Boxers who held on 2 long

I would say Holyfield, Whitaker, Tommy Hearns, Meldrick Taylor, and Alexis Arguello.

Muhammed Ali is the most obvious example from boxing history who hung around by his own choice. Fighters like Joe Louis and Mike Tyson are examples of fighters who should have stayed out but got forced back into the sport because of money problems which is even sadder. Although Joe Louis's reasonings were far more unfortunate than Mikes.

I don't think it's fair to say Bernard Hopkins hung around too long.

i would make a poll but i dont feel like it so just post who u think is the boxer who held on 2 long, i have to say Roberto Duran honorable mentions holyfield and Hopkins do you mean bernard hopkins? i wouldnt call beating everyone that challenges him including Tito and Oscar(even though DLH is incapable of being in top shape at middleweight) holding on, i call that domination. thats like telling Michael Jordan to retire after his forth championship.

Lot of names to mention but I think ALI is the Model for guys not to stay & fight too long, who knows if he did not fought Holmes & Trevor he could still be flying like a butterfly.....

They still have something to offer. Picking the guys who got out at the right time would be easier as there are so few.Guys like Michael Spinks, Hagler, Tunney, Marciano,Lennox Lewis (close call though), Ricardo Lopez. Roy Jones hung around too long but I dont blame him. He looked so good against Ruiz that he looked like he still had another couple of years left in him. Ray Leonard hung around way too long. Obviously should have retired after Hagler fight or at least after the Lalonde fight.Too many others to mention.

De La Hoya is already 3 to 4 fights past the 'overdue' date. His ego is going to cause irreparable damage. Marciano was a shrewd dude! One of a handful of guys still left with a brain! Mickey Ward made his due dollars and got out as well....As did Brian Mitchell.

Ali, he should have never got into the ring with Homles, or berbick. and Taylor. Holyfield is still pretty good, and could still take out a few in the top ten today. but will it be worth Holy taking out a couple contenders if he cant speak back to his grandkids and has to communicate like Steven Hawking?

Lots of fighters have hung around too long. Duran was one of the more glarring examples. He hung on for almost 12 years and 30 fights too long. :(

Most fighters hang on too long and there are too many to list. Some notable ones are Joe Louis, Roberto Duran, Evander Holyfield, and Jim Jeffries never should have come out of retirement to fight Jack Johson.

1 word. Holyfield. He used to be my favorite boxer when i was growing up. to see him get destroyed by James Toney, was like finding out santa claus isnt real when you are 2 years old. man i almost cried.

I forgot to mention Julio Cesar Chavez and now Miguel Angel Gonzalez. They both share a common executioner in Tzyu.

Duran was one of them.That fight against Joppy was a disaster. Joppy simply beat him up badly.The worst beating he got besides his fight with Hearns.I also get the feeling that Tyson is stayin' too long as well as Holyfield.
