When I turned on the television the other night to tune into the Toney/Booker fight, I was pretty confident that Toney would would hand this guy his first loss. Well, I saw exactly that, and more.....
James Toney beat this guy like a rag doll for 12 rounds.. The truth of the matter is that this fight should have been stopped long before the final 12th round. Booker was even glancing at his corner with a look of desperation as if saying "My God, will somebody throw in the towell"???.... Booker just decided to take a knee and save his own hide.. I guess he figured if the Referee, and his own corner wouldn't do it, he would.
Toney came out of his corner in each round like a caged animal let free. Toney looked in pretty darn good shape for Toney Standards as well.. He punished Booker with jabs, rights.. and a brilliant upper cut that found its mark with just about every attempt. When you looked into the corner of James Toney, it was like looking at a well oiled machine..
Freddie Roach calmly sitting in front of Toney between each round giving advice, and some suggestions..and Toney just sort of relaxing on the stool listening... With the Roach, Toney connection, I see World Champion written all of it! Booker was just plain and simply out classed by Toney... I will say this however.. Booker showed me that he has a heart of a lion.. He at least tried his best.. he didn't go down in defeat fighting like someone just trying to survive.. he at least tried to throw punches to the best of his ability. But Toney was just too much for him.
I look forward to Toney's next fights.. no matter who it may be, they better be ready.. James Toney to me, looks like a hungry animal on the prowl for prey...
Toney will get KO'ed within his next 3 heavyweight fights!

toney has mad skills and when healthy could beat any heavyweight out there....it's too bad rahman will knock out vitali before james can get to him.....yo how do you post a new thread
i totally agree
I like Toney and he may not get exploited too bad againt Ruiz but he will suffer if he gets in with a talented big heavyweight with any kind of punch ... I know, I know, there's no one around who exactly fits that description.
Just saying, if there were a Lennox Lewis around today ....
you speak as though Toney is not a skilled fighter himself. Toney is the best Skilled fighter in the HW div, Bryd is the only fighter who even comes close the the skill of toney. If he was to get in a fight with a talented HW then it would be a good fight in no way would he be domanated.

I think that Ruiz gets frustrated and dq's himself in 7 rounds. Warning for holdings in rounds 1,2,3 One point for holding round 4. One point for hitting low round 5. DQ round 7 for holding/hitting off the break.
I personally think Toney is too heavy for his frame, and his joints, and I think we will see more Toney injuries in the future. IMO, with regard to technical skill, he is at least second best in the heavyweight division, possibly behind Byrd, but against VK, he isn't strong enough to work inside, or to keep VK off him to win the decision, as we all know VK won't even be wobbled against Toney, and not tall or quick enough to get inside from long range, even if he could fight VK inside. He's a great fighter, no doubt, but a KO win over VK is reaching, and I think Byrd would take a decision over him, if Byrd moves like he used to.
james toney is too fat
to win the title. he aint
even in good shape. the
champion should be lean
and mean not have bitch
tits like toney. he is
just too fat. no way
can he ever be heavyweight champion.
...yeah, start a poll and ask if people thought the fight between he and Jirov was closer than the scores and if it could have gone either way up until that last round
From what I can remember, I thought it was very close going into the last round - Jirov certainly had a shot at winning it.
Lederman had the fight scored as a draw if I remember correctly.
mcline talks better than he fights. when he gets in the ring he has sparring partner mentality. he fights like he's been paid to give the other guy a workout.
toney is a great boxer, but unfortunately i think that at 36 he's past his prime, especially if he stays in the heavyweight division. since he's a little guy he needs speed to get inside the bigger guys' reach and do some damage, and speed is one of the first things that boxers seem to loose as they get older. if toney was 29 right now i'd say that he definitely had a shot at being heavyweight champ, but as it is i think that he should drop back down to light heavyweight and try to cap off his impressive carrear by winning the title there and then retiring.
you think jirov was in the fight till the last round? i must be watching a different fight. toney schooled his ass for the entire fight, alot of jirov's punches were blocked or missed. i'm a toney fan but i'm no schoolboy nuthugger and i knew as soon as the fight was signed jirov was beaten.

i've been watching toney since 1991 and he is by far the best boxer in the hw division, in the booker fight (which was his first fight after injury) he got injured in the first round, but still went the distance and won every round. what did vitali do against byrd? time will tell but if he loses against vitali or any other hw this year you can all take the piss out of me for backing toney. everybody is so hung up on klitchko that when someone gets him in the ring and makes him look the bum he is, this forum will go deathly quiet, it'll be like pac losing! ha ha.
...Look no further than Toney/Jirov to see where Toney stands. Jirov got pounded and was easily outboxed by Mesi until Mesi ran out of steam. Moorer hurt him with big punches throughout the fight and when he put a couple together he showed that Jirov is no true heavyweight and can't take a heavyweight punch. Jirov gave Toney a fit for the entire fight and most feel the scoring was BS and it was anyones fight until the last round that Toney took control of and dropped Jirov at the end. For Toney to struggle with Jirov is a sure sign he is in deep shit if he ever fights a legit heavy in his prime. And yeah, obviously that excludes Evander in his current state.
