Chris Van Heerden To Be Trained By Freddie Roach

Welterweight Chris Van Heerden will now be trained by Freddie Roach, Van Heerden told Boxingscene.com on Wednesday afternoon. Originally from South Africa, Van Heerden (21-1-1, 11 KOs) has continued his success in the ring this year, only he now lives and trains in Southern California. In his last bout on April 16, Van Heerden won a hard-fought 10 round split decision victory over Ray Narh in Santa Monica, Calif. With the victory, he has now won his last seven bouts in a row.

Van Heerden Injured, Withdraws From ShoBox Bout

Former IBO Welterweight Champion Chris Van Heerden was forced to withdraw from his first US televised appearance on Showtime due to a foot injury. "I can't tell you how absolutley devastated I am right now. I was just wrapping up a great camp with Canelo Alvarez and sustained a freak injury to my right foot. I was hopeful that maybe I could box, until my Dr. confirmed otherwise," said Van Heerden. Chris was looking forward to being introduced to American boxing fans on SHOBOX milestone 200th show, adding "I want to apologize to my South African fans that booked travel to US, my American fans, King Sports, GH3 Promotions, and especially Gordon Hall at Showtime who was giving me my television opportunity in the US, unfortunately dealing with injuries is part of boxing."

While there are a number of fighters who continue to dominate small landscapes in their countries, Van Heerden decided he needed to make a move to taken more seriously by the boxing world. Van Heerden is proud of being born and raised in South Africa. It took him round or two, but once he got going, he was not about to stop. Welterweight Chris Van Heerden stopped veteran Cosme Rivera after the fourth round of a scheduled eight round bout at the Florentine Gardens in Hollywood, CA on Thursday night. The bout was also the United States debut for Van Heerden, who had fought all but one of his bouts in his native South Africa. Van Heerden had not fought since March of last year, when he won a one-sided 12 round unanimous decision over Matthew Hatton.
