Toney's Promoter Responds To Byrd's Invitation
By G. Leon
January 06, 2005 - After reading Boxingtalk.com's TNT chat transcript with IBF heavyweight champion Chris Byrd, James Toney's promoter Dan Goossen sent us the following statement. "Chris Byrd---If you want to call Don be our guest. You take care of your business and we'll take care of ours. You want James Toney, tell Don and have him call me. I can assure you he does have my number. The question though is, do you really want James Toney? The fans know James will fight anybody, and the last time I spoke to James, you were one of the anybodys. Many have called him out, but few have gone further then talking. Now is not the time to do any more talking---James is ready. If you really are, have a talk with Don and if you two believe you can beat James, in a no strings attached fight, I'll sit by the phone like Mother Goose anxiously awaiting the call from your promoter."
toney needs an injury free 2005. these injuries he keeps getting are a sign he's getting old. however if he stays fit and has a good camp he'll beat byrd, who is'nt the same fighter he was 2-3 years ago. toney is the best fighter in the hw division but i agree he has to start beating the top guys.
I,like many of you, are waiting for Toney to fight a lagit heavey. I really don't know how well he would do. I think a Toney v Rock would be great. Rahman deserves a big fight - and Toney needs to fight a top ten before he gets the prop he is claiming.
toney is gonna get caught if he fights someone good in the heavyweight division. look at who toney has beaten in his last three fights: rydell booker, evander holyfield, and vasily jirov  those guys are nothing in the heavyweight division and none pose any threat to the title holders. toney has done nothing to prove he is a worthy challenger.
If Byrd moves the way he used to, I can't see Toney being able to win convincingly, or at all, for that matter. He's short, doesn't even try to punch hard, isn't that fast compared to Byrd, and may have stamina problems as well. Byrd just may light his ass up and send him back to cruiser.
I do hope Toney gets his chance to prove himself though :)
It must be frustrating to have to wait all this time with injuries and such while the HW division is in such shambles..
I just don't see him owning VK..
but definitely a good matchup with him and Byrd, both very quick and elusive.
I hate to say it, but I think Byrd beats Toney. I'm not blinded by the victory over Holyfield. Toney is very overated. He was a great middle and super middle. He was a great cruiser. I need to see him beat a true Heavy who isn't shot and 40 years old before I jump on his bandwagon. It amazes me how so many people want to hand Toney the torch. Byrd can take a shot and Toney is smaller than Byrd. I have a feeling Byrd would bore us all in route to a decision victory.
Toney has been running his mouth forever, I wish he would just fight someone for crying out loud.
Where is the love for the baddest man on the planet? toney would KO Byrd, Mccline is a 6'8" joke of a heavyweight... he's the tall kid growing up that always wanted to play point guard... he just isn't tough
Toney better fight someone of worth soon. I can see him having trouble finding fights though. He should fight mccline
McCline Fighting Laychkovich in Mar!

I agree Toney has to start fighting the champions if he is going to talk like a champ. I personally believe Toney is the only heavyweight that can clean up this division.
I would pick Toney to win this fight. Other than Vitaly for obvious reasons I think Toney is the only other real threat to Byrd. It would be bad for the division though, other than Byrd I don't see Toney beating any other top heavyweight.
If Toney is willing to fight anyone, then can someone explain to me why he refused to give Mccline a fight after his so called achilles injury? Both Goossen and Toney should win an oscar for their acting skills.
