Hats off to the guy.He is a warrior. He took Lacy's best shots and kept coming. His speed was better ,as he got off more shots, but just not enough power to take the Title.Great fight
It's time for Omar to call it a career. Everyone is saying 'great job'?, he LOST again. He's almost a 'stepping stone' or resume padder for up and comers...........
The story always ends the same
sheika's 2 fights with scott pemberton on espn were classics, he's a good fighter but just short of championship class.
True...those were 2 great fights. I enjoyed the fight alot but got a bit irritated with Shieka for all that holding. I understand that they were both real tired from all that slugging, but Omar just seemed to get worse with the holding as the fight wore on.
Sorry, Frank, I hadn't read the whole thread, my mistake. I'm working off a 2002 issue of the Ring, wherein they name him the hardest-chinned supermiddleweight, and point to the Calzaghe fight as evidence. You're correct, though, I was not able to see the fight.
No problem. The cuts would have been enough to stop it but the ref actually jumped in whilst he was under a barrage of punches from JC after already being shaken by a few big ones earlier in the round and in the 4th. It's not how Omar tells it now though - he blames it on a butt.
I tried to explain what I meant a bit better further down the first page but Elveiel got it across even better.
Against Calzaghe he was stopped because he was out on his feet, not due to the cuts above both eyes. Did you see the fight or have you just been reading Sheika's interviews?

Its funny how the same rules dont apply for US boxers!! If Lacy was from the UK he'd be an overated, untested fighter who couldnt even stop Sheika!! :D
I know but what can you do except keep giving it back to them? :D
LOL. Maybe I should stick to making posts that wind up the Yanks and let you be the rational one :D
We could give that a try but i enjoy winding up the yanks to much!!

So its true what they say then, there is a first time for everything!! ;)

sheika's come a long way since being in tuesday night fight's "Just 4 Starters".... i never thought he would be as good as he showed this weekend.... that being said, i dont think he can beat lacy in a rematch...

This is kinda a dumb comment, Frank. Jeff has always been a slow starter. After he got up to full speed Sheika didn't win a round. Also, Sheika's been stopped twice on cuts, once on merit, that in his last loss against Pemberton. Clearly he's on the downside of his career, but I like comparisons to Ward.

Well done to Sheika. Hopefully this will serve as a bit of a reality-check for the Lacy diehards.

I didn't see the fight, but from what I heard, Lacy's punches you could see coming. That would explain why Sheika didn't get knocked out. It's the punches you don't see that hurt you.
Now lets not go overrating Sheka based on his performance with Lacy. He had many of the same problems that he had with Pemberton, he just managed to hold more and get to close to Lacy for Lacy to be really effective. Not that is not a knock on Sheika, he did what he had to do, but as the fight progressed, you could see that he was not on the same level as Lacy.
Sheika is not going to retire. He still has a lot of heart and he is still young. I think he is a good stepping stone for someone who thinks he can be an elite 168 lbs.
I would like to see him on showbox against another up and comer and I think he has the tools to give any 168 or maybe drop to 160 and give anybody trouble. He certainly will be more entertaining than say, Joppy.
I think Sheika's chin is just fine. His problem before was his defense which imo is getting much better. And as far as him "trying to return punches" the right hand he landed early on damn near put Lacy on his ass, it almost looked like he looked at the ref. as soon as he got cracked and said "oh shit", either way I thought it was a great fight and imo definately stole the show from Joel/Castillo. We should be seeing alot more of Sheika after his performance last night.
um
sheika has only been stopped twice and one of them was on cuts. that's not exactly a weak chin
I thought it was 3 times with 1 on cuts. Calzaghe battered him in 5 and the other guy was only a decent US domestic fighter. I agree his chin's not glass but it's not granite either. :)
Sheika's chin's not the greatest so it doesn't put Lacy in a particulary good light.
