I just turned 26 and have been watching boxing for nearly two decades now. I used to go over to my uncles house who lived down the street at a very young age and watch/learn about the sweet science. My dad and uncle were huge fight fans and when they grew up they were best friends with a heavyweight contender named Boone Kirkman. Kirkman was semi successful fighting the likes of George Foreman, Jimmy Ellis...they worshiped Boone and still talk about him to this day, they always argue that Boone would have kicked ass in this era but after reviewing a lot of Boone tapes I have to diagree. So my dad and my uncle got me into this sport a long time ago and I fell in love with it, the very first fight I ever scored was Greg Haugen vs. Vinny Pazienza 1, I am from Seattle so Haugen was a big deal back when I was a little fuck.
Anyways I would love to hear how all of you got to be so passionate about this sport, there is nothing I would rather do than watch a good prize fight!
when i moved out to cali when i was 12. i moved in w/ some friends of my family, long story. anyway, they were a mexican family and Ramon Perez, the father of the family fought on a couple of undercards for a great mexican champ by the name of Jose Becerra - i saw some old clippings of him in his trunks and posing for the camera and the more i asked, the more he'd tell me and i eventually got hooked, big time. since i wasn't his kid, it was weird how close it brought us, to the point that his biological kids started to resent me a bit, well i ultimately became like a son to Ramon and a sibling to his kids. being puerto rican it made the whole pr/mexican rivalry all the more great, w/ a mutual respect that lacks on these boards.
well the more perez told me, the more he remembered, and reminisced and not before long he's getting his entire family together on saturday nights and were all watching the fights together. i'm back in DC now, and just turned 26 and the guys basically my dad so we speak frequently about life, boxing and somehow always make it relative.
man i miss perez.
well after i learned about his career and becerra, i was introduced to el leon de culiacan and after that, tito.
the greatest fight that we watched together, where we like all lost our heads ... was the barrera/hamed fight, i'll never forget that fight.
I always watched boxing with my dad, fights like bowe v holyfield. Then i saw gatti v ward 1, and i started to get more interested but for me the turnin point for my obsession was the destruction of gatti by mayweather...It was poetry!
I started out with Muay Thai, something I always wanted to do and finally got to do it... its still Muay Thai.
I started sparring a year after I began training, and watched Ramon Dekker's videos (the guy is one of the best kickboxers), and started watching videos of Tyson, Ali, Hagler, Mayweather and eventually Pacquiao (my favourite boxer who is still fighting).
in my personal training I just focus on boxing techniques first before moving to making use of the arsenal of Muay Thai (elbows knees and kicks). But I love to watch boxing fights... I should have got cable TV, so I can keep up to date with the fights.
I believe it was the Gatti ward fights for me.
That is my first boxing match I ever seen it was about 1 1/2 year ago.
Here is something funny and a bit embarssing. I got hooked into boxing by watching a japanese anime " Hajime Ippo" about a school kid who got bullied turned to pro. There was few episode that i seen and got love with the anime and the i couldnt find any anime so a started reading the manga til i they was any update in that site. I wanted more of this stuff so i started seening real boxing and downloading boxing video.
my friends dad would always throw a party when the big fights used to be on national TV in the early 80's. so i was influenced by watching the mega fights of that era. then my friends and i would box in the front yard for fun. it end up like a tournament with all the neighborhood kids. that lasted for a few weeks, but after that all settled we would box to settle our differences.
i was like a little chris byrd and no one wanted to fight me because they couldn't hit me. even the older kids were like, " he doesn't stand still, he's always moving he fights on the move." that pissed a lot of people off, but everyone was bigger than me so i had no choice but to give a little shake and bake.
and from then on i always watched boxing.
but not till i was 11 or 12 is when i started to follow boxing and learning all that i could about the sport.
i moved to vegas from long beach at 17yrs old and got to check out all sorts of gyms out here when i first moved and got to really know things inside the ring and out. i also got to see the business side at a young age and i found out then that most of the fighting and some of the harder fighting was done on the outside of the ring instead of inside.
now i'm totally obsessed. i'm just lucky that i can write about it and have two outlets for my opinions about boxing here at boxingscene.com and docsports.com/boxing............
history in the making, one day at a time.................
my father always watched boxing.. he never forced to me to like it like soccer.. i liked watching it on my own.. since i was around 7 or 8 i watched the big names in action.. i was bored one day in the summer(2005) and i watched some fights on showtime replay.. ever since then.. im hooked..
I got into a fight with my girlfriend when I was about 13 and I hit her with a hook so hard and this guy at school says, "Wow you look like Joe Frazier." I went to find out who that was and ever since I saw him fight I became a fan of his style.
You sir are an inspiration.
I was a kid, Maybe around 8 or 9, I forgot, and the first fight I saw was Spinks vs. Homes. Everyone was rooting for Homes and I was the only guy that rooted for Spinks to be different. Spinks was my favorite from then on, when everyone was talking Tyson, I said Spinks was better. I watched hagler vs. hearns and Hagler and Marvin became another favorite. I was sad when both of these fighters lost.
Im a bit confused here spoon...
You got into boxing because you had a love affair with cocaine?
You got into boxing because you were legally dead 6 seperate times?
You got into boxing because you fell in love with Johnny Tapia?
Keep adding reasons and you might hit the nail on the head.

I have to say the first fight I remember watching that made me really like Boxing was Hagler/Leonard in 87.I was like 10 and my dad took me to some place where we watched it on the big screen in like some sort of auditorium......watch Wrestlemania III there too but anyway I was pissed at the result..... being from Boston I was brought up to be a Hagler fan but the sheer emotion and everything that boxing brings had me.I did not keep up with it as much as I would have like but started seriously watching every fight I could get my hands on around 98 and 99 and have been since. :boxing:
