I recognize that Bernard Hopkins is a great champion/boxer with enormous power for a middleweight, but is he hall of fame material? I think a prime Marvin Hagler would destroy him. Late KO or UD.
I have to agree with JPW. Hagler was a great fighter, but that was more because he had no real weaknesses, rather than due to some exceptional quality, and in that way he's not much different than Hopkins. Hagler was always in great shape, he was strong, he was smart, he was technically very sound, he had good but not exceptional power, his defence was solid, and his offence varied. Sound familiar?
About the only difference I can see is that Hopkins is the king of "dirty" fighting (which Hagler was never really comfortable with, in fact he had real problems with dirty fighters like Antuofermo), while Hagler's offence was extremely varied (he boxed straight-up, southpaw, and could give all the looks in between). I dunno, I call it a toss-up, but I also think it might not be a very exciting fight either...
interesting thoug I dont think comparing hearns to Hopkins is fair as Hopkins doesnt have the offensive arsenal of hearns but what he did have was that philly CHin.
Im not saiyng hop would beat hagler but I think it would be a lot closer than people are making out, Hagler wouldnt ko him nor vice versa. So then its a distance fight....and i dont know hagler would outsmart hopkins, i dunno comparing records isnt enough. Its a great fight between two top five all time middles in my book. ;)
Hopkins is clearly Hall of Fame material. But he would be destroyed by Hagler if Hagler comes out looking for a war. Hopkins' plan has always been thwart and counter. Not even Tommy Hearns stuck in there long enough to get Hagler's respect. I say Hagler wins by 4th or 5th round KO.
This aint even close in reality. The level of opposition that Hagler has fought compared to Hops is just so far apart it aint even funny. Hops has never faced the likes of Mugaby, Hearns, Leonard, Duran, etc... Hagler would just walk through anything that Hops could bring and end up with a brutal KO as usual. To me Hops aint fought even 5 great or good fighters in his whole career. I got a blown up 135lb Oscar, a young RJJ (whom he lost to), Tito (no comment) and that is it. If I forgot someone I cannot think of them. I will admit it is not all his fault because the fighters have just not been their but to compare his level of comp to Hagler's is just ludacris  . Hops is a distant #2 behind Hagler IMOP.

IN ANSER TO THE QUESTON IS HE WORTHY OF HOF.
yes the most worthy active boxer out there no argument, Toney Pacquio, Morales, the lot.
I would favor Hagler, although I think that Hopkin's ring smarts would give him a chance agaisnt any middleweight in history.
top post.
that my friend shows an apprecition of the attributes that hopkins has and also how he applies them to his fights.
Hopkins is the most adaptable and thinking middleweight Ive ever seen. May not have the biggest punch best skills but man, he adapts in the ring like no other. I think he developed this after Jones took him to school. After all no one can deny Nard is a man who learns from his mistakes
I'll also go for Hagler here, I know Hopkins is a great fighter and is shooting for his record 20 MW Title defense next year, but I have seen Marvelous beat up all my favorite fighters like Ray Leonard, Duran & Hearns, so I going for THE KILLER of my fave...
Bernard Hopkins is a great fighter and if you'd only be a HoF Middleweight if you could've beaten a prime Marvelous Marvin Hagler there'd be no other MW in the HoF.
A prime Marvin Hagler is the best middleweight ever to step in a boxing ring. At least thats my very personal opinion.
I agree with you about Hagler beating Hopkins.
And I don't think hopkins has some much power, but he does everything very well and his focus is always 100%
But that would have been a terrific fight!
