Vargas is a guy who couldn't beat the best even with the help of steroids, now that he's not cheating i don't see how he'll be competitive. if it's money he wants he should try to get one big money mismatch, take his beating and retire
Yes, You are "Wright",lol
But 3 things,
1. Vargas back at 154, if he's anything like he used to be at this weight then he would be a contender for Wright's belts in no time and with Vargas' name this rematch would be in public demand.
2. Wright lost to Vargas. Wright as a champion now would probably be better off to put all grudges aside and take Vargas on to prove he is truely "the man" in that division and possibly avenge his loss to him.
3. What makes Wright money in this division? A bunch of no name fighters or a rematch with Vargas for all the marbles. De La Hoya didn't want to fight Vargas but that purse of money was tough even for the multi- million $ golden boy to refuse!
I agree with the last post, way too much way too soon.
Up untill his fight with Tito he was fighting great. He barely got passed Winky Wright but we all see now what kind of skill Wright posseses. Then he had a war against Ike Quartey who has given many other top fighters great fights as well (Oscar De La Hoya to name one)and he came out victorious.
He was able to destroy Campas which surprised me at how easy Vargas made that look.
The biggest mistake was Putting him against Tito. Although Vargas looked like he was going to be taken out in the 1st round of the fight, he showed the skill to adjust and weather a storm which was coming straight to him all night long. He gave Trinidad the fight of his life up to that point. No one except for Hopkins fought Tito that well straight up but still "too much too soon". Vargas, I believe had only 19 or 20 fights when facing Trinidad and Tito was just destroying anyone in his path.
I think Vargas should return at 154 to try and face Winky. That would be a good money rematch and at a better wieght than 160lbs. for him. Middlewieghts are probably too strong for his style of boxing (straight up brawling most of the time.
All in all, Vargas has given us some entertaining fights in the past agianst some great boxers. He has won some and lost some but regardless of the outcome he has never stopped going foward like many other Mexican fighters.
No running or hiding from anyone at such a young age and at such an early stage of his career with minimal championship experience. That says alot for this arrogant fighter. The key would be for his camp not to commit a 2nd mistake by letting him return at middlewieght. of course that's where the real money is but if he wants to be a champion and not just make a return for some quick cash then it should be at 154.
I have all the fights mentioned above and Vargas' fight wIth Winky was a good one. I think a rematch at that wieght for all of Winky's belts would be a great match and another good saga in boxing!
didn't wright say that he didn't want to give vargas a rematch cuz vargas didn't give him a rematch from their first encounter? now wright is the man, and he's gonna payback vargas for not giving the rematch before
He will be able to make a good living as a name on prospect's resumes for awhile. He never could get over the hump and beat the best.
I fully expect him to be a guy that comes back again and again basically everytime he needs the money.....eventually he will show signs of pugilistic dementia and have trouble getting the go-ahead to box in most states.
He is a cheat, a liar, and a punk but I don't wish what I see in his future on anybody. It will not be pretty.
154lbs. is exactly where Vargas needs to come back at, I actually see more money fights as well as great opposition for him to make another run at. Imagine a couple of "tune up" fights and then if he looks good enough and feels ready he should try and get Mosely, followed by Winky, and if he can some how pull out a win or even win both of those I would LOVE to see Fernando Vargas vs. Ricardo Mayorga at 154lbs. I definately could see that being a fight of the year type of war! All of this is a big if, and would only be possible if Fernando's mind and body are both healthy and sharpe, cause I'm sure that his heart is still that of a warrior!
Vargas is still young, i dont think he can cause the damage he did at 154 at 160. But thats where the money is at. I dont think he stands a chance with anyone right now. Last time i seen him he kinda reminded me of a mexican james toney. He should take at least 2 or 3 tune up fights before he even thinks about fighting a top contender.

Too much WAY too soon! he was lookin like a great prospect that was gonna be very marketable( kinda seems like he was supposed to be the next DLH only more mexican), Real flashy, confident yet arrogant people either loved him or they hated him. Then way too early they threw him in with Tito, even after seeing what kind of an effect Tito's fight with Reid had on Reid's mind as well as his body, They still put Vargas in there. That's the part I never understood, why spend all that time and effort building up a fighters confidence and skills just to put him up against a person that at the time was DESTROYING his opponents, and ruining fighters? The only thing that fight did for Vargas was show that the kid had the heart of a warrior, I say had because when I heard about him test positive for steroids after his fight w/ Oscar that told me that he had lost confidence in his body and skills. Which imo is probably a factor in his bad back problems, and could effect him the rest of his life. Like I said TOO MUCH TOO SOON!
He is a little too stationary for the chin he has. I think he jumped into the Trinidad fight too soon. I think we will see him win a few, but never amount to much in the middleweight division. Vargas vs. Sturm
Tito damaged him like he did to David Reid, and then DLH took the confidence he had left.
He's a loud mouth but he paid the high price...as for coming back he keeps postponing it!
Vargas has heart, but his pea brain is apparent. He is a punk and will never regain the form he had before the beatings he rec'd from DLH and Trinidad. He is coming back in March at 160. He'll win a few and them give me the thrill of watching his ass get knocked out again. I can't stand a guy who talks so much shit and can't back it it up.
Its a shame, he had a great fight with Trinidad even though he lost and the De La Hoya fight was good too. You would think since Ronald Wright is the champ and Vargas was the last man to defeat Wright tht he`s have a case to get that fight ( although i think he`d lose it ). Still, there are chances for Vargas to get back but he doesn`t, what a waste!
