I was watching Trinidad-Whitaker recently, and I was sad. Whitaker was taking one of the worst beatings ever administered to another legend. Whats worse is that Whitaker was getting beaten up by a guy who he would've handled in his prime. Which fighters do you think simply stayed way past their expiration date? These are my choices:
Pernell Whitaker
Sugar Ray Robinson
Muhammad Ali
Julio Cesar Chavez
Mike Tyson
Terry Norris
Fighters who stayed too long? How 'bout fighters who didn't stay too long. That's a much smaller list since about 80% of fighters fight past their prime, just some worse than others.
Most popular ones obviously: M. Ali, Meldrick Taylor and Rays Robinson and Leonard.
the guys who stay too long are usually the greatest. Look at these names, they're of the guys who were born to be warriors. Ali and everyone else kept fighting because that was the thing he knew how to do and loved. Too bad his body couldn't keep up, but to tell someone like that to quit is too hard, they should make the decision by themselves.
It is a good point you make. What was the quote in "When we were kings".....
Someone said you destroy the thing you love, but the truth is the thing you love destroys you. :(

Archie Moore,Muhammad ali, Holyfield, Roberto duran are the first ones that should have left boxing way earlier than they did. i guess its the pure love of the sport that doesn't let them quit.
I think the warning signs were in the first tarver fight for Jones. It seemed that going up to heavyweight then crashing down to lightheavy at his age fucked him up ( pardon the language ). I will always wonder if Roy had stayed at heavyweight after beating Ruiz would he have been able to maintain a decent performance rate against say an old Holyfield, a Kirk Johnson, Rahman, toney etc...Maybe. But at the time there were no big fights for him after he beat Ruiz.
