'El Terrible' to Tackle 'the Pac Man' on March 19th
Brief Provided by MAXBOXING.com (January 9, 2005)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Various sources have told MaxBoxing that on March 19th Erik Morales will take on Manny Pacquiao on HBO Pay-Per-View.
There had been much speculation as to just who Pacquiao would be fighting next. Many believed that the Filipino superstar would face Juan Manuel Marquez in a highly anticipated rematch on February 26th, but the fight was never finalized contractually.
Many in the industry believe that the Morales-Pacquiao match-up is being made by Top Rank to put Marco Antonio Barrera and Golden Boy Promotions in a bit of a bind. With Morales and Pacquiao facing each other, Barrera finds himself for the time being without a big-name opponent.
Perhaps, Barrera can face Marquez, who once again finds himself on the outside looking in.

you'll be sorry mr. arum, playing with your "pets" like this. boxing world would again take a hell of a shocker when PACMAN knocks EL TERRIBLE in the canvass and his lustruous boxing career would end up "terrible!!!". then you'll end up wrecked!!!
Arum wants to do something good in the beginning of 2005. He could have found out that JMM is running too much in the mountain. Arum does not want to start this year with a MARATHON in the boxing ring.
So Erik will have to start with a real bang. Of course, we all know that Manny only fights in one dimension. The BLOODY DIMENSION. Those holding ringside tickets should bring their umbrellas to avoid getting soak in blood.

whos the better fighter of the 2 on the night.

I figure than JMM wants a bigger purse just in case this will be the last time he holds his belts :D I mean, how much will he be worth without those belts anyway ?
hahaha! tama ka dyan parekoy!
it's obvious: they're taking the money issue as the-issue

additional news:
Manny dumps Marquez for Morales?
The Philippine Star 01/11/2005
With Juan Manuel Marquez insisting on a $1.5 million purse demand for a rematch with Manny Pacquiao, handlers of the Filipino boxing champion has reportedly shifted its sights on Erik Morales for a possible March 19 match on HBO’s pay-per-view.
News of the Pacquiao-Morales fight flooded the various boxing websites yesterday after the highly-anticipated Marquez-Pacquiao rematch hit a snag following the Mexican champion’s demand that he be paid $1.5 million for their Feb. 26 bout.
Greg Leon reported on the BoxingTalk.com that after the Puerto Rican newspaper El Nuevo Dia broke the news of the collapse of the rematch between Pacquiao and Marquez, the Filipino ring icon is now planning to move up to 130 lbs to take on Morales, the former WBC junior lightweight champion who was dethroned by Marco Antonio Barrera in a classic clash last year.
"The usually talkative Murad Muhammad surprisingly had no comment when we spoke to him last night," Leon wrote, referring to Pacquiao’s US-based promoter, adding that Top Rank’s Bob Arum and Todd DuBoef were also unavailable for comment.
Maxboxing.com’s Steve Kim, citing industry sources, said "the match is being made by Top Rank to put Barrera and Golden Boy Promotions in a bind. With Morales and Pacquiao facing each other, Barrera finds himself for the time being without a big-name opponent. Perhaps he can face Marquez, who sees himself on the outside looking in again."
This came about after Murad met with Top Rank bigwigs in Las Vegas last week to firm up the Pacquiao-Marquez Feb. 26 bout. But apparently, both camps were not able to resolve Marquez’s purse demand.
"Bob (Arum) and I are trying to straighten out Marquez’ situation. B]Marquez took the stand that he believes that Pacquiao should not be paid as much as him, or more," Murad told Fightnews.
Pacquiao, who demolished Barrera before the Mexican fans in 2003 then fought Marquez to a controversial split draw last May, is set to receive $900,000 while Marquez will only get $750,000. — Dante Navarro
I looks like the contract Manny signed states that the fight with Morales will give Manny $1.75M. The contract goes like:
$900K for fight with JMM or a substitute acceptable to HBO and
$1.75M for fight with Morales.
hope you are correct on this one bro..
but i'm afraid that they will consider this fight as the 1st of the 2 fights signed by manny..
and morales is a fighter more than aceptable to HBO..
This is good for Pac cuz that'lll give him a couple of more weeks to trains for an even tougher fight in my opinion. It sux cuz he'd still get paid 900K instead of the 1.75 to fight Morales.

i really want to see PAC finish his unsettled business with Marquez first and foremost but a PAC-EM fight would be a very nice fight for us fans ...
I think Pacman-Morales is a lot more appetizing right now than Pac-JMM2. It would be much better if Murad can hook Erik for February. Pac can take care of JMM later.
After Morales, the JMM fight, as the others say, is an "unfinished business", so I would also love Pac to take care of this business once and for all!
Though I like to see a Morales-Pacquiao bout, I would still love too see a rematch between Pac and Marquez. Plus it's better for my schedule because I may depart somewhere in March. So Marquez now, Morales later .
As I said this maybe another Arum ploy to trick murad and beristain or another pre fight brouhaha to spice up pac-jmm 2.
yeah right!!
and i'd rather see the JMM and MP fight
than EM and MP.. even if it's boring..bwaha
