You hear a lot of strange things working the boxing beat. For example Mike Tyson has told reporters that he'd like to feast on Lennox Lewis's (then unborn) children and once spoke with enthusiasm about making Razor Ruddock - with his 'sweet lips' and 'fag voice' - his girlfriend. Then there was the time Hector Camacho told the wide-eyed press that he didn't mind a negative fan reaction because he gets his 'girls to boo me in bed' and it was almost a surreal experience to listen to Oliver McCall explain away the incident where he a fought off armed policemen with a Christmas tree in a hotel lobby. And yet, fight folks can still surprise you when they draw breath to speak. Here's a recent example: In Las Vegas last weekend International Boxing Federation Champion Chris Byrd told me a was avoiding WBA rival John Ruiz. This is the guy who just gave away 56lbs in a title fight and he actually said he was 'afraid' to fight the Hispanic hugger. "Everyone in the division is afraid to fight that guy," Byrd stated as though facing the most resoundingly average 'champion' in heavyweight history is tantamount to wrestling a handicap match against two half-starved grizzles while wearing a minced beef leotard. It's illegal, it is cheating but for some reason referee after referee let the guy get away with it. He should be deducted points and then disqualified for doing it but he's basically allowed to do it regardless. "When a guy is allowed to use different rules to win a fight than every other heavyweight on the planet why should I want to be part of that? I'd fight him and beat him but why should I climb in there with a guy who doesn't want to box when there's a division full of much more interesting fights for me, including a rematch with Vitali Klitschko? Why should I want to be part of Ruiz and his holding?" And, moreover, why should b-o-x-i-n-g fans have to watch it? ....I agree with Byrd on this one, but he doesn't do much fighting himself and IMO he isn't what a heavyweight is supposed to be either.

Why would anyone want to fight ruiz....I'd say he's the most feared fighter in boxing right now and its not from his boxing skills. easily the most annoying unwatchable fighter in the history of the sport

its 1 thing to do illegal tactics by accident...but ruiz goes in every fight looking to to illegal stuff...im glad tua dropped his ass in the first round..and roy jabbed his head off

The one-two-hug combo is the most effective combo I ever seen. If the one doesn't land the two will land and if neither of them land the hug will definately land.. hahaha LOL :D that's funny, but so true. Byrd has the right to bitch about Ruiz. How can you not when you already know the guy is gonna make up his own rules and win. Ruiz hug his opponents more than he fights them. That's not right. And that's why nobody respects him. And he always brag how he doesn't get any respect. But I do believe that Byrd is one the few guy that has what it take to beat Ruiz. Toney as well because there is no way he'd let Ruiz rape him. And of course V.Klit for his height and weight advantage. Toney-Ruiz? I tell ya that's gonna be classic. Just imagine what Toney would say before the fight. no way Toney would let Ruiz rape him, exactly, i can see johnny louise goin in for the hug and JT givin him the right hook to the body followed by a right uppercut. the key to beating huggybear is give him hard uppercuts when he comes in for the hug. i'd like to see a an in shape Rahman in against him, too

The worst part is, Ruiz commits these fouls does not get penalized for them and then constantly bitches like a little fucking pussy about the opposing boxers tactics. I am convinced that this guy has a vagina underneath that protective cup he wears. Nope...You are wrong! If he had a vagina, he would be wearing gum guards down there, not a cup! ;)

I thought it was good everytime Golota landed a face shot on Ruiz's ugly face. I also thought it was good when The Garden was rocking and people were beating the hell out of each other in the stands. I also thought it was good untill round 10 was over, when the judges and DK screwed Golota....again. Chris Byrd is so right, I don't think he should be afraid because of that, but there is no doubt that John Ruiz does what he wants inside the ring. That's what made the Ruiz-Golota fight so good, because they both went beyond the rules and it was fair because both fighters were getting cheap shots. John Ruiz is so horrible, I'm not going to even get into it, I think I expressed my hate of John Ruiz enough throughout the boards :) You thought the fight was good? It was painful on the eyes. It could have been good but Ruiz continued his pussiness after the second round and the fight turned into a disaster.

It's true that Ruiz uses semi-illegal tactics like hugging his oppenents until they are physically and mentally exhausted and then manages to sneak in some good combinations. But regardless of this, one of the so-called heavyweight champions should step up to the plate, rise to the occasion, and whatever other cliche you wanna use and knock him out. I'm sick of all the moaning and groaning about Ruiz, I mean the man is not invincible. I'm sure V.Klitshco wouldn't have any trouble knocking Ruiz out. Byrd needs to talk like a champion, say he'll knock him out and then do so! :mad:

I'm not sure if it's happened or not before with Ruiz.. but sometimes when refs don't notice illegal things (they always should, so this is no excuse), the figther being hugged / held might need to flail his arms around or tug viciously to overstate the fact that his opponent is holding.. not that they deserve to have to do it, but I think it will help any opponent of Ruiz in any future fight.

the reason refs let it keep happening is cuz their on don kings payroll, don wouldnt be happy if hes paying the ref and the ref is doing stuff against his fighters
