Davis said that while Pacquiao may be a big draw in the Philippines, he was a disappointment in terms of HBO TV ratings and his last fight against Marquez “rated only 4.5 percent,” which Davis disclosed was below the HBO standard of “no less than 6 percent.”
He said fighters who “fail to get the required ratings on HBO are scheduled on Boxing After Dark” which is regarded as a lower level boxing program where the total purse for both fighters is only some $500,000 to $600,000.
That really sucks. The most entertaining Featherweight and one of most entertaining boxers ever, period, and he's getting called a disappointment? That is really bad to hear. I thought HBO was all giddy for Manny(well as long as he beat Marquez), looks like they aren't. :(
holy crap evo is back!
anyway...yeah pac was not weell known..but is now..so point is..this time around he will get a better rating no matter what...he is exciting (thats true)...

man! you talk like you know nothing about boxing. if you know boxing specially the featherweight division, you will not be calling Pacman, "like any other hes nothing amazing yet?!" if you know boxing, in a single fight you would know if the guy has nothing or has something. but in the case of Pacman, its pretty obvious that anybody who watched him can tell that he is an exciting fighter. i dunno what kinda viewer would not think so...

Manny may not be a household name...but really...in each sport theres maybe a handful of "household names" (i consider it a household name when a person not interested in any sport knows one of its players)...soccer has 1 (beckham) golf 1 (tiger)...NBA...maybe about 5...in boxing right now...MAYBE 2 with Roy Jones and De La Hoya...
To people complaining about low ratings....as a person that works for an advertising agency...all i have to say is promotion=ratings.
what the hbo guy was saying is a thing of the past. manny is more well-known now not only in the u.s. but in the major continents of the world. off course they wouldn't tell you that manny's popularity is on the steady rise, becasue it would out his company at a disadvantage and will give credence to manny's insistence of getting a higher purse.
his comment was therefore to protect hbo's interest (and murad's)
and didn't account of the recent events sourrounding pacman. but this is the fact, pacman is an asset to hbo and that's the reason why they are putting their money on manny. imho, pacman is one of the most exciting fighters at present and perhaps the only truly one who enjoys fighting on top of the ring no matter who the opponent is (within his weight class).

well
i neva called jmm, em , or mab
household names
id say more general boxing fans know them
but not casual boxing fans
what are you planning with your 29M, if your planning to give it away, i am always willing to receive some, he he he...
well
i neva called jmm, em , or mab
household names

but not casual boxing fans
i never said you did...
but its true that MAB & EM are big names in boxing, thats the reason they are getting that much money for their fights
(3M each?)and the way for PAC to be bigger is to beat Erick first, then beat MAB again....
but to do this PAC has to get pass JMM first...
yeah get what you guys mean, but it will take a lot before any figther to be household name say ALI, TYSON, DELAHOYA....
even guys like Morales & Barerra are not household names but big names for boxing fans....
PacMan is very popular to boxing fans now but to get more recognition he should first beat JMM then, EM and re-match MAB ....
well

see rick gets what im sayin
hes known well u filipinos
but hes not yet household
everyoens household

ok now i know your point here...
some good karma for the good post... :D
look at your points

People make a mistake when they think that just because a person is a certian nationality, they know a certain fighter.
I have a filipino family living next door and they barely heard of Pacquiao and have never watched him fight or Boxing for that matter.
I know plenty of Mexicans who know Chavez, they know Trinidad BUT...they have no idea who Morales, Barrera or JMM is.
I know hordes of Russians that never heard of Jirov, Tszyu, Salita or even the Klitschkos.
There is a big difference between a household name outside the U.S. and a household name within the U.S.
You round up all the Filipinos in America, subtract the number of those who know Pacquiao and then subtract the number of those who actually watch him fight. You can now see why the ratings are not as high. Don't get me wrong, the "CASUAL" boxing fan could care less about JMM, Barrera or Morales as well.
It is the "CASUAL" fan that makes a fighter cross over from a general name to hardcore fans like us, to a household name.
Lennox, De La Hoya, Jones, Tyson, Holyfield, Trinidad are known by CASUAL fans, the people that buy a pay per view once a year or watch one televised event a year and that is why these fighters had/have so many pay per view matches and make so much more money.

i am in san francisco..and if ur not asian..know one knows him..i am latino and know him cuz i love boxing..but (blacks-white-and latinos) dont really know him well
no no he isnt
boxing fans know him
thats not a household name
house hold names are guys that people know, even if they dont know a thing about boxing
Amigo, I think we have different meanings for the term "household name". We'll never get to agree on anything using this term. So I'll leave you to your own opinion.
wtf?
howd ya guys arrive at the conclusion that hbo dont like manny
or dont think hes good for the sport
they fukin love him
hes great for the true fans
all they are sayin is
Hey doesnt appeal to the regular person, yet..
u guys are fukin krazee
its not hbos fault
this fight was promoted same as any other
it just didnt grab peoples attntion
not cuz hbo didnt want them to watch
but becuz both manny and marquez are new
new in a division ruled by barrera and morales
atleast back then
for a rare moment I agree with abdiel :D
