that do not require as much physical activity as the rest of their everyday lives. This drastically drops the amount of boxers out of a region and the number of good boxers that come from that region. In other words they may be too busy trying to survive to box. I know in many places they do have boxing and martial arts in these types of settings but those people never have the opportunity to make money from it the way a person in the US might due to the economy. By the way he included Mexico so your bashing mexicans is out of place on this thread. Mexicans make it more often than Asians and Africans just because they are in a slightly more industrial nation and thay are closer to the United States. Industrialized countries like Japan have all their own champs and big boxing things going on but we just don't pay attention to it here cuz we think we're the best and what they are doing isn't as good.
To sum it up it's a mix of culture, economy, and a feeling of superiority, not any traits inherent to any people.
