Mexican legend Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. is very upset with the way that his countryman, former world champion Francisco 'Bandido' Vargas (23-1-2, 17 KOs), is being handled in terms of his career.
From November of 2015 to January of 2017 - Vargas has been involved in back to back to back wars - and he took a lot of damage and punishment in all three fights.
In November 2015, he went through hell to stop Takashi Miura in nine rounds to capture the WBC super featherweight title in the 2015 Fight of The Year. Because of the the punishment and the cuts that he suffered, he needed several months to recover - but once he returned he entered straight back into another Fight of The Year war with Orlando Salido. That contest ended with a twelve round draw.
After the Salido fight, Vargas needed to take off for the remainder of the year to allow his cuts, and his body, to fully heal from that hard battle. Last month he came back, once again in a very dangerous fight, against rising Mexican puncher Miguel Berchelt - who coming in had knocked out 27 of his 31 opponents. Vargas once again sustained serious cuts around his eyes and was punished by heavy punches until the fight was finally stopped in the eleventh.
Chaves Sr. is so upset that Vargas was placed in those types of fights in consecutive fashion that he feels whoever is responsible should be jailed.
"They should be put in jail, forgiveness is very loud, but [Vargas] is very poorly managed, and the matchmaker or who would do those three fights [should be jailed]. Obviously [those types of fights] are perfect for TV, but for a human being to have those three fights ... Francisco Vargas, he's a good friend of mine.. this really hurts me that [this happened to him]," Chavez Sr. said on Golpe a Golpe.
"I definitely think the cut [from the Salido fight] was badly healed. I found it incredible that the same cut just reopened [after all that time off], it was poorly stitched. I think this fighter has been addressed very poorly with his surgical procedures."
