It's posts/threads that mention him in the same breath as Ali... and talk of Tyson's handspeed like it was comparable to Ali...
How about Lennox Lewis vs Ali... that's a more realistic matchup... Lennox would stand a far better chance to defeat Ali then Tyson ever could... I admit Tyson was exciting and he was a great heavyweight but he wasn't even the second best of his time... holyfield and lewis were way better... Tyson's reign only lasted 2 years... if a fighter's reign only lasted 2 years to begin with then you weren't that great b/c as soon as somebody exposed you... you were done... and that's not a mark of a true champion... Ali was a champion in like 3 different generations...
hmm
Tyson may not have had the greatest reign, but in his prime he can compete with ANYONE, even if just because of his KO power. That includes Ali, no matter how much the old-timers say otherwise.
Tyson in his prime wa just as mentally strong as anyone and had head-movement, was great at closing in and threw COMBOS, vicious combos.
Don't look at Tyson of today and say that he would never beat Ali or compete with him, that's just wrong.
Larry holmes is one of the most underrated heavyweights
I agree. Holmes had a superb jab and met and defeated all the top heavys of his time(I'm talking pre Tyson), I think people forget the fact he was champ for 7 years and was 48-0 before he ran into Spinks.
And of course Tyson is the only man ever to stop him :)
Muhammad Ali is so overrated it's ridiculous. Yes he was the greatest of his time and probably accomplished more than any hw in history but to make it like he is unbeatable against any hw of any era is just stupid. I think Lennox Lewis would soundly beat Ali and I'd give Tyson a pretty good shot too. Larry Holmes would've given Ali trouble ANY time they fought.
sad to say but i feel that too..homles was ali just a lil bit betta ..and frazier gave ali all sorts of trouble and tyson is the best type of that kind fighter that eva existed.. lewis was humongus and smart he aint great but his intelligence and size made him great when his footwork and speed did not
Tyson is certainly not the greatest of all time and absolutely postively not in the top 4 or 5 of all time. His legacy argument can be made after that though, he was the youngest man ever to win the heavyweight championship of the world, maybe I am niave and am forgetting that someone will always come along, but I don't believe we will ever see another heavyweight at Tyson's age win the title and put fear in the entire division the way he did, at least not in my lifetime and I'm 26.
yeah....The knee-bandaged, former lt. heavy champ.
The petrified one, who had one fight in two years before facing Tyson.
Whoo-hoo.
Spinks was also a former heavyweight champ who beat Larry Holmes twice. I think the knee was bandaged because Spinks didn't want any nasty canvas burns :D
Tyson in his prime was not overrated at all.
Now he is overrated because some people still view him as the boxer he was in the 80's and the media blows up everyone of his fights.
I think the Mike Tyson that ko'd Michael Spinks would have beat any heavyweight in history. Watch some Tyson fights from 86 - 89 people and you will see yourself just how good he was.

tyson wasnt over rated, he may be now, but in his prime he would have taken ali.... ali struggled against frazier, who isnt half the fighter tyson was... IMO.... end of the day tyson could knock anyone out, even butterbean lol
he actually fought someone WHO LOST TO BUTTERBEAN  Peter mcneely. what a shambles that was.
Mike Tyson is a frontrunner.
He's never come from behind to win a fight. He looks like he wants to cry when someone takes his punch & slaps him back.
He looked for a way to quit when a former crusierweight (Holyfield) actually took the frontrunner's punches & hit him back.
Great fighters RISE up through adversity. Mike has done nothing but SHRINK in the face of it...Every time out.
Exaclty. Frazier had twice the stamina and heart of Tyson. Mike crumbled when his gameplan wasn't working, Frazier kept going at it till his opponnent fell. Tyson was a plodder-he didn't use half the movement and bobbing and weaving of Frazier. Tyson was a stalker who could hit hard and land the occasional combination,it was very easy to tie him up, and if you forced Tyson to work with a high-workrate and punchout he'd get very frustrated-
Frazier was a machine who just did not stop 'smoking'. He actually wanted his opponents to throw the kitchen sink at him b/c he got stronger as the fight progressed. Tyson was always more dangerous in the first 2 rounds and then he became a rather ordinary boxer with a good punch arsenal and power.
Who do you think would've beaten Ali if not Lewis or Tyson?
Joe Louis ( the best boxer - puncher ever )
also Dempsey would give Ali an unholy beating
You saw fight Dempsey-Tunney and Louis-Conn?:)

Tyson would have killed the division at the time Frazier and Ali were at large....Speaking of Frazier remember when Tyson kicked his son's ass....HAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHA!
