Errol Spence-Chris Van Heerden Made Official, PBC

TORONTO -- Groupe Yvon Michel (GYM), in association with Global Legacy Boxing (GLB) and Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE), officially announced today that 2012 U.S. Olympian Errol "The Truth" Spence will take on South African welterweight Chris "The Heat" Van Heerden in the 10-round televised co-feature, airing September 11 live on Spike TV in the United States, as well as Indigo and Bell TV in Canada, from Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto.

BoxingScene.com had been advised that rising welterweight star Errol Spence Jr. (17-0, 14KOs) will likely face IBF #8 ranked contender Chris Van Heerdan (23-1, 12KOs). This fight will be the Premier Boxing Champions on Spike TV co-feature on September 11th at the Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto, Ontario. The main event will feature Adonis Stevenson will defend his WBC light heavyweight championship against heavy underdog Tommy Karpency.

It is easy to understand Chris Van Heerden's frustration over the last couple of month or so. He was scheduled to fight Frankie Gavin on May 9, but Gavin pulled out of the fight in order to accept a fight with Kell Brook on May 30. While boxers pulling out of fights happens in the sport, Van Heerden moved on, taking a fight on a few weeks' notice and securing a dominant win. Van Herden stopped Ramon Ayala after the fourth round inside the Ray Dolby Theatre at the famed Hollywood and Highland.

Van Heerden (22-1-1, 11 KOs) was scheduled to fight Frankie Gavin on May 9, but Gavin pulled out of the fight in order to challenge Kell Brook for the WBA title on May 30.

Among the many drawbacks to a promoter being able to control both sides of a marquee fight is the disrespect felt by the fighters who are frozen out due to such politics. It was in that vain that Chris van Heerden woke up frustrated on Friday morning when learning his planned May 9 showdown with Frankie Gavin was no longer on the table. van Heerden had agreed to all terms, only to learn that Gavin will now face unbeaten welterweight Kell Brook on May 30 in London. “Waking up seeing Gavin fighting Brook just shocking!” van Heerden commented through his social media account. “I've signed contract to fight Gavin May 9th why do we sign contract?” The fight was on the table as early as mid-February, even formally announced by Matcrhoom Boxing's press office. Speculation of the fight being canceled surfaced in recent weeks, especially as Gavin's name was linked to two more fights—a potential title eliminator with Tim Bradley, and a title shot with Brook. Friday's announcement in London confirmed the latter to be the end result, the easiest fight to make as Gavin and Brook are both promoted by Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Boxing. While upset, van Heerden doesn't hold it against Gavin and instead sets his sights on new business. “I'm happy for Frankie Gavin. Like I said before it's any fighters dream to fight for (a world title),” insists van Heerden, who is coming off of a split decision win over previously unbeaten Cecil McCalla this past January at Madison Square Garden in New York City. “I know something bigger (better offers) will come my way in all of this, I'm positive.”

Birmingham’s Frankie Gavin posted a 10-threes win over Bogdan Mitic at Sheffield’s Motorpoint Arena on Saturday night in a marking time bout that he believes has sharpened his tools ahead of a May 9th meeting with Chris van Heerden at Birmingham's Barclaycard Arena. Gavin moved to 22-1 (13), but he failed to put his man away and has blamed the lack of action on the visitor’s unwillingness to engage.

It was the former IBO welterweight champion's third successive victory since embarking on his campaign in the United States. It was also a seventh successive win overall as he attempts to break into the top echelon of what many rate with the likes of Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, Timothy Bradley and Juan Manuel Marquez as the most accomplished weight division in boxing right now.

By Thomas Gerbasi - Welterweight prospect Dusty Hernandez-Harrison didn't deliver the showcase performance his fans and team might have expected against 35-year-old New York veteran Tommy Rainone at the Madison Square Garden Theater on Friday night, but he added another win to his unbeaten record by way of a less than thrilling 10-round unanimous decision in front of 4,253 fans. The bout marked the first event of Jay Z'’s Roc Nation Sports, a night highlighted by the appearance of the aforementioned hip hop icon and mogul and other notable stars, as well as a performance before the main event by Fabolous. The only thing missing when it came to star power was the main event, with Harrison workmanlike but little more against Rainone, who was game but didn't have the firepower to put a dent in the confidence of the 20-year-old. Scores were 100-90 twice and 99-91 for Harrison, now 25-0 with 13 KOs; Rainone falls to 22-6-1 with 4 KOs. Harrison picked up the WBC Continental Americas title with the win. After a three-minute feeling out process to start the bout, Harrison began walking Rainone down in a more determined fashion in round two, ripping off a couple left hooks that got the New Yorker's attention as he did so. The third round followed suit in the same fashion, the most exciting portion of the round coming in the final moments when the two got tangled and then tumbled to the mat.
